I am a true green lefty - certainly left of labour but have to say Simon is a class comedy act...he knows the line - is very articulate, extremely clever and even funnier! Never thought of Simon as right wing but a repressed middle class small Englander, who finds most of modern Britian irritating and at times baffling...a stereotype of a character. Never nasty, rascist but just pushes those sceptical buttons really well and comes across as a deep down self-effacing gent. An asset to Brighton, which probably irritates him as well !
He's deffo on the right-ish side of the line. I remember seeing him live once when he said that the audience may have trouble placing his accent and then when on to explain, it is in fact "educated"... class stuff.
@@teecee1567 Yeah. I saw that joke on a clip. As an American, I saw that joke more as a "Snob thing" than a 'class thing'. I,e, an Intellectual. In The States a lot of intellectuals think of themselves as liberals. Not that Simon seems 'liberal'. Lol He seems, to me, what we call "Center-Right". Conservative, but reasonable.
i get the feeling he probably gets as much air time as he wants - he seems pretty in control of what he does and also seems to be involved in a lot of writing as well as performing. i only first heard him yesterday and he's impressive - funny and clever.
I think anyone who has a scent of the right just doesn't get booked. Probably get yourself cancelled in many universities. The left has mugged the intellectual high ground and sneer at those they then define as thick, far right, racist, and white. It's time the right re-established a right wing comedy position - but is there an audience that still exists after all that abuse?
Cracking interview all round……😊 Simon is easily my favourite comedian working today…….. and now, proven to be an all round good egg 🥳intelligent, thoughtful and articulate……… Good man, Carry On.
Not only is it not controversial but just before he did the burger king sketch Alistair Williams did a pro-Remain sketch! As punishment for having the audacity to present a balanced, even-handed non-partisan routine he was ostracised by the comedy circuit because they're so terrified of the Guardianista Stasi.
Excellent interview fuelled by excellent questions and a presenter willing to give time for thoughtful answers. The lefty comedians I hear on Radio 4 are conformists who repeat each other's sneery remarks about the Daily Mail, Brexit, immigration, Suella Braverman, GB News, Rishi Sunak and Jacob Rees Mogg. It's so tedious that I switch off the News Quiz or anything with Mark Steel. Luckily I don't pay for this via a TV licence because I have no TV. You tube is better!
Simon Evans is a very clever and funny man. The presenter isn't bad, but when will presenters learn to let their guests speak? Its so annoying to hear a presenter cut them off when they are really getting going. There is an art to 'presenting' and some really get it right and we love them for it, and others, not so much!
I have to say, much as I enjoy Simon Evans' routine, I do often wish he would spend more time developing his material and less time banging on about what's wrong with comedy. What's wrong with comedy today? It's not anything to do with political correctness - it's that a comedian of Evans's talent can work the same material for fifteen years running and never feel the need to write anything new.
Heard the Radio4 recording so this caught my eye. Comedy is a funny old world isn't it? i do get fed up with this current Stand-up format of one person doing a 30 min repetitive blah (i go to many live shows) and the fact it is oh so politicised, and left view is compulsory right now. As you said simon, Rule 1: comedians have to make people laugh if they want to actually get paid, therefore your material has to be what people want.
If a bit worried about myself, that my two favourite comedians today are Simon and Stuart Lee. I have no idea why, but they both are a bit original and are working a deeper vein than those who bounce across the stage with observations …..maybe it’s because both are must sees when analysing their comedy, and their ability to come away from their stage performance and give a considered position on what they are doing develop in their art.
Comedy is inherently left-wing in the true sense of the term, because by nature it mocks "the establishment" (in the broadest sense, - not just political, but established notions, pretentiousness etc). A comedy double act will often have a straight man who embodies pretentiousness or some kind of order, an a subversive comic partner. Of course "left wing" as the term is now commonly understood IS the establishment, the enforced groupthink and cancel culture.
This is the Right Wing comedian that I was told was a Right Wing a**hole by cancel culture and Hard Remainers? Seems rational and measured to me. I don't see why a Soft Remainer/Soft Leaver like me is supposed to hate them.
Once you said 'cancel culture' I knew that your comment wasn't going to go well. No one said you should hate anybody. And WTF is a 'Hard Remainer'??? Richard! Come on, you can do better than this!
I'm middle of the road politically but feel that the current narrative in this country, and probably elsewhere, gives comedians a shield to hide behind. If the f-off 'gag' was used against me I'd of wanted my money back. There's too much of a reliance on bad language anyway, if you need sweating and crudeity in your act that your not very good. I turn plenty off because of that. The greats such as Bob Monkhouse never had to pad it out like that.
When Simon Evans said he was going to be a comedian everybody laughed. Well, they're not laughing now are they? Did he come up with brexit? That's a joke. He's as funny as a tory. Competiton from other tory comics though. I saw a fab Double act. 2022 summer season: Truss & Kwateng - clowns & magicians who made all this money disappear. The seats were too expensive. They were following a long run by this big fat tousled haired buffoon who wouldn't leave the stage. Loads of people walked out. He's still on tour but now he keeps getting bad reviews... I've got a million of 'em- I'm here all week
A very very funny comedian. Especially when he's taking the piss out of the inhabitants behind the "red wall". Even though there's lots to disagree with him on his sociopolitical philosophy.
I was surprised to hear Simon say it was a good thing to have affirmative action to make sure there were as many females as males on a show, even if it made the show less funny.
Why do conservatives think helping your follow man is " leftist ". That says more about them then the homeless. Oh, and we aren't laughing with you, Simon. We are laughing at you.
22,000 views, 51 comments, 2,370 subscribers... All opinions welcome? It doesn't seem that anyone's listening. Simon Evans is quite funny as a stand-up though.
A so called intelligent bloke walk away from me at the gym when Trump first got in, because I dared to ask what he's has done compared to any other politician. TDS is a weird thing.
Comedy is not in any way left, far from it. The BBC/CNN/Communists ban anyone who doesn't sing their tune. That's why comedy has become totally dead (which is the way they want it). "Don't laugh slave just do as you are told".
Comedy has gone Woke and its just not funny any more. How many times can you ridicule Brexit, Boris and Trump before becoming stale and lame? The majority reject Woke and the 'comedy' that it evokes.
The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or Euratom), and the European Economic Community (EEC); the last of which was renamed the European Community (EC) in 1993 by the Maastricht Treaty, which formed the European Union only ever had one purpose, and that was to so interlock all the European countries in each others pockets so as to make it impossible for Europe to go to war again, that is its core principles, to thwart and regulate each others economy's not to strengthen them, I am of the De Gaulle camp, he knew that Europe was saved from the Nazi's because Britain was an island fortress and he wanted to keep it as such, We are well shot of it!.
Comedy is not left wing! Comedy is about people and society. People are anti-Trump because he is an incompetent idiot. Evans' comedy isn't left or right wing, it's sarcastic. From almost any unbiased perspective, the far " Right " is incompetent and not funny and the far " Left " is insane and not funny.
So a left winged comedian has an easier audience, since they don't read up properly on current or previous big issues? It's sad to hear, but I'm guessing not far from the truth.
Mock the Week is will be gone in another couple of weeks -- but Brexiteers will still be here laughing our socks off and still loving Nigel Farage. Bye, bye Dara and the tiresome, mindless, endless, predictable left-wing clichés, sarcasm, and ad hominem which since 2016 was presented as humour. lol.
Glad that Brexiteers are still laughing. Pity you lot aren't helping the rest of us with our bills and our wage cuts. But keep adding 'lol' to everything you say and we'll think you are such caring and light-hearted people.
Typical Daubney interview. How come when Labour were in power all the Left Wing comics still took the piss? It's just that Tory supporters and Right Wing types just don't like being criticsed.
I am a true green lefty - certainly left of labour but have to say Simon is a class comedy act...he knows the line - is very articulate, extremely clever and even funnier! Agreed. When the host called him 'a right wing comic' my brain went ERRR?'

