The patting meter doesn’t expect vacation pay, holiday pay, sick leave pay, maternity leave pay, health insurance, overtime pay, hazardous pay, break-time pay, workers’ compensation insurance, medicare, social security, unemployment insurance, a retirement plan or pension plans, annual pay raises, won’t sue the owner for sexual harassment, deal with employee grievances and complaints, discrimination, worksite adjustments to accommodate religious rights, liability claims, the meter owner doesn’t have to pay high payroll taxes, payroll accounting expenses, hiring costs, doesn’t need to establish an HR department, or file dozens of complicated required State, Federal, and local payroll reports, new meters don’t need to be trained, supervised, disciplined, can be easily “fired” or replaced without drama or repercussions, won’t resort to company sabotage or spitting into or contaminating the food if disgruntled, one meter is not jealous of other meters who make more money, meters can’t be rude to customers, and can’t unionize. And a lot more. Try starting a business and hiring people and find out for yourself.
