@@asiabryant207I think it only applies if you have it cut out already. Sewing time only, if you count full making time... That's a different story.

I'm a newbie quilter and my personal flavor of insanity is "my mom's 1980s sewing machine can't do a quarter inch seam so I'm just going to hand sew everything" so that gives me a lot of time to chill and watch other creatives' shenanigans. I also so subscribe to the equipment

Oh my god, I am so happy to find another person who does this. I have an allegedly perfectly functional sewing machine that's a hand me down from my mother who got it from her sister who bought it in the late 70s-early 80s. The times I have used it, it did eventually function but took a lot of time and frustration to get the stitches to...ya know, stitch stuff. So I've spent the last few years aggressively avoiding the sewing machine and making bags and stuffed animals and quilt-as-you-go blocks by hand, even though I know it is taking wayyyyyy longer than it could. 😂

    • @werelemur1138

I don't have a sewing room and I live with three other people. It's easier to just hand sew than get the dining room table cleaned off so I can set the sewing machine up for a few hours.

You know, they make 1/4” feet for a reason. And, you can always use your regular foot and just move the presser foot to the left a notch or two. Stop making excuses and go sew something!! (Speaking in my mom voice)😂

    • @kymberlypease3020
      @kymberlypease3020 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I use a piece of washi tape (although any tape works) to mark a quarter inch away from my needle. Helps create a very accurate seam.

    • @ivoryhenson1285
      @ivoryhenson1285 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Unless you're quilting or bra making, why not just make a bigger seam allowance and then cut it down? Also, you and the other commenter might need to take your machines in to the shop for a tune up, it can do a world of good

I love that you use the basic sewing items! You sew on a budget that most of us can understand. I've been sewing for around 40 years (Thanks, Mom) and I still only have a sewing machine. No serger. When the choice came to buy a new sewing machine or a cheap serger, I went with a new sewing machine so I could have one set for knits/embroidery and the old one as my basics. That you sew with the basic equipment makes what you do so much more relatable and obtainable. Do I have a cutter matt? Yes. I lucked into it on clearance 25 years ago. I'm glad I did. Tip for that now is to check Office Supply stores for the best prices. It is the same type mat for paper or sewing.

I've been avoiding polyester and nylon for a bit for clothing, but that's because on bottoms it makes my skin react and in tops, it makes me smell like BO in about 3 seconds. I WISH I could not care. There's SO MANY CUTE POLYESTER FABRICS.

Quilters are equipment magpies, and we cut a lot more and mostly straight lines, so the rulers and mats help the accuracy.

You know what I love so much about watching your videos? I love that you make these things for YOU! I just mean that you don’t have the need to follow a pattern exactly or that you don’t care if there’s a few extra seams or whatever. I love so much that you made the pieces fit on the one piece of fabric even if that required you to sew a few parts together. In the end it all is going to make the same thing just one will have a few extra seams but saved fabric because of it!! Thank you! I do this myself and I see so many others not. ❤

It has been fascinating watching your sewing process because I am so much the opposite. I have hundreds of patterns and trying to draft something myself generally makes me run in the opposite direction. Hello, fellow chronically ill person! May I recommend to you the 5009 Women's Day magazine wrap-on play clothes pattern from 1951 that you can find as part of a like 5 piece reproduction pattern set as a remarkably excellent starting point for the trousers for said project? Fix the pockets, though, the stock pockets are not deep enough, but I've been remixing the trousers pattern all over the place and it's just a lot of fun.

And that's here in a small town in SW FL. I can only imagine what you'd find in LA! Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the new house!

Happy stress is indeed a real thing. It's called eustress, and some experts think all stress is 'just stress'. But since there's 'distress', I agree with the experts that say eustress is a thing.
    So.
I find hand-hemming peaceful. Give me a full length circle skirt and I'll just make up a 'hand-hemming' sewing bag and set it and the skirt on a small table beside my favourite comfortable chair. I'll get something peaceful to listen to, thread a needle, and get started.
Therefore, for me, hand-hemming is eustress for me.
Someone else reads 'hand-hemming a full length circle skirt' and something inside them just screamed at the idea at all. For them, hand-hemming is probably distressful.
And you've just shown me a good way to make a bib/apron combo for people with limited ability. Basically making the front piece but not the back.

You're funny. "Going to make this but I'm doing it my way" The actual pattern front piece only leaves a couple of inches open at the back and it eliminates the underarm problem you had. I do like the full skirt on your front piece. I put two buttons in the back for adjustability. I made it in an '80's floral duvet, it was supposed to be a practice it took so much longer than the 4 hours it was supposed to that I haven't done it again, yet, lol but I do wear it a lot

I'd been thinking about a knit version of the walk-away dress, so I'm inspired! I noticed that you have what looks like an inch difference between the edge of the skirt and the band. If you don't mind a little hand sewing, you can make the back (tied in the front) more adjustable by snipping off an inch on either side, re-inserting the ties, and then hand stitching closed (thus allowing you to tie it tighter or leave looser as desired).
Good luck with the house closing!

I’ve never been a fan of sewing knits, but I have a few pieces that I want to make into dresses eventually, I just need to decide what I’m making. And although I love following patterns, I almost never make a garment exactly following the pattern, I always change something.

I love the chat about the mindsets varying when you're coming into a project due to past experiences. There are SO many different things that people have done in regards to crafting things, embroidery as you stated for example (especially by hand) takes FOREVER. If you're using rotaries and such for quilts, or even sewing machines for hemming and such it goes a LOT faster than if you're doing your cuts or sewing your stitches by hand. I love that you stated that there's a lot of differences in how to make things and that it's fine to test and see what works for you as a creator.

