Not really, but if you drive 90 mph everywhere you go. An electric car is not for you!
For real, a lot of highways are 65-70mph actual speed limit not 50...
The crv is gasoline only power above 70mph if I remember right. So it’s genuinely as good as it could possibly be on 70+. The EPA doesn’t need to change anything because 70+ is an unreasonable speed for mpg

On my FWD Sport during a road trip to Las Vegas from Los Angeles I averaged 37.5mpg going out and 38.5 coming back. So there is definitely a gain to fuel economy on the lower trip. Also, I believe the Sport has 18" wheels while the Sport Touring rides on 19"
It's also the fact that its FWD which helps with fuel economy. I have a FWD Sport as well.
What speed did you mostly cruise at?
@@BluLemon I had adaptive cruise set to 72 most of the way. And climate set to 72 as well. Basically the same parameters Charlies uses for his mileage tests.

2024 crv hybrid L sport fwd northern california 39.3 mpg. only use heat or defog if needed. normally only use seat warmers or open the moon roof if it is too warm.
What app are you using for the speedometer?
I own one if these and very happy with my purchase. Like you said in the beginning, i do get better milegae in Normal mode for some reason.

Great test. I don't own one yet but am strongly considering buying one. My commute is about 50 highway miles each way, so this test would be repeated over and over. It's clear the CRV Hybrid SUV doesn't crush the competition in MPG numbers, and the additional cost for the Hybrid would not be recouped over the non-hybrid if only my commute MPG was considered. Hears the thing though, i usually found myself upgrading to the larger engine variant for most vehicles I have purchased. The larger engine variant is always at least $2k more and will loose several MPG, but it just feels better to drive. If the driving dynamics during your first and last mile of the commute and the weekend jaunts make you enjoy the vehicle more, it is likely worth the 'upgrade' cost.
I get 26 in my hybrid.
I think Honda assumed the target customer for this car is going most of their driving in city and suburban streets.
In addition Honda’s hybrids are deigned with the engine acting as a generator to the two electric motors. At higher speeds the engine connects directly to the wheels leaving the battery and electric motors completely out of the equation, hence the lower highway mpg.
I dont know about that, compact and midsize crossovers are becoming the most common sold vehicles(at least in the us) when i look for an suv i always look for these things; maximum cargo space, fuel economy and cost to own in general, and least complex powertrain/drivedrain. Everything else is nuanced in my opinion. By least complex i mean does the engine have a turbo vs non turbo(im picking non turbo), is the transmission a traditional auto, cvt, ecvt, dct, manual, im picking a traditional auto or ecvt. All of those factors puts me looking at a forester(very simple powertrain and cost to own, takes a minor hit on mpg though), a crv hybrid(simple 2.0 NA hybrid powertrain, okay mpg for extra cost, great cargo space and phenominal cost to own), rav 4 hybrid( best mpg for its size, very similar cargo room, simple but takes a hit in cost to own, toyota is price gouging people for their hybrids and they do not hold their value like subaru and hondas do post 5 years old unless its a corolla)

After 3000 miles I'm getting 36mpg on the awd hybrid. You could get better depending on how you drive.
City driving will help the mpg. Steady state highway cruising isn’t where the Honda hybrids shine
My 2016 HR-V struggles to get more than 30 on the interstate at the same type of driving, so it's impressive to see these CR-Vs exceed its mileage despite 64 more horsepower and being heavier. Can't wait for my CR-V Sport to come in.
I’d be curious for you to do the same loop but use the factory navigation. Since it’s predictive and see if your highway number goes up.