He seems, to me, what we call "Center-Right". Conservative, but reasonable.
Nah, he's about as right-wing as it comes
He’s only right wing when compared to most other comedians
Simon is so interesting to listen to. I wish he got more TV air time .....he is also a very funny man.

A bright, funny, articulate man, who I could listen to all day. I voted remain.
Love the guy, a one off, brilliant comedian, different class
Cracking interview all round……😊
Simon is easily my favourite comedian working today…….. and now, proven to be an all round good egg 🥳intelligent, thoughtful and articulate……… Good man, Carry On.
Really good and articulate interview. Love Simon Evans
Great comedian, a fan for years.
Love Simon as a comedian but also wow what an interviewee, thoroughly enjoyed.
i just watched that burger king sketch and cannot see what's so controversial about it - seems like a pretty tame and not inaccurate analogy.
I'm a great fan; Simon is the most drole comedian of the age.
........droll.
6:52 - These days, if you say you're English, You'll be thrown in to jail - Stuart Lee
Enjoyable discussion, thanks.
An outstanding performance from each side of the table
Saw him live at our small Town Hall , very funny man. In ‘ real life’ ☺️ he’s just has he appears on TV. Lovely man.
Excellent interview fuelled by excellent questions and a presenter willing to give time for thoughtful answers. Great analysis....lot of time for Simon Evans.

I thought Martin did a pretty good job in that respect. All I could hear was Simon’s voice
A very, very good interview...

Remember when Brexit was the biggest story in the UK. 😭
Inconveniently, other news came along to mask its benefits. ;-)
The tapestry gag was great

The better question to ask would've been "why isn't comedy funny any more?" I haven't seen a funny comedian for about 20 years!
What about Boris?
@@philipcamp1370 He's not funny... he's just a prick like ALL the other politicians!
Was the comedian 'Nish Kumar', by any chance?
I would love to see him on taskmaster

Simon is clearly an vry intelligent man who see's things as they are , not as some people wish they are
A drag act is a marginalised person? When everyone is required to go along with their LARPing they are in charge, not marginalised.

I wonder what arguments Simon will be using today in 2022? Will he still be defending Brexit and the performance of the Tory Government?
At 06:10 , #AlistairWilliams (#BurgerKingBrexit ) is excellent.✌
"If you voted for Brexit, fuck off now". Bet that "comedian" wouldn't refund their tickets though.
Good thinking.

Comedy genius 👏👏👏👏
"He's written loads & loads for television!!" who wrote this intro, a 12 year old?
In terms of the iceberg, he's right.
If what's been said here is true, it just goes to show how out of touch politicians and comedians are with half the population then?
“Basically a bit thick” seems a pretty astute assessment of Trump supporters and hardcore Brexiteers. Simon’s a great comic though.

TDS is a weird thing.
Inreally like Simon's comedy but IU can't agree entirely with some of his stances.
the posh Geoff Northcott - I kind of admire his bravery but also wonder if he's a bit of a complacent old boomer :)
Brexit still going on, pre-covid... Golden years ! 😂
Sorry Simon. The women on Mock the Week are very weak. Even today.
Oh look. He has got eyes.
Centre-right I don't mind

Funny is funny
So the boys had to grind their way through the comedy clubs but the girls get to go straight to telly? Hmmmmm
there is no connection.
You could talk bollocks for the UK
Ben Elton and Alexei Sayle architects of comedic groupthink - take your brain out and follow the script guys
You are very ironic
