I am plus size woman out here making patterns, so you don't have to (unless you want to). This week I made the cursed B4790 Walkaway Dress reproduction and it did NOT go well.

I have a special magnet that we picked up from Harbor Freight, it's about 3 inches in diameter, on a long metal handle, great for finding things in the gravel to keep your tires from going flat, and on the carpet to keep your feet from bleeding!

I use a magnet stolen out of an old speaker. It’s really strong. I leave it on my fridge. When I moved last, my housemate tried to leave it behind, not knowing it had a purpose. I have subsequently shown him the error of his ways when he spilled a whole box of finishing nails on the floor. 😂
I use a magnetic pin holder and sweep it over the floor after projects.

Honestly I didn't know it was going to look that bad but knew it would be nothing in comparison to the original pattern. I do not know why they feel they do not have to make the curves in the modern ones but THEY SHOULD. It makes a difference on how it hangs on the body. That pattern proves it. (Not like we already didn't know!!!)
Oh I sure do! So I am not too worried. But yeah, I wish they would go back with the original pattern and correct the big issues.
Knowing the sheer amount of loathing that you had for this pattern, I had to tune in for the snark and sarcasm that would invariably be hurled towards this monstrosity. And I cried with laughter the entire time - well done!!

NEW EMPLOYEE: "But we don't have any, we never kept any of the patterns, just printed and sold them."

CEO (semi-frustrated): Well what do we do then?
MARKETING EXEC (flips paper in portfolio): People like aprons. Do we have a dress that looks like an apron?"
NEW EMPLOYEE (showing off recent fashion school diploma): I'm sure we did. But instead of looking through the archive of patterns sent to us, why not just repattern the back of the most popular apron?
MARKETING EXEC (smiling): Perfect, we'll call it a Retro Pattern, it will sell like hotcakes and people will make it on social media!
ARCHIVIST: Wait, I think I remember someone sending in a pattern that looked like an apron.
CEO: Who cares? That will take too long, time is money. You NEW PERSON--go draft up the back to an apron. Archive, find the pattern and give it to the graphic designer, have them make the new pattern look like the retro pattern but I want to see RETRO in big letters.

Either glue a magnet to the end of a stick, or go to the hardware store and get a construction magnet. It is a magnet on a stick for picking up nails. Run that over your carpet to find pins.

I always assumed I just didn’t know how to follow pattern directions, now I know it’s not always my fault.
Nope! Not your fault at all.
I have the repro pattern. Haven't made it. Haven't made the vintage one either. That said, the gaping under the arms is my biggest beef about both versions that I've seen made online. I would have to wear something under it to avoid my bra showing. So I always thought I would need to address that in a mockup. And then I never have liked the shoulders. It's not wide enough to be a cap sleeve, but it's too wide to be a normal sleeveless dress pattern. So that's the second thing I'd want to fix in a mockup. And I think the darts would have to move - I have a full bust and smaller underbust, and I always need to fix stuff for that reason. I do love seeing all the variations lately thanks to your challenge. I'm going on a cruise in January and maybe I'll see if I can get something worth wearing (with correct undergarments) because I do love the shape on the envelope.
I appreciate this video because I also wanted to see how it compared. I got this pattern for less than $1 because I bought a bundle pack of patterns (haven't got to it yet because I'm working on another) but this convinced me I need to get my hands on the vintage pattern as well.

I got the reproduction to work on my plus size frame, but that's because on anything like this I will always make a muslin of the bodice area first. The concept of following the ink on anything these days is preposterous, but that's just me. Amusing video as always, thanks. 😊

You're making me feel a lot better about how ill-fitting my dress turned out, back when I was a baby sewist. Also, do you not regularly drop pins on your carpeted floor? Mine is practically made of pins!
Bwahaha! I do regularly drop them, but then I must pick them up (because Florida equals barefoot)

I made a toile of the repro a few years ago. That is as far as it got. Not worth wasting fabric on, unless I made it into a work tunic for the art room. But that would have to be a second hand duvet or similar.

