"Glaube mir" [Believe Me] is a sad German song from 1954 (music composed in 1952), about a person left by the love of her/his life. A huge international hit, originally created as "Mütterlein". It was translated in English by Carl Sigman ("Answer Me"), in Spanish by Artur Kaps ("Háblame"), in Danish by Knud Pheiffer ("Lille mor"), in Czech by Vít Ilek ("Náhodou"), in Dutch by Simon van Ranst ("Sta me bij")...

Glaube Mir is used a couple of times in the movie "The Innocent". Susan Bickley is credited as the end title singer. Can't find any information whether she also sang for the scene where Leonard and Maria meet in the club. Glad you like the song. It is unspeakably bitter/sweet for anyone of German extraction - perfectly captures the time - a nation trying to rebuild after a cataclysmic defeat, uncertain, divided and humiliated, the enormity of the national guilt for the war atrocities, memories of millions of dead, the longing for a return to happier days.

What a beautiful song. I also like Rudi Shüricke's rendition.

Also thank you for providing the lyrics. Now I can sing the whole song rather than just Glaube mir, glaube mir.

I found this song on an Anthony Hopkins movie called The Innocent. It made the movie. Seldom do I watch a movie twice in a row, but I played it all night just to hear this song. Thank you for the upload.

I heartily agree with you! I too watched The Innocent repeatedly to hear this lovely song, especially at the beginning of the final credits. I drove my cat crazy with my lah dee dahing to the melody for hours.

Just watched the movie, "The Innocent".The last song, "Glaube Mir" did indeed provide a perfect finale during the credits. I don't understand German, however, this song brought me to tears. My Question: Did Maria Mucke sing on the movie soundtrack? I heard it once. The soundtrack voice didn't sound the same as the version on this TH-cam posting. If I had to guess, I would say the vocalist was an opera singer. Can anyone tell me WHO sang the vocals of the movie soundtrack?
