    We just traveled with our cat from Missouri to Florida. Here’s a tip: To eliminate odor completely and keep the car clean, buy a shallow, long Tupperware container with a lid and use it as a litter box. Whenever the cat poops and pees, you can immediately clean the poop out and put the lid back on, or if you need to continue driving, just put the lid back on immediately and it will stop the smell.

    Awesome video, thanks! Just a couple tips I wanted to add :)
    I like feline pine as a larger-grained litter. My cat’s already used to it but some cats don’t really like it and may need a transition period.
    Also I totally recommend leaving your carrier out leading up to the trip and getting your cat familiar with it (so they don’t associate it with stressful events). I give my kitty treats in it every day or two to make him go in it regularly. I just took him on his first little practice car ride and he did really well. I’m going to keep taking him on drives and slowly increase the duration so he knows that it doesn’t always have to mean going to the vet or a new home.
    I may also try letting him roam around the car while I’m driving but only if I know I can get him back in his crate (I have nightmares of him getting loose outside the car and chasing him around a gas station 😬)

    • @HiroKitty
      @HiroKitty หลายเดือนก่อน

      I definitely agree with exposing them to the crate at all times. My cat loves to just sleep in it and basically treats it like another box. He's perfectly fine with his carrier

    I envy you. Four years ago, we traveled from AR to NY state with two cats and it was a nightmare. The drive took two fulls days. One cat cried most of the way and when we got to the hotel, neither one of them would eat, drink or use their makeshift litter box we made. And now we are talking about another possible move, maybe to AZ or CA and I just don't see how they would tolerate that. The travel carriers we bought for them were much larger than the usual ones we use to take them to the vet, so they had plenty of room. It was quite traumatizing for them. Or maybe more so for me and my husband!

My cats froze when they came out so it was easy to carry both of them. I had TSA precheck too which was very helpful because I didn’t need to take anything out of my carry on or remove my shoes.

      Temari305 I just drove from Nevada to Florida with my cat. Just me and her. 3 1/2 days in a car! I kept her in the carrier while driving because she was all over the car. Trying to get up under the dash, under my feet, etc. Just not safe. I also got some calming treats and spray at the pet store that seemed to help a little. I found a list of pet friendly hotels online before leaving, so I knew what hotel chains were accepting. I got her a smaller litter box than her usual one, just to make it easier going in and out of hotels. I also kept it behind the seat, because I would let her out of the carrier when I stopped for lunch, gas, etc. I would pull over, sit in the car and eat while she stretched her legs some. Then back in her carrier when it was time to drive again. I never let her out of the carrier unless we stayed in the car together, or were in the hotel room. The first day was rough. She screamed the entire time, and drove me to insanity. I only drove about 4-5 hours that first day to get her used to what was happening, by the 3rd day she was in routine. Car carrier by day, free roam of the hotel room at night. I think letting her roam around the hotel room was what saved us both. It gave her a chance to roam and me a chance to relax at night from driving all day. Hope this helps. Good luck and safe travels.

    As I told my cat when I left Cali for Georgia. and it will be the same conversation when I leave Georgia back for California. he is not allowed in the driver's seat until he gets a driver's license!

    So your biggest tip is to travel with Pippin? Just kidding :) What a sweet cat. We're getting ready to move back to CT from Colorado and one of my cats is just this side of feral. He will be a challenge.

    • @BajaGirl302
      @BajaGirl302 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joey Dinero I’m not by no means knowing about traveling with cats, although I have seen most people posting that they are nervous or terrified or you name it. My suggestion would be for you to be stress free and relaxed, and I’m pretty sure your cats will fall in line. Maybe practice runs with them in the car for some outings. And if all else fails, drug em! Kidding, although they do make calming aids that are natural and work well

    Most experts say to not let the cats out in the car. I'm going to be travelling from Maryland to Florida with 3 cats during this pandemic. I've accustomed them to a super large carrier with a bed in it. I'm thinking maybe I will keep a seperate small carrier with the litter box.

    I’m afraid my cat will dart out of the car when I stop at a rest stop or when I need to load her up for the hotel. Doesn’t sound like you have that issue.
    I’m not looking at driving the distance you are. But frequent trips from Id, to Wa, to Ca, Az, Ks, Ut. So it could be as far- but in a rotation staying with people for weeks to months on end.

    I drive everywhere with my cat since I travel for work and he scratches the back of the seats. So I kinda Macgyvered one of those cheap scratch boards that you hang vertically on your door to the back of my seat and it works for him and my seats are torn to shreds

    My cat uses a litter box. I bought throw away huge roaster Pan from dollar tree and big bag of chicken feed plus black plastic bags. After she poops I pull over to nearest gas station or rest stop and pick it up using potty bag. Then poop bag closed inside shopping bag with other trash. Toss it out in regular trash outdoors.

    Lucky for you to have a calm kitty like pippen. My cat (PJ) is not so much on car rides. So what I was told to do is get a calming spray that reduces the cat's stress with some hormone of some kind. Just ask a pet store person for the "all natural" calming stuff. And it smells nice. Just so you know there is something available in case you need it.

    • @YogaBlissDance
      @YogaBlissDance 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only thing that works with very frisky, inquisitive cats is water- a spray bottle with a forceful squirt will train any cat where to not go. They hate it. Not a mist, a single stream, usually 3x's same place and they get it.