Even I did a mini test on my 2010 Subaru Forester with half a tank from work to see how far I can go at 70 mph mine had the roof rack from Thule and on Continental crosscontact LX25 Tires with that many tests I did a total of 250 miles and that in a time span of four hours and MPG for all of that with 18.9 Mi to the gallon
2022 outback with no overhead, crossclimate 2, no traffic highway @ 70-75mph gets around 27mph, epa estimate is 32 😢

The Sport Touring hybrid has 19-inch wheels and AWD standard, so I wouldn't expect it to perform the best for fuel economy. I'd be interested to see the same test with the Sport-L hybrid 2WD version.
True! But it still points out that it’s a shame that Honda makes you get those wheels with the sport touring.
FWD Sport getting 37.5mpg or so mostly highway, brand new 850 miles. 70-72mph but also some stop and go cuz CA

Have you considered the MPG figure is prob at least 1 to 2 gallons higher than what it is? My testing by hand has verified that, anywhere from 1 to 1.8 on mine. Always higher than by hand though. I use one click method, same station, same pump. Diff pumps matter also.
I drive a last generation CRV for my work and I drive on the freeway a lot and I average 36 MPG
So the hybrid might get better fuel mileage if you drive a lot of street. But it's weird that the regular CRV last generation gets better fuel economy on the freeway
I was looking for highway test of non hybrid crv. That’s interesting. Looks like Honda hybrid doesn’t have any gains on highway. RAV4 hybrid actually still gets few mpg better vs non hybrid. Crv hybrid was around 3% optimistic, while Toyota hybrid 6% My 2012 crv was always exact. But with speed 80 mph dashboard shows 1 mpg less vs real
Hybrids only have an advantage when you're hitting the brakes. If you're cruising along the highway with no braking, then the only thing a hybrid system adds is extra weight.
@@magnetomarketwrong, hybrid can charge the battery and use ev mode only for a few period of time, then turn off to charge. It’s serial hybrid.
I bought my CRV Hybrid in June and my combined average since I bought the vehicle is 40.6mpg, and the combined on my current tank is 42.4mpg

@@slothypunk 39.8. The weather has been cold and I have noticed that when I first start it up, it runs engine only for a while as the vehicle heats up. Once it’s warm it goes into both hybrid and EV modes. So the temperature would explain the drop in mpg

Did you have the air conditioner on during test?
Change out the crappy OEM tires and the car is very quiet. Firm but very nice ride. Cloth seats are very supportive. Overall a outstanding car.
Interesting thing I’ve been watching lots of videos. And I was wondering if people changed out their tires to continentals. Because my ‘23 Sport touring came with Michelins which are super quiet.
My 2007 had Bridgestone dualers. Worst tire ever made

@@briq4409My touring came with Michelins, too, which I was happy to see. I love the car, and the mileage keeps climbing. If it is chilly out, you can save gas by manually turning the heat on when the engine locks on, and then turning it back off after a little bit.
Would be nice to get a comparison CHART with all your road tests. Also, does your gas have the increasingly popular 10%ethanol? I'm losing 10%autonomy on my car because of the corn!

Normally when I hit highways I travel along with family and friends like at least 4 people in it with luggage. Will it change mpg? Mine I am getting around 25 for a 1000 mile trip
Yes, I think a super course rule of thumb is 1 mpg down for every 100 lbs in the car, at least with city driving. Maybe .5 mpg on the highway.
Hybrids are meant to be driven in town. You should have a test route in town for hybrids 👍🏻
I was debating on a hybrid because I'm sure 90-95% of my commute is city driving. The only thing is I don't drive much maybe 5000-7000 a year. While my commute is short usually most of it is waiting at stop lights or in traffic.

