If I remember correctly Gafford was used a lot as a post scorer in college. Probably explains why he can put the ball on the floor a bit and has better touch than the average rim-rolling big
he was starting to develop a mid range game in his sophomore year, been waiting for him to bring it out in nba
If Dallas wants to take the next step they'll use him more when bigs switch to their ball handlers.
Gafford, clearly, can play. And he seems to be highly motivated, not to forget Mavs are capable to utilize him, they have a guy or two who are capable to provide steady supply of useful balls.

PJ and Gafford seem to enjoy the Mavs a lot, Gafford seems like he fits the team like a glove on both sides, and Luka makes Gafford look like a god on the offense. His energy and ability on both sides have made the Mavs one of the most dangerous teams when healthy. I can see them win this year if their defense, energy and health can hold.
Kidd benches this guy when they are on panic mode. Kidd thinks Kleber improves their perimeter def and ability to close out which is not true. Kidd also gives up on 2nd chance points with this move.

I think defensively he sometimes is very bad. Especially in pick and roll situations his decisions are mind boggling. Tho he is good when he acts in the drop under the rim and can play help defense. I think this might be the reason kidd benches him. But I also think that this is something the training staff has to recognize and teach gafford to get better in. He is young and very athletic. With the right coaching his defense can become really good

@@finng1571 Kleber currently is not significantly better at pnr defense and can't drop cover effectively. Also you are giving up alot of offensive rebound opportunities with Kleber out there as the only big in which Kidd frequently using to close out games. Maxi doesn't look like he can still defend positions 1-5 anymore and his shooting is shaky.
Also Kleber decision making in tough games are mind boggling aswell.

He’s been a phenomenal acquisition for Dallas. He’s played enough games where he’s warranted to have a bad game and not be on the chopping block.