I don't think it's a waste of fabric! I personally lean through visuals, so I really appreciate the comparison between the patterns on a real body, not just the flat pattern pieces. I might try reproducing the pattern myself from my blocks, since I don't fit right in modern or 50's patterns 😅

I absolutely LOVE the vintage version on you and the dress color and pattern are just striking! I hope you love it too and make whatever adjustments you need to in order to love it and wear it. The reproduction...I agree. Burn the pattern and salvage the material for other projects. Funny thing is, no matter what you make from the reproduction dress fabric, you'll always look at it and be reminded. 🙃😁🤣🤣🤣😏
My grandma always carried around a really strong magnet on a stick, it was something she bought but idk where, and if a pin fell she'd swish the stick around on the ground till it stuck. 😂 Magnets also just make superior pin cushions! It's just so easy to pick them all up off the table, or to have them just *stick* as you're removing them and trying to sew at the same time. 😅

The original fits you much better. The colors on the reproduction dress, suit you. It is a beautiful shade for your coloring. If you could make the fit adjustments to the reproduction dress, you may be pleasantly surprised how flattering it is on you. Yes, the armholes need big adjustments, the bust darts need your special finesse, and the neckline is too high for your beautiful shape.

This video makes me feel the shame wash from my soul, the embarrassment sluce from my visible bra bits, the fear rinse from my uneven hem....I mean, I thought I could see, I made this pattern, I spent 6 months or more afraid to cut fabric. I feel better, now.

I swear my sister is the only one that looks amazing in the reproduction dress. She's a size 4 (pattern size 2). and 5'2" And A cup. It's down right adorable on her and hits her perfectly in every single way.

I made the reproduction several years ago, before I found you on TH-cam. I was so disappointed in the fit. I tried to add darts to make it fit better. Now I know just how bad this pattern is. I ended up cutting it up to make other things . Thanks Stephanie for your fun insights. I look forward to your videos.

For pins lost to the floor, get one of those magnet wands; they are great for finding lost pins!
I so loved 😂it when you pointed at pattern where it didn’t line up …’this is cute’! I think my comment was more like… ‘WTH??!?!’
Oh yes… and a table or empty place flat and large enough to lay out is non-existent in my home… so I ended up using my queen sized bed! Worked great. Was up off ground, didn’t have to stretch or bend or get on the floor… and at my age getting up is the issue. Plus, having the flat cotton or satin on the bedding made easygoing of cutting with box clips for my pins Just pay attention to the layers!😮 yes. I cut my comforter about 6 inches! Oh yes.
The proverbial Grainline! A actually refolded and realigned and found in satin… it’s important for the lay and flow fluff to be with grain. Cotton, not so much.
Oh boy…. I had to also do many rogue adjustments…. Yeah… not sure I will ever make it again.
I only wonder if doing it’s design for intended Barbie figured size and a minor design modification to fit issues would it work??!?!? Don’t know. Not willing to waste time or fabric to find out! Thanks for the laughs! Sew…Press On! Cheers.
I have just made the retro Butterick 6211 after an original from 1953. I have the variant from sizes 14 to 22. If you look at the drawing, the sleeves should just reach over your shoulder, but according to me there are only a few women , even if they make the largest size that has a shoulder width of 60cm. I have relatively broad, straight shoulders, but I don't get any further than 45cm. Not only did I have to make up that difference, but I ended up having to adjust the pattern so that I went from size 18 to 14 and back to 18 to get it to fit. Oh yes, and I had to make the darts even bigger on the side, and take about 2cm from the shoulders, otherwise it would still be way too big. Long live the mannequin to your size. I don't know what Butterick did with this pattern, I don't know the original, but I'm curious. With the adjustments my dress looks like the pictures and fits well. The original pattern, which looks a lot like the walk away dress, is not very original anymore. Oh, yes indeed. The length was perfect for me, with my 1.62 meters.
Like others in the comments, I bought the reproduction version of this pattern years ago, lured in by the gamine cuteness of the cover art, which made it look like something out of Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn. (Also, hey, blame the $1 pattern sales at Joann's and my poor impulse control.) Luckily for me, I saw finished examples of the dress posted to the Pattern Review website before I committed to making it, and... Oof. It looked nothing like the cover art and would have been an absolute waste of fabric and time for something that had the style and silhouette of a garbage bag with neck and armholes, but made out of some of the most questionable quilting fabric choices ever. This is one pattern where we all loved the idea and the click bait art more than the reality of the style.
Its just like they looked at the pattern art and vaguely made a pattern. I had a copy of it kicking around when I made the vintage one, and even the method of closures isnt the same. You are suppose to overlap and use buttonholes. I swear they never even looked at the original