Does the RAV 4 do better at the pump?
RAV4 should be better mpg wise by a few mpg.
You stated B mode for max regeneration. Can you or somebody explain that?
It always uses breaking for regeneration of the battery. You can do that in drive mode also but you have to set it every time you break.
B mode is just drive mode with automatic regeneration breaking.
B mode for braking by engine, while still regenerate, on bid downhills when battery is full. If your battery not fully charged you waisting kinetic energy
How are you getting over 400 miles in range ?? I have the same car I only get 370 or just flat out 400?? Please help
I don't get four hundred either. Even at 40 miles per gallon. It's quite a bit less range.
My 2019 Civic EXL is averaging 38.5/MPG highway and city combined. I paid around $24000 OTD for this car. So, I'm not impressed with the 2023 CRV Hybrid. I know that the CRV is way bigger than my Civic, but the hybrid is not worth the extra expensive for just a little better MPG's. The Honda CRV 2.0 L engine is doing all the work at highway speeds.
I have the same car and get similar numbers. I’ve definitely gotten 42mpg on long highway road trips in my civic as well.
But we’re talking about a compact sedan vs a hybrid suv so it’s not an apples to apples comparison.
The CRV hybrid in and itself is not class leading in MPG but makes up in driving dynamics and drivetrain performance. In addition the interior is really classy and minimal.
I think I’d MPG is the main focus on someone’s mind, then the Rav 4 hybrid might be a better option.
I’m probably one of the few people who likes hybrid for the way they drive over the money they could potentially save. The instant torque off the line is amazing to me.
@@goinwitdaflowAgreed. I’m picking up my CRV Hybrid in a month coming from a 18 Civic Hatchback. I get about 35-40 combined with the Civic. If I can 35 combined (or even 32+) with the CRV I’ll still be very happy with that. Before going with the CRV, I test drove the CRV Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid back-to-back and for me it wasn’t even close. The CRV driving experience was so smooth and it was very quiet. RAV4 was simply just decent.
@@nickhansen8874 nice! I would go even far to say that you could even beat that 35mpg on your CRV hybrid no problem, especially during the spring, summer and early fall.
What made you upgrade to the CRV hybrid?
I’ve been entertaining some thoughts of moving up to a CRV hybrid. Im more of a compact sedan/hatchback guy myself, but the new CRV hybrid is very compelling.
@@goinwitdaflow I wanted something a bit bigger (and still nimble enough in traffic -not a full size SUV) with AWD. The Civic Hatchback is an awesome car that’s fun to drive but for me it sat so low to the ground. I’d bottom out quite a bit (had to replace the bottom front bumper piece which was expensive) and just in general exiting the vehicle is a bit easier in something with higher ground clearance.
I was originally going to go with the Sportage Hybrid as I absolutely loved the interior and tech but they are so hard to find in the upper trim that I wanted. One thing I learned from driving the gas Sportage and the lower trim Sportage Hybrid, is that the Hybrids offer you so much more initial acceleration. The Sportage gas version was pretty underpowered. The Hybrid was perfect but unfortunately the top trim is pretty extinct at the moment.
So recently, I started my search over again (couldn’t find any Toyota or Honda hybrids that were available to test drive earlier this year) and based on my learnings from the Sportage, I knew that the Hybrid is what I would want that would have the initial acceleration I was looking for. Since I have a Civic and have liked it a lot, I naturally thought the CRV Hybrid would def be an option. Then of course the RAV4 Hybrid was going to be a choice. I was also considering Mazda CX-5/50 but they seemed a little small for what I was looking for.
So then I actually went to drive the vehicles. Going in, I thought I was going with the Rav because of the additional features they offered, but man that CRV interior was just really nice and high quality albeit a bit simplistic (especially compared to the Sportage) and it just drove so smooth and quietly. The Rav was pretty decent and no major complaints. It’s a great vehicle but the CRV just felt real premium to me over the Rav in most respects. I do wish the CRV came with ventilated seats, but I may look into an aftermarket solution to get that.
Then finally when it came down to it, the CRV was giving me what I truly wanted and that was a bigger vehicle (than the Civic) that drove nice and got good gas mileage. The last clincher was price. The top trim CRV was around $41,250 (w/destination) while the top trim RAV4 was going to run about 4-5k above that. The lower price was appealing for me.
@@nickhansen8874 Wow! Thank you for that write up. Sounds like you made a good choice! I’m hoping they come out or announce an HRV hybrid for US market (I doubt anytime soon). I feel like that would be a healthy compromise for me. Although im not ruling out the CRV hybrid either.
Yeah Kia definitely has the tech inside of their cars. More features for the price point. The thing for me with Kia/Hyundai, is the inconsistency in their lineup. They churn out a lot of redesigns yet I feel like they don’t take time to refine their platforms. It seems more like their main focus is to undercut competition with pricing, but their mechanicals are questionable (at least for me).
The california hills are not forgiving with the MPG.
My 2007 Honda crv has 510k on it. You cant go wrong with a Honda crv or toyota rav 4. In fact any vehicles those two companies make.
My 2007 CRV 2WD has 125k on it. After 16 years I still haven broken it in yet! On a recent eastbound trip across South Dakota I averaged 33 mpg. Somewhat disappointing to see that this test on a 2023 CRV didn’t do much better. Although to be fair, the 2023 CRV is bigger, heavier and is AWD. Also, my average year round mixed driving MPG’s are in the low 20’s, so….
@@schedvithe biggest difference would be city or stop and go MPG. My wife has the 1.5t CRV with AWD and we are getting 23-25mpg city and it’s not as smooth or responsive. Should have went hybrid. Fwiw I think the 2.4L was a much better engine than the 1.5t.

