  • In 2023, Supercars driver Shane van Gisbergen made his first NASCAR start in the Cup Series race at the Chicago Street Race… and won. Now he races full time in NASCAR and has had to learn a whole new way of life and racing. My story on SVG.
A major thank you to those at NASCAR who allowed me to be credentialed for this past weekend’s race at Darlington and a massive thank you to Bruce Schlicker for taking time with me after the race to talk about Shane.
All video of Shane at the NASCAR press conference is owned by NASCAR Media. All other photos and videos in this video, including the thumbnail, were taken by me.

Nice work with the edits, NPC! The access and coverage over the past few races has been excellent.

Great video mate. I think Shane is only barely starting to warm up. Once he gets comfortable, everybody will see just how good he is and what he can actually do in a race car. I just hope that they give him a good car so he can show what he can do because he’s been let down by the team a couple of times this year already.I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do and also Waters and Wil at Sonoma next week.

    Top Job on this.
Really like what you are doing.
I suppose a lot of us over this side of the Pacific are still learning and understanding things just like Shane is.
I used to watch casually when Ambose raced, but never really understood all the intracasies of Nascar.
Your uploads kind of help de mystify it all.
Theres So much more to those ovals than just turning left. 👍

Awesome synopsis of Shane's road to Nascar and some background. Thanks mate! keep it coming. I like many other Kiwis (and Aussies) keep an eye out for your coverage each race weekend.

Shane is a freakish driver and I mean that in good way. Hes for sure going to win races. The guy knows how to dominate and overcome.
I am following every race and I am enjoying coming to some understanding of what NASCAR actually is. ROCK ON SVG. Champion

Enjoyed the video. Thanks. I feel it could have benefited with a recap of his race results so far. Discussion of his near win at COTA and of running out of fuel. It would also be helpful to have a explanation of how the points system and playoffs work, how many points he has obtained and how he’s likely to track chasing a playoff position.
Finally, a bit picky but the audio levels and clarify are a bit all over the place. A small investment into some microphones would make a huge difference (lapel mic for yourself and shotgun mic on camera perhaps).
Thanks for your videos and updates.

Next year he’ll be up there it’s getting use to the way air flows at those speeds and drafting

Once Shane is comfortable, probably in his second season in the main game, he will start driving in ways nascar has never seen. He will analyse how the best do it and figure out things that can be done better, like he did in Supercars here in Australia over around five years. He and Scott McLaughlin used to transfer the cars’ weight from one side to the other in high speed chicanes, similar to a change of lead leg in dressage to have the correct lead leg into a turn for a jump (horses). This would mean less lift off the curb and more time with driving wheels on the ground out of the corner, getting the speed back up quicker. He will find something like this eventually in NASCAR. Let’s not forget, Shane is on Mac Verstapen’s sim racing team!,,

He avoids any media about himself but if he knew this channel was where all his fans were at I reckon he'd do an interview

Funny to see how your SVG videos get big views and your other videos get way less.
