Remember waaay back in Bake ep 1 when Hanekawa and Araragi were talking about their class project for the cultural festival?Hanekawa suggested everyone casts votes on some alternatives for their project, and Araragi responded with "It's fine. Seems somewhat democratic." in a harsh tone which Hanekawa also commented on. Now I'm not saying Nisio planned all this out based on some throwaway line but, it lines up so well. Also Araragi being good at math was mentioned waaaaay back in Bake
funny you say that Sodachi sounds like Senjogahara because Sodachi's VA first auditioned for the role of Senjogahara, didn't get it and then they gave her Sodachi
It's because back then, Sodachi's VA, Inoue Marina, usually have a lot of Cool, Mature, Kuudere type character, while Hitagi's VA, Chiwa Saito, have many Cute, Moe, characters (Like Tamamo from Fate). It's from Hitagi's role (and Homura to boot) that Chiwa Saitou have many serious and Cool characters as her default voice now.
"I don't know anything" and "You know everything". Something that's been explored before in Monogatari is the idea of "looking away" from something and pretending not to notice it. Pretending not to see it or know it or remember it. This here is the extreme of that. Araragi knew it all from the very beginning - he just didn't want to think about it. And that look Ougi gives him after he admonishes the teacher... Owari hype! You've now entered what I think is my favorite stretch in all of monogatari (it's a hard call but I have a lot of reasons to love this and the ensuing couple of arcs). There's so much setup and so much payoff - with every bit of it as fascinating as the last. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
The nickname "How Much" is derived from the fact that the surname "oikura" is pronounced the same way as a polite word for "how much", as in "how much does this cost?" No wonder she'd rather be known by the name of a famous mathematician! As for the line about inequality that caught your attention, in the original that was a pun where the 不等 ("futou", mathematically unequal) in 不等式 ("futoushiki", inequality, as in a mathematical expression) is replaced with 不当 (also "futou", but meaning "unfair" or "unjust").
it was mention earlier in the series (don't remember the excact line but noticed it rewatch the show with ya) Araragi did say math was the only subject he was good at the only subject he didn't need to worry about (but ofcourse they never said how good till now even with the subject of his studies being brought up from time to time)
Fun fact, the voice actress for Oikura actually auditioned for the role as Senjougahara but failed. So she could have actually been the voice for Senjougahara. Her classmates call Oikura "How Much" because asking how much something is in Japanese is also "Oikura". Just a simple pun and as mentioned is fitting because of her calculative nature. Now we are finally exploring Araragi's backstory during Ougi Formula. There were actually a lots of hints about his backstory all over the series. Recall all the way back to Bake episode 1, Hanekawa said that Araragi was strangely antagonistic against the idea of democratically deciding their class's activity for the school festival. Also, she mentioned that he was very similar to the Fire Sisters in the past but something happened during his first year and he changed to a loner during Kizu. Previously, Tsukimonogatari was mentioned to be the start of the end. While Ougi was there during the previous arcs, she didn't really do much except talk about some "pointless non sequitur". Now, we finally get to see her front and center. Notice how the show portrays her, with a lot of shadows and reflections. She is also frequently depicted as physically embracing and towering over Araragi, almost seemingly intending to swallow him whole. Also, this is probably the only series where an entire arc can take place in a classroom with just dialogue and be entertaining. Can't wait for some of the best voice acting I have ever heard in the future arcs.
He might have also recognized her as Kyoko from Sangatsu. Kyoko and Sodachi are some of her most enthralling performances. She'll always be Chiri to me though.
Yo just so you know this arc is when Ougi and Ragi meet so it's chronologically after Neko Shiro but before the rest of second season. It took me a lot of rewtaches to notice so I thought id mention it
It's only before Nadeko Medusa and Hitagi End (and Suruga Devil of course but that's obvious). Kabukimonogatari and Onimonogatari are within the same time frame as Neko Shiro - barring the introductory/concluding bits where he reminisces with Ougi.
I'd always suspected you were a melee player based on the gc controller in the background. Feels good to have it more or less confirmed. I'm a much bigger fan of PM myself, but unfortunately it's hard to find footage of high level play since nintendo's wrath came down. Anyway, I'd been waiting for you to get to Owari for a long time. This is the arc I've rewatched the most by far. It has great thematic depth and it's amazing how visually interesting it is considering it's literally two people having a conversation in a locked room for 45 minutes. Owari is the premium monogatari if you ask me, even better than Second Season, and I'm anxious to hear what you have to say about future arcs. Btw someone probably already told you in discord already, but "owari" means "end." So you could say owarimonogatari means Final Story.
Monogatari: Shows example of how easy it is for a group to latch together and form a witch hunt Teeaboo: That's how Mafia works Sorry, couldn't resist...
39:37 "...we never really knew how he was at math so..." We do, it was his best subject, reference to this is in this certain scene (Bakemonogatari Episode 12 (in the car)) 51:39 "...ah she already wrap up..." hm... from this sentence I assume you misread the date Kanbaru introduce Ougi, it was six months after the 'bite' mean that six months and it clearly said by Araragi at 10:19 "during the last third of October"
I find it amusing (and also a bit sad) how the tsundere trope is so engrained in anime by now you just assumed Oikura liked Araragi, even though she does really just despise him
Yeah, there's been literally no context in this episode, and thereby no reason, for Oikura to like Araragi. She quite outright stated that she 'Hate Araragi' while looking him dead in the eyes. I don't quite know where he got the idea that she's somehow 'secretly pining for Araragi'. At most, she reluctantly respects him for being proficient in math, and sets aside her literal hatred for Araragi to ensure the best possible outcome could come out of the meeting by appointing him the moderator.
扇 (ougi) - “folding fan”. She was introduced to Araragi by Kanbaru as her “fan”. Doesn’t sound like much? Well, “ougi” has multiple homonyms, such as 横議 - “arguing persistently” (she does), literally written as “unreasonable consultation” (she provides), 横行 - “being prevalent” (appears in multiple books), written as “unreasonable conduct” (she has) and 奥義 - “esoteric mystery” (she is), written as “inner righteousness” (her true nature). I took this bit from a Reddit post (from r/araragi) about the plot significance behind Monogatari character names. It is a great post that gives a lot more depth to the characters and blew my mind the first time I read it. (It has spoilers tho).
Now I want to see your reaction of Marina Inoue perform an express her feeling in VA of Sodachi... that anger and despair... Whoa... she gave me chills...
That's a weird translation. What's written is "ten years", and I do think it's what I hear too, but they translated it as "eons". Or maybe in this context, it's supposed to mean "decades"? I think that might make sense and be a good compromise between the two translations. It's funny to watch you talk about Mafia now that I'm watching this more than a year after the video was posted, with Among Us being the #1 reference for that type of game right now lol
and we are finally introduced to best girl Oikura Sodachi. next week will be amazing it's my favorite storyline. it's a 2 parter though so I wonder if he'll split it up or not
you can look at episode titles for this season i think its fine but if you wanna know how long the arcs are without knowing the titles for the rest of the series then i can help you out with that ↓ ↓ ↓ >alright so for this season the next one is 2 episodes and then 3 and the last one is 6 episodes >Koyomimonogatari is very episodic there is no "arc" not sure how you will do it one episode a week? i'm sure you will figure it out when you get there > for Owari season 2 its 7 episodes and arcs are 2-2-3 >and finally Zoku owari is six episodes the whole thing was released as a movie in japan so you can do 3-3 episodes or just watch the whole thing
getting close to catching up... listening to tee go on a rant about mafia makes me want to have him read raging loop, would a VN count as a reaction or a playtrough?
the TV is probably the TV of doom, hachikuji's backpack of doom turned into a TV....... or maybe,as always,as with the backpack,it's just a TV,it was on focus because reflexion,no other reason,as the backpack was not the backpack of doom, just a backpack. here's a good solution when you think you're over-thinking something, ask yourself "is it a show that will do this kind of thing?". let me give you an exemple. let's say that you're watching K-on. a scene with Yui play some guitar. so if your first though is "what if the guitar turn into a giant robot ninja squid and try to destroy the world, and then Yui transform into a magical girl to fight the squid but she can't because she need the power of music,so she need to be better at music",..... then ask yourself "is K-on about this kind of stupid thing?",the answer is no so you can tell to yourself "ok i was over-thinking it was ridiculous". so when you first think about hachikouji's backpack of doom, then ask yourself "is monogatari about this kind of convoluted ,super complicated and ridiculous things? or is it about simple and clever things". answer is : simple and clever things, so backpack of doom is dismissed. that can solve your over-thinking problem even if the backpack of doom was pretty hillarious to me
Yeah sadly Coalgirls subs changed the dialogue to much in their translation of Owarimonogatari which is why Horriblesubs is still the most accurate translation for Owarimonogatari (i was kind of hoping he would change the subs for this one because of the very questionable changes they have done with the translation for this season but maybe he will read this and change the subs). While Horrible subs might not have the edited and animated subtitles for the flashes/signs or opening subtitles they atleast dont needlessly change things that are clearly being said. The way ougi talks also gets kind of lost if not literary translated. Otherwise Coalgirls are the best subs for the previous seasons (excluding bake or obviously kizu). Tho if he doesnt mind those things he might aswell keep these subs because Horriblesubs are missing the Blueray exclusive Openings which are nice and one still enjoys the storry itself.
god im super fucking psyched owari for me is the best in the series (shinobu mail's a bit forgettable)but overall Ougi has the most fascinating interactions and sodachi is so bittersweet

