Unfortunately it's not legal to commute with an unlicensed vehicle. You'll need an "experimental" registration for the aircraft - basically you have to build from kit, do test flights, and have yearly inspections. Commuting requires a private pilot license or better: medical exam, ground school, 45 hours logged. Figure about $10,000 of schooling.
Fortunately this gives you the other private pilot privileges: flying at night or over congested areas, most small airports, talking to ATC. All airports if you have the necessary equipment and endorsement. Motorcycle is much cheaper.

great video. Only problem I see in the design is that the strut from the rear wheels points directly to the pilot. If it comes down too hard, the structure should be able to take the impact and not pierce the pilot. But it's hard to judge a design without seeing it close up.

+Shawn Adams 3,000 hours is a year and a half of full-time employment, so it's quite a bit for test-flying this machine. It takes only a few weeks of learning to be able to properly drive an automobile on town and city streets, plus highways, including different ways of parking; and then it takes a careful learner to be able to learn driving during wintery conditions, f.e. That's a total of at most two full-time weeks (of hours), for slow learners. So, 3,000 hours means you have plenty of experimentation with your flying machine.
Sure, driving a ground motor vehicle can get tricky. F.e., I was very accustomed to the Eastern Townships of the province of Quebec, Canada, all months of the year. Roads were always safely drivable for me during all seasons; except, one winter, we very unusually had "black ice" and I wasn't experienced with that. I was driving slowly but the car felt odd for control. I scratched my head like a monkey and wondered if I was hallucinating, decided to stop and get out to check the road, immediately falling or slipping backwards as I stepped out onto the road. It was super slick, fast black ice. Very unusual for the area I was in! It ended up taking about 2 1/2 hours to drive only 18 miles! I didn't know whether to turn back or not and continued onward, hoping the ice would soon end, but it didn't.
Well, it didn't take me 2 1/2 hrs to learn to drive on the icy surface. 2 1/2 hrs is only for the duration of the short trip. The learning happened in a matter of minutes. The driving speed became 5, 6 mph, crawling. Yes, I learned from the whole experience, but it didn't take more than at most a few minutes to drive safely with this road condition.
So, 3,000 hrs is truly significant experience.

    • @rotorshawn

I'm feeling this one for around $15,000. New there are around $25,000. It holds 5 gallons and will fly for about 45 to 60 minutes per tank depending on how you're flying it.

I will assume the gyrocopter pilot knows that the Triumph bike was just “taking it easy” and not hammering on the throttle? The bike can easily outrun the gyrocopter, however the copter can fly over anywhere :) good trade offs for each...

Given that the rotor of the autogyro does NOT have an engine, how, you may ask, can this thing keep flying? Well, here's the answer: the autogyro ISN'T totally non-motorized! At the rear of the aircraft is a propeller that DOES have an engine; it's the propeller that provides thrust for the autogyro. The only thing the auto-rotating rotor provides is lift. Indeed, did you know that a conventional helicopter can also use autorotation to land safely in the event of an engine failure? Well, it's true!
Here's how a helicopter differs from an autogyro: a helicopter has TWO rotors: namely one main rotor at the top, and a smaller rotor on the tail; both of these are motorized. Thus, the main rotor of a helicopter provides BOTH lift AND thrust. As for the tail rotor: that rotor is there to prevent the body of the chopper from rotating in the opposite direction of the main rotor! This tail rotor, then, is positioned perpendicular to the chopper's forward motion. To provide thrust, the pilot tilts the main rotor forward. Yes, this does point the helicopter's nose toward the ground; but this DOES NOT cause it to lose altitude, unlike with pointing the nose of a fixed-wing aircraft toward the ground.
An autogyro, on the other hand, has a NON-motorized main rotor and a motorized rear propeller that's positioned in the same direction as the aircraft's forward movement. So in the autogyro, then, the auto-rotating rotor provides lift only; while the propeller provides all the trust the craft needs. All the pilot needs to do to turn the autogyro is tilt the rotor in the direction he or she wishes to turn.

Back in the early 1970's I learned to fly and bought a small fixed wing plane Ercoupe N87101. During my time flying out of Westosha Airport located in Welmont, Wi. I met one of the guys who built the first Gyrocopter.I believe he flew out of Kenosha, Wi but made many trips to Westosha about 20 minutes away which had a 1500 foot blacktop runway and a grass runway and Westosha was located out in the farm land of Wisconsin. The guy who built the first Gyrocopter had a first name of Paul. Don't remember his last. After 15 years of flying I lost my medical card and first child heading to college.

The reason no anti-torque system or tail rotor is needed is because the rotorblade is NOT powered. It is a free wheeling unit;therefor, no anti-torque or tail rotor is needed. I've had four engine failures (now have a new engine), they land very sweet and in the area the size of your car. They are usually home-built. Mine was about $7500. Yes, much cheaper than a motorcycle. And once you fly one of these the motorcycle just usually gets sold! There is no-one texting up there, and no-one with blue hair up there. Dig it, but get TRAINING or you will probably become part of the carbon cycle.
