Today was my second time taking a lesson with the guys at Adventure Air. Peter and Henry are great instructors. My lesson with Henry this week was very relaxed, very informative and a lot of fun. I felt a lot more comfortable flying.
I just discovered gyros after seeing one in my local aeronautical university, someone told me it was a helicopter! It didn’t look like one at all so I searched it and now I’m obsessed. I think this is my dream! Working with gyros, flying them and learning all about them, maybe even building them.
You have a great tone and communication to make your passenger feel comfortable, great job and awesome gyro! I didn’t know how stable they were or at least this one
Excellent presentation & intro onto Gyros. I’ve sent it to my wife as she has her first flight in a couple of days I am undertaking lessons & she is super nervous. Your calm / easy demeanour will do wonders for her. Thank you Gary in Australia 🙏👍🏾
Cool video! De la Cierva was a real genious when he invented the gyrocopter (autogiro). He was so sad about loosing pilots when those old engines failed and he invented something that was saber than anything else those days.
Wow!! You make it look so incredibly easy I had thoughts that even I could achieve flight in one. I imagined flying around here, Marlborough & Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand. Every flight would be stunning.
Wow, I'v been flying gliders for the past 24 years, thought there was nothing better......love ya gyroplane, landing it without power was identical to landing a glider.
This is one of our earlier videos when the channel was newer and we were still trying to find our niche. If you watch our more recent videos, you'll notice the background music isn't as prevalent.
Wow, I wish I would’ve had an instructor this good. My instructor was a very poor one who did not teach me to fly like this. He mostly showed off his abilities, wasted my time and did not teach me anything. I took several lessons with him from what I remember and eventually I ended up quitting the sport.
You know, I had a heated debate with someone here a few days ago. I dont care if gyrocopter is copywrited. The plane of this aircraft is a gyroscopically balanced rotor, that makes it a gyro copter. Nothing about this is an airplane. Nothing.
It's called a gyroplane by the US FAA, but an autogyro or autogiro in most of the world. Aerodynamically, it has more in common with a fixed-wing aircraft than it does with a helicopter, so genericizing "gyrocopter" is not as logical as you seem to believe.
People like this guy makes autogyro flying a pleasure.I don't know why my city won't consider a fully enclosed gyroplane for police duties. I have read that gyros can be as quiet as a helicopter, cost 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 less to buy, even after adding special stuff like FLIR, and have 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 lower maintenance costs. The helicopter mafia must be behind gyros being muscled out.
Interesting that you would bring that up! Henry just got back from Texas where he and the AutoGyro team presented their models to various law enforcement agencies like the Texas Rangers, CBP, and smaller municipalities. They also fired rifles from the gyros while using brass catchers. Operational cost is only about $60.00 an hour. Stay tuned for our next video which will include footage from that meetup.
Law enforcement agencies are reluctant to buy an aircraft that can't land and take off again from a spot on a highway. Some agencies have used them for aerial patrol. Here in Salt Lake City, a gyro was used for security patrols during the 2002 Winter Olympics.
They are referred to as gyroprops in some areas of Canada and UK. I watched the evolution of a paraglider into a gyroprop week after week as the pilot kept making modifications to the final gyroprop. He flew his paramotor glider every week with a different modification. I would go out and watch the pilots fly every week. One day he showed up with no air foil and a rotor mounted instead. That was the final gyroprop configuration. I overheard he had plans to put better instruments in it but the gyroprop was finished. I rather wish I could have talked to him.
I had no idea it could fly without any forward motion. Changes my opinion about their safety. This was a great and highly informative video!! Out of curiosity, as you were descending vertically over the runway, why did you need to lower the nose and raise the speed to 60mph? You didn't have to, did you? Was it just to be further down the runway to be considerate of planes behind you?
It's good practice to maintain forward airspeed when landing to stay in the height/velocity curve, as well as maintain rudder authority when landing. During an emergency, if you had to land in a confined area, you could do so without the forward airspeed.
So does a plane, as long as there's airflow over their wings. But since they're fixed, the whole aircraft has to remain in motion at a reasonable speed to generate lift, be either by it's own power or trading altitude for speed. Gyroplanes are rotating wings aircraft, so as long as the rotors keep spinning, there's airflow and lift regardless of the movement of the aircraft. But obviously it will still descend if not powered.
I'm pretty sure Gryoplanes *CAN* stall if you abuse them enough and let the rotor RPM drop too rapidly. But I think that mostly applies to certain ultralight gyros that where apparently particularly sensitive in that regard. If it happens you're in serious trouble because it might take a few hundred feet to get the rotor flying again.
