    Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this excellent video (whilst probably not feeling your best) and for saving all the supporting documents/photos that went into it. This is a very thoughtful, detailed, and important document (a gift, really) for historians of cycling-especially mountain biking. I’ve been following your channel avidly for many moons now, and while this video is all storytelling and no shop-action, I think it’s perhaps the most engaging of the lot! Well done and please, keep up the great work. Thanks too to Mitch! I got into DH mountain biking about a dozen years ago. On the weekends we would make the hour or so trip to a lift serviced mountain in Northern New Jersey called Mt Creek. Every so often someone would roll up with Brodie - what a unicorn! The bikes were probably over a decade old at that time but people would gather round and admire the outstanding quality and tech of these handmade machines. Paul, you are really a legend - thanks for the stories!

    What a great and informative session Paul. I'm glad you did this, for the record. It's fantastic we have this type of venue to tell the stories. I only wish our grandparents could have done this way back when, telling stories of the families and their histories. So much is lost, when they were trying to tell us as youngsters, and we weren't ready to listen, and by the time we were, they were gone, and so were those stories. Thank you for this.

    Me mum raised my sis and I on her own, from the late 1950's (you know, that period women were not allowed to have a bank account without a man's signature). Anyway, she got her Cosmologist Degree and became a Hair Dresser. Being the Entrepreneurial type she opened a 2 operator salon (one owner operated stall and one rented to another Hair Dresser). Within a few years (1964 when women were finally allowed to have a bank account) she bought a 9 Operator Salon, and eventually built a 26 Operator Salon in the 70's. After her retirement, she asked me which I think she made more money with? Yup, the 2 Operator Salon with little to no overhead! We all need to stay 'Small Business' whenever possible : )

    Thanks for the ride thru time Paul. In 1985/86 era I had grown up around auto racing and never seen a mountain bike and came across one at a local store. It was on the end of a rack back in a corner like an outcast. Only one in the store and looked like nothing else there. Royce Union was the manufacturer, and it came home with me. Now going on fourth years later I still have it in my garage. It is still ridable and when I need to visit my youth, I pump up the tires and go for a ride

    I was fixing bikes for some friends who were going to ship them to Kenya ,Africa.When covid hit the price of shipping went through the roof.They decided it was too much so I was asked"If I would like them?"I said yes,kept the bikes for 2 years while adding to the collection.I was introduced to Rene,he wanted the bikes to ship to Cameroon,Africa.I went through the bikes and picked out the vintage bikes.One bike that I loved was a Brodie ,Kinetic.All it needed was new cables and housing,plus a chain.When I started cross country racing my first ride was a Ritchey which I still have.In 1999 I was sponsored by Schwinn/Toyota and Burlington Bicycle Company.My mechanic and friend Dave Walker who was also a downhill racer for Schwinn/Toyota said to me"At some point give back to the sport."It took 23 years but I used my money I got from the sixties scoop to buy parts I needed for this project.So glad that the bikes will be there for Christmas.Now people are giving me bikes again,this time I want to give to children on the reserves.I am very happy that I have an American classic and now a Canadian classic.Love and Light Mr. Brodie

    Very nice, thank you. I was 18 in 1970, remember the CB750 very well. It was a dream I could not afford at the time. Those were the days. I did see the Dick Mann Daytone 200 race winning bike at our yearly motorcycle show, that bike travelled the world. 'Your' Honda has the same paint scheme as the Dick Mann bike, if memory serves me right...

    Brilliant. Thank you for that. Was also road racing in early 1970’s. Saw an early MTB in California,late 1980. Returned to Oxford UK where I was working with friends bike shop. We decided to see if MTB’s were available in the UK. Fast became one of the UK’s few MTB specialist shops. Sold Specialized,Marin,Kona,Ritchey,Trek through the 1980’s. We owned the first Cannondales in the UK. Took part in MTB events,racing,fun,innovations,bike builds,wheel building etc etc through the 1980’s. Amazing days. Did some bike testing for MBUK magazine late 80’s until the MTB scene got too controlled and serious. Since then mix Road and MTB,won a few races and now enjoying gravel riding around my home in Co Donegal..NW Ireland. Still have workshop at home and do bike fit,wheel building,custom builds etc. Really enjoy your work. Thank you.

    I still remember a early Brodie Test of Metal Race in Squamish in early 90s. We drove up from Vancouver to see the race that became the most memorable ever. Mountain biking was not as big as it is now but every one at the race watching or competing thought it was. The organizers had a bus that drove spectators up to view the race and take it all in at no cost. The riders were from beginner to top end pros that went to go on to be well know riding bikes on trails that you most people would not try and ride today. Such a memorable day.

      @wills.7626 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul. I’m positive it was a Thunderclap. Name was changed to TBolt the following year. It was the first year RMB was offering that frame, and it was so amazing when you looked at it compared to the Tantalus which was def a Richie progeny. The reason the name Thunderclap stuck in my mind was that as you said, that name got changed to Thunderbolt very soon afterwards. Game changer for that frame was when Suntour started offering their XC line of components which included a long (for the time) seatpost. I think it was 300mm? Sadly, with that increased leverage I ended up cracking the the TT/ST braze on the front side. That was in 1992. Ended up with a Bontrager OR. The TClap hung in my shop and I can’t remember what happened to it, which as I said, I kick myself daily over.

    I love how much innovation there is, and quite a bit copying too.
    It's incredible how incompatible 'love handles' are with raiser bars, I've had colleagues who gave in to insistant customers. It was needed on straight bars but impossible now.

    Oh, my, the nostalgia! I got my first bike shop job in 1971, the first place in town with "real European 10 speeds!" I never made a career of it like you, Paul, but my brother and I did end up building some road framesets, and I even won a state TT championship on one of them in '96. Your stories remind me of all sorts of good times, so a huge thanks!

    Kudos Paul. And hang in there. My mother passed away on the last day of 2020 from Covid. At the time my dad had colorectal cancer and was going thru chemo. He was done in late March 2021 and came back nicely. He was 85. When he was up and running he was playing golf again and went on Facebook and got himself a girlfriend at 86. And she's only 71. I told him he was robbing the cradle! Point being is you will do well and come back better than ever. You have a lot of discoveries ahead of you very soon.

    Paul, fascinating story with great illustrations. I didn't think I would like podcasts but your foray into the arena held my attention non-stop. I suspect the cchemo has something to do with the less demanding format (more sitting, less working), if so a seamless transition. Keep your chin up, my hair changer from black to grey also but who's counting years?

    True Bicyclist seem to have great relationships with single cylinder motorcycles. We cherish corner speed and the Bravery of not slowing down, but when we do it takes strong brakes.
    Outstanding history lesson here.
    I worked at a Bicycle shop in 1979+80. The shop owner would get such a high building a "one of" special that all the workers seemed to glow as well.
    Really put me back there watching this. M.B. Action mag.