For those of us with physiques that aren't as angular and structured as we used to be, the Walkaway dress is usually not a good choice. An unstructured garment looks best on a well defined form. Those of us with softer, curving shapes to our bodies, look better in more structured garments.
I really liked the print solid mix you picked out but you definitely did a much nicer job of sizing it up!

Sewing is my profession. I also have been a sewing educator. This video makes me crazy. I don't know the vintage or reproduction patterns you used, so cannot comment on the quality of either, but your frustration with the sewing part can be corrected in a couple of ways. First, put the bed back on your sewing machine when doing regular sewing. The free arm in used only when sewing in a tight spot. The bed make sewing easier. Second, when sewing bulky pieces together (ie. bodice to skirt) have the bulk on the left side of the needle - it is easer to control the sewing. Third, 90% of the time, commercial sewing pattern need adjustment. That is a given and time and materials for a trial (old sheets are great for this) should be considered when starting a new project. Commercial patterns are made with an average set of measurements for a younger, perkier body shape. Gravity, age, child birth and general body tone, as well as type of undergarments you wear, all have an effect on our bodies that the pattern companies cannot account for. You must do this yourself. Mock ups of the pattern help, as well as experiences with each pattern company. It can be frustrating to sew because of this, but as with all things, keep practicing. It gets easier the more times you do it.
I think you need to do another challenge. I think you need to do a caftan challenge of the one size fits most that you made earlier this year. You are a real trooper for getting this one done

Go to a store that sells car supplies and get a magnet on a collapsible rod. They are made for picking up small metal things, so you can find a dropped pin without using your feet.

I've sewn for decades and have recently started buying vintage patterns and sheets and don't want to waste a beautiful sheet😀
Honestly I have no tips for finding the grain line because if I am using a sheet it isn’t a garment I care about “grain” too much

I have this pattern. Because of the reviews I haven’t made it yet. I bought a couple of vintage Swirl dresses. Then I’ve found some vintage patterns that are similar to the Swirl dresses. I think I like that concept better. There’s something about bringing the back up to close that just doesn’t make for things to be right. The only issue with Swirl dresses is there isn’t enough closure in the back and you can give a show without wearing a slip underneath.
Oh true!! But some of the Swirl dresses are spectacular
@@StephanieCanada I’m just a bit bigger than most average vintage clothing. But I’ve been a bit lucky on Etsy and found a couple in the medium/ large range. I’ve got one that is a pink and green avocado print. The other is just pink but has the embroidered pockets. I like them a lot except always wear a slip underneath. 😂. That big gust of wind from behind can make quite the sight to others.

Rewatching this a year later and reminding myself to throw away that stupid pattern I bought on sale. Thanks for sacrificing your time, fabric, and part of your soul so that we don't have to. Also, with all those extra darts, I'd have expected a better fit at the bust. Any updates on the availability of a true vintage reprint for this?
Oh how I laughed along with you -- really there were tears. I did try this pattern years ago. The unfinished disaster went into a donation box. I hope they have forgiven me and re-used the fabric. I had no idea then -- not sure I'm any better now.

I remember the Great British Sewing Bee episode that featured this pattern. It was specifically to test their ability to custom fit. I can’t help but wonder if the reproduction pattern was deliberately made weird to make entertaining television and then when the “people “ clamoured for a commercial version, instead of fixing it, it was just released as is. 🤔

For someone starting out, it would have to be very discouraging to sew up one of those repro patterns and not have the thing fit very well. I'm not sure what is the answer except for generous utubers willing to post vids like this to give a heads up. But, with adjustments to the bodice, the blue dress would be very pretty.

When I tried to make this the neckline kept falling off my shoulders. So between that and the gaping armholes I gave it up as a bad job and stuffed it in a box somewhere.