>episode ends with more weirdness and questions about Ougi than ever before
"You can't just get a bunch of people together and decide that 2+2 does not equal 4."

Ight imma read that again

It's crazy if you think about how probably the only one who beats Araragi in math is Hanekawa. He's so crazy good at it
Fun fact, the voice actress for Oikura actually auditioned for the role as Senjougahara but failed. So she could have actually been the voice for Senjougahara. If you liked the concept of this arc, watch 12 Angry Men
The VA for Sodachi is Marina Inoue, who also voiced Chiri in Zetsubou. That probably explains why you thought her voice sounded so familiar.
He might have also recognized her as Kyoko from Sangatsu. Kyoko and Sodachi are some of her most enthralling performances. She'll always be Chiri to me though.
You missed that Ougi drew on the board a heart with something like Ougi + Koyomi=Love. Which is hilarious
“Makes perfect Nishio Isence“
That line killed me...

Ahh you've finally started probally my favourite arc. Simply because if the amount of ougi and the amount of substance. I can't wait to watch more.

You will at some point get to love the spooky sleeves
Monogatari: Shows example of how easy it is for a group to latch together and form a witch hunt
Teeaboo: That's how Mafia works
Sorry, couldn't resist...
these are some of my favorite episodes the direction and camera work and soundtrack is simply amazing breath taking
If you like Nishio Ishin's mystery, check out Kubikiri Cycle. It's an 8-episode OVA from one of mystery series. Also done by Shaft.
I suggest you pay close attention to Oikura's voice actor performance for the following arcs as it is one of the best I have ever seen.
I agree.
YESSSS
You will soon notice that Sodachi's voice actress is the same as Kitsu Chiri in Sayonara zetsubou sensei.
Oh man, the next 2 arcs are easily my favorite in the whole series, can't wait to hear your thoughts on them.