Just watching you sew puts sewing further forward in my brain, and this week I finally got around to making two new pair of jeans. If I’m not thinking about sewing, I don’t sew. You just being you is a beautiful thing. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm!

Wonderful result! I love almost anything that is cinched in the waist or a little bit higher. I love it when you chat about random stuff, also can't wait to see videos about you moving to the new house.
Speaking of which, there are a lot of fun zero-waste patterns to try, I hope you consider it.

The first quilt I ever made was from tracing squares and cutting out with scissors. I had never heard of a rotary cutter. That particular quilt technically took me 12 years to finish because I started it when I was a kid for my Aunt who was pregnant and then I didn't finish it in what I felt was an acceptable time to give to her (as the baby was already walking and I was still cutting squares with scissors) so then I found it years later when my other Aunt was pregnant with her third child, but I was an adult and got through it much faster and finished it and gave it to her.
But it was a cool story to tell my 12 year old cousin that I had started it for him, but finished it for baby Sarah (who is now in college, so this was long ago and I am now 43 and have my own kids). Anyway in my 20s I told this to my future mother in law who took me to a sewing afternoon thing because my now husband had told her I liked to make quilts and I was in the process of cutting one BY HAND for a friend and she asked me why I wasn't using a rotary cutter and I had no idea what that was. She showed one to me at a crafting thing she took me to and then bought me a set for Christmas later that year. A pizza cutter for fabric was the coolest thing to me and it really did help in that quilt because it was just squares of various blue fabric for a king size quilt, so it was so nice to cut strips and then cut that into squares. But this was 20 years ago, how would I know what I don't know? My kids growing up with TH-cam tutorials at their fingertips is so neat. That very first quilt that I started when I was probably 8 was from a McCalls that we just happened to see in a doctors office and it was old enough that they didn't care when I asked if I could rip the directions out of the magazine for the quilt, they told me just take the whole magazine.

My Dear, Someone gave me a sewing machine and I hope to sew again - even if I only doing mending. Your channel is such an inspiration to me. Thanks for what you do.

I love watching your videos. I was first intrigued by "adjustable" and "pockets." I stayed with your videos because I love your dresses/creativity and your vibrant personality. Your conversation is basically talking to yourself, which is what I do myself, so it's nice to see someone else who does it, too. One of the things I most enjoy is the "fashion show" montage you have at the end (of all the ones I have watched, anyway). I have been sewing on a machine for 40+ years: quilting, garments, and a variety of other things. I have added pockets to my side seams for a very long time, though not as big as yours. There was a skirt pattern I had that I quite liked the side seam pocket for, and so I just always used that one pattern to add my pockets. Well, sometimes I added pockets to the front skirt or bodice (like on a man's shirt). Sorry for rambling. This is my very first TH-cam comment ever.

Lovely dress, great idea too to make a wrap dress. Instead of 1 narrow tie in the front you could make 2, I think that would be cute. Congrats!

I'm seven, so you would think that I would just go for it. Maybe some day soon. Lori

I also love stripes above all patterns to the point that I also hamstring myself when it comes to actually making clothing from it. This color/pattern combo, though, came out so lovely.

WOW, another great dress. Don't fret about equipment. I sew everything by hand because I don't have a sewing machine. To be true, I have a 1955 treadle Singer machine, but it needs some repairs, so it's unusable. Electric machines are too fast for me!

I am an experienced seamstress, I do not use patterns because I DRAPE my designs on a dress form, paid a lot of money for that course and so worth it… but I truly just enjoy your videos… I love your humor and your creativity and the fact that you add pockets to everything, I love it… 😊

17:21 a very inexpensive alternative to the cutting mat is to take a piece of plywood, line the top with rolled cork (you can find it reasonable at hobby lobby, may find it cheaper at like a lowes or Home Depot), then take your ruler and a fine-point permanent marker and add your grid lines… got it out of an old sewing book, it also says you can use an old door (find it at yard-sales or at a thrift store like the habitat for humanity stores where they sell different stuff like doors, cabinets, floor/backsplash tiles, and household appliances for cheap) just a thought lol

Congratulations on your new subscribers! I just found you a few months ago and have been playing catch-up with your past videos. I can't wait until you get into your new house and I hope you'll have a (as my hubby calls it) "woman cave" with all your projects set up in their stations - and we better get a tour! Then you can go into new avenues of interest, like collecting vintage machines (*ahem*). I might have done that... I love this as a knit version MUCH better than the woven versions. It's basically just an apron.

I love your style. I have 20 years of experience sewing with patterns and a 20-year time gap. Now, there are so few traditional patterns. Woven permanent press is scarce. A better selection of knits that fit our lifestyles better that I am beginning to think that I can at least figure out how to make my own patterns.
I also got a serger 2 Mos ago and have sewn 3 nursing shirts, 4 children's Ts, 4 sleepers, and another simple woven shirt. All but the last woven piece was a knit and the serger made the most beautiful seams I have ever sewn. I can't believe I waited so long to get one. I'd still be waiting but my daughter found a brother 1634dx for $100. Someone sewed 1 seam and gave up on it. This really needs to be your first tool purchase.

I started sewing again a few years ago after I'd been doing a lot of cross stitch. It took me a REALLY long time to figure out that I could sew things by hand with no big issues. Sure, it's slow, but cross stitch is far slower. I do get into trouble with the speed of sewing with a machine. It's so easy to turn pieces wrong way round. Still working on the concept of French seams. The mind boggles.

17:14 fyi dollar tree now sells rotary cutters in two sizes for $1.25… and their quite decent actually lol and also, the cheapest place to get the mats ive found to be at walmart and this includes when crafting stores mark them down