While we know hybrids don't get their best gas mileage on the highway, why not a city loop, or mixed loop test?
That's a good point I seen a lot of other journalists to do the city Loop mix Highway and Mix City
Because road trips are done on highways.
The EPA numbers are pretty true for city but they often suck for "highway". So this test has value
On top of what everyone else above said, city is harder to standardize. I'd have to do multiple hours of city loops to average out various stop lights, acceleration patterns, etc in order to compare vehicle to vehicle. Plus how to you regulate how hard you accelerate, brake, etc. Highway is easier to standardize. And takes less time and effort. On an hour and a half highway loop, I can generally relax, test the sound system, make calls, and process the car. In the city, it's more tense.
@@DailyMotor But city is what hybrids are for =( Your test is awesome, so it'd be so cool if you made one for the city, and even though it's hard to standardize you can simply do your best and we just accept that "your mileage may vary". But if you share without roughly what you're doing while driving, a clip of how fast you accelerate at a typical red light, we can still get a realistic number. If we see that you accelerate harder than me, then I'll know I'll probably get a little bit better gas mileage. So it still gives us something substantial to go by.
Rav4 gots higher mpg due to there is no real axle , the hybrid system over all is lighter. Im a Honda guy, but for this i would get the Rav4. Crv is more luxurious tho.
Iam stuck at 31.5 mpg my commute is only 30miles round trip average is that the reason or is it my driving? 🤣 i got the sport hybrid awd lil over 2k miles

Its a shame the hybrid is not even that fuel efficient. Plus side is it is more natural feeling cause the gas motor and electric motor are not switching back and forth. Its just the electric motors propelling it

Hybrid vehicles have no major benefit for highway driving as there is less regenerative driving.
i dont sit on the highway and wouldnt get a hybrid for highway do this test in city that i care about
I dont understand why they would build a hybrid where the engine is a generator.... that would mean it would have to produce more power than the ev motor uses. So why not just use only the same motor without the ev motor and battery added weight? Wouldnt it be more efficient with the fewer lbs? Its not a plug in so that battery is soley getting the power from the engine.
I'm getting 47mpg with my 2023 Accord Sport. How you drive the car impacts the MPG. I don't think you understand how to drive a hybrid.
You car is fwd, touring is awd. Not apple to apple comparison.

I will say that driving at 65 vs 70-75 will make a difference.
Also to keep in mind 40+ mpg is for the city driving because it prioritizes hybrid/ battery only mode
i think it depends on the driver because i average 43 mpg and i rive on the highway and on local roads so

This is why Honda lots are full of CRV hybrids while you'll never find a rav-4 hybrid in stock at the Toyota lot. Big L for Honda
