    I worked for Groen Brothers Aviation (GBA) from 1994 to 2008. I purchased nearly every component on the Hawk 4 prototypes and witnessed many of the flight tests where the vertical takeoffs and landings were performed. GBA was on the cusp of certifying the aircraft when the attacks on 9/11/2001 occurred. That event kicked the barrel out from under the company. GBA clawed their way back for another 7 years and it looked like they might finally get into production when the recession of 2008 dealt a death blow to the company. It never recovered after that.

    Gyro may use a little more landing area than helicopters but they a lot more stable than a fixed wing aircraft for landing in cross and high wind take offs and especially cross wind landings . In fact in many instances , heading into high winds gives them an advantage since they gain more energy in the rotors why using less horsepower creating many of the extremely short take offs and landings while being faster and cheaper to operate than helicopters .

    After WWI the mail delivery was deciding to go with Gyros or bi-planes, I think the only reason the planes won it is because there were several pilots ready to go as well as planes. The auto gyro would have had many benefits over the plane. There was an old video I saw where the gyro was lust lowering a mail bag on a rope while they man on the ground ran beside it and unhooked the bag. The auto gyro would have meant more reliable delivery though with weather.

    • @gazinbali6039
      @gazinbali6039 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm.. actually Autogyros aren't good at hovering.. helicopters can because the rotors are powered.. but a Gyro needs a constant airflow to stay aloft.. it can be done if the wind is strong enough.. maybe over 30 Knots or so.. but thats not good weather to be lowering a mailbag..

    • @efesair4336

      Zero stall speed is not really correct. When the rotor does not spin fast enough, a gyro will drop..and that very very fast. And in order for a rotor to spin, airspeed is needed. If the pitch is too high and the energy is washed off, a gyro will drop out of the sky. Same like a stall. Difference is, the stall on a conventional wing is based on angle of attack, not on airspeed. A gyro on the other hand it is a bout the energy that is needed to spin the rotor, thus to produce lift.

    • @KutWrite
      @KutWrite 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you can stall a rotor, but the recovery is simply down collective.
      You do NOT need forward speed for the rotor to produce lift; that's why it rotates. To autorotate, you only need air passing through the rotor disk with proper application of collective.
      On the ground, air produced by the thrust engine keeps the rotor spinning without forward motion. That's how they can do those jump starts.

    • @cameronlapworth2284
      @cameronlapworth2284 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KutWrite Actually generally you can't stall it other than unloading (negative g) as the rotor unlike a helicopter is always in autorotation as the angle of incidence of the blade is generally below 4 degrees. Some of the jump take off gyros in the 1930's allowed for a short excusion to 6 degrees or more but flew at an angle that would not allow it to stall. This is why you don't really need a rotor tacho in a normal (non-jump gyro - if you know how to wind up rotors) you would definitely need one in any sort of jump take off gyro as you need to know you have enough energy stored to succeed in he jump.

    These are beautiful modern aircraft's. I see, and understand the rotor technology, but those rotors look like they are driven by the engine, via, a clutch setup to spin the rotor rpms (315-450) to take off vertically. I understand the stored energy in the rotor rpms, but it would have to be under relative sustained power to hover.

    • @ArthurGemperle
      @ArthurGemperle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are right they only can hover if the rotor is driven like the Rotodyne's jet driven rotor with compressed air during take-off and landing

      They are taking off using pre-rotation to be able to "jump start". once flying a "hover" into a reasonably light breeze is easy to accomplish. I could fly my air commander at as low as about 8 knots, which is only a light wind.

    How does a rotor with no direct engine power main totation for hovering to landing or for vertical takeoff?

    • @ArthurGemperle
      @ArthurGemperle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron, On ground the rotor is pre rotatet with the engine to a higher RPM than in flight. The rotor pitch is negative, so the gyro wont take off. Also tip weight is added. With all that stored energy positive pitch is added. The engine is now disconnected from the rotor system and the gyro jumps up from the ground, during that time forward speed is added and the gyro flies in normal autorotation.
      For landing the stored energy is used to hover for a few seconds.
      The gyro cannot sustain hover without strong head wind.
      I hope that helps

    • @ArthurGemperle
      @ArthurGemperle  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Jay , you are correct , the gyrocopter has no engine powered rotor in flight. It is driven only by airflow. However on ground the rotor is prerotated by the engine . The vertical take off gyro can use the stored energy in the rotor system to take off vertical by changing the pitch on the rotor blades . I hope I could help !

    • @KutWrite
      @KutWrite 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's pre-rotated by air flow produced by the thrust propeller. The engine is not connected to a gyroplane's rotor.

    • @situbes.972
      @situbes.972 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On regular gyro, you would use the engine power to get the main rotor spinning than disconnect. Than you would speed up with rear thruster and the airflow thru the rotor would finally produce lift. With gyrocopter you need air moving front to back across the main rotor to provide lift. If you stall main rotor you to have altitude and quick reflex to recover. There are flying maneuver that only a gyrocopter can do and no other aircraft can but it takes skill to pull off.

    • @BULPIN847
      @BULPIN847 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +KutWrite it's not the thrust what's the picture of the blades change and you have to use an electric or hydraulic deal to get the rotor spinning on the ground the wheels hold it from turning round and round cheese

    • @ArthurGemperle
      @ArthurGemperle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching.
      On those Gyros there is no torque on the rotor. The rotor on the big Gyro is driven by compressed air coming out of the rotor tips.
      By all other smaller gyros the rotor is only driven for a very short time with the momentum from high RPM pre rotating.

    So help me understand this…
    Without a tail rotor, there is no way it can hover for a long time. The only way I believe they accomplished this is by doing this…
    Pre rotate the rotor to a much higher rpm than a normal gyro can do.
    Use a rotor with adjustable pitch
    Once rotor is up to speed, launch it up and gain altitude
    Pitch up and use the motor at the back to gain speed and autorotate the main blades back to normal operating speeds
    Fly it like a normal gyrocopter.
    This is an interesting concept which I never thought of before. If I got the process wrong, someone please correct me. I bought an MTO sport recently and don’t know too much about autogyros.

      You are right 480 MPH is far fetched , it is the future far away.Rotodyne in 1960 did almost 200 MPH impressive

    where's the tail rotor? thanks

      Thanks for watching
      On a Gyrocopter you don't need a tail rotor.
      The rotor is driven by the air flow moving forward therefore is no torque on the body. On a helicopter the rotor is driven by the engine, while the rotor turns the body wants to turn the opposite way that's why you need a tail rotor to stop that.
      This is not the case on a Gyrocopter

    Some of these Vertical Takeoff-planes/"copters" can only lift for some meters and cannot land vertical, so have no real copter-function.

    I thought gyrocopters needed a small runway to take off. most of them do right? I am very surprised to see this video of gyrocopters taking off vertically.

      Thanks for watching, you are right most of the Gyrocopter needs a small runway. The vertical take off are very few and very complicated to fly. I have flown with my Magni Gyrocopter almost 1900hr. that is more than 4 time around the world in distance.

    I thought the entire point of a gyrocopter or autogyro was that the rotors weren't powered, thus, VTOL shouldn't be possible. With powered rotors, most of these are helicopters by definition.

    Gyrocopters cant take off vertically.. WHY? the rotor is free wheeling... the motor in the back pushs the vehicle forwards and the rotor blades are on a backward angle to the force.. hence the spin when its moving forward.
    yes the can land and take off in a short distance, but not straight up.

    Any gyrocopter can take off and land vertically if the wind is blowing hard enough, lol.