Gyros are slowly becoming more popular than they used to be. The technology is actually older than helicopters but they've gotten more advanced in recent years. They are definitely more popular in Europe and we started this channel to raise awareness of them here! If you're ever in Southern California, come check us out!
Some of it has to do with earlier designs giving gyros a bad name. And these new designs are really expensive. But some are absolutely wonderful if a pilot has the right training and skill.
Great video, it was a pleasure to watch and I learned a lot. As I also have an interest in powered parachutes, I was wondering which you would consider the safest? Considering a powered parachute is always under canopy and it can also be fitted with a ballistic reserve chute for emergencies, do you think a gyroplane would be safer in an 'engine out' or bird strike scenario?
From Philippines- We dont have CFI here but we have Gyros. Just wondering how much would the CFI would charge per hour of training for 3 students at the same time. Kind of planning to organize a Gyro Flying Club in our place.
I've flown some ultralights, but I wonder what is stopping hospitals from using a long version of this to take off from a road, fly, and then land on a hospital helipad. It seems like it would be faster and more convenient, especially for patients
No one has built one large enough for medivac purposes. Generally there is a pilot, copilot/flight nurse and flight doctor.. then the patient. Size would be the restricting factor. Technology is just recently catching up with fixed wing and helicopters and many consider it to be the safest aircraft available since it can't stall and is in constant autorotation.
It depends where you live.. in the USA all that is required is a minimum of 20 hours, 15 dual instruction. That will get you a light sport aircraft -gyroplane certificate and you can fly VFR daytime only.
They start around $130,000 USD brand new. You can shop around for used and may find some costing less. Depending on where you live, you may need a full pilot's license. Check with your country's governing administration for the rules involving gyroplanes.
@@AdventureAir Thanks for your quick response. That's what I thought it was based on the interior. The Cavalon was actually the first Gyro I saw back in 2017 at Sun 'n Fun. You do a great job teaching and you should move to Florida to do your flight training! LOL

Not in the way a helicopter does. The rotors don't push air down like a helicopter, they act more like a wing on an airplane. With a strong enough headwind and a high pre-rotation speed, they can have a very short takeoff.
This reminds me of my lessons: you are as cool and relaxed as my CFI. If I were in the situation of a CFI, maybe I would bite my nails, while the student is trying to fly or better: land. 🤣 Can't wait to get in the air. "Schietwetter" at the moment here in germany...
I'm seeing the terrain thinking, "I know this". Of course, from 20-30 years ago flying literally everything fixed wing here in SoCal. But I never flew a gyro. I wanted to, but they weren't really available then. Nice!
So I see you can do these nice maneuvers and slow is fast you're really nice and smooth is it possible to upset the rotor and get a high-speed wobble like the front wheel of a motorcycle and if so what happens?
The Bensen was a very early design. It had serious faults. Almost no functional horizontal stabalizer. A twitchy engine. A early two stroke 4 cylinder that failed often.. A thrust line that was to high. No prerotator Almost no pilot protection. It had an unrecoverable pitch over problem. Very little suspension so the rotor could have stability problems on take off. The nose wheel didn't caster so it got into trouble on landings where it wasn't pointed straight down the runway. And not much forgiveness on any landing. Short takeoffs were very dangerous. The engine was hand propped. But even with all the warts there were pilots who not only survived, they did well.
After WW2, vehicles with 1/2 tracks disappeared, advancements with suspension designs means it is either wheels or tracks. Gyros are the 1/2 tracks of the sky. From what I saw in the specs, small gyros needed about as much power as a regular helicopter , maybe even more in some cases, their performance is about the same and they cannot hover. Not all of them are equipped for VTOL but then helicopter are not always VTOL either, they often use runways. A Zenith 750 will use less runways than many choppers and can fly almost as slow as a gyro. The only area they beat out the choppers are cost to buy and to operate, because they do not have a powered rotor. That is why they are not more popular.
The whole point of them was affordability, manueverability, fault tolerance, stability and VTOL (which is present in many earlier models) to compete with helicopters but everything went to s***. Maybe they can hover with the same kind of device used for jump takeoffs (a form of VTOL), a low power pre-rotator, and stabilized by the control surfaces. Compound gyroplanes are very fast, simple compared to other aircraft and somewhat competitive with airplanes, but they also were memoryholed.
Nope! Looks kinda like a helicopter, can get your rotory endorsement, very safe to fly, and costs less to learn than an airplane. Not to mention they are very fun to fly!
... We dont need no stinking Rotor blade tach,...when the blade disappears - ya got yer right RPM -ready to roll , keep it on the mains and throttle it ,she'll lift off ..... ....coming down , ya dont wanna lose the base approach rotor speed , jockey the throttle and drop the nose if'n ya need rotor speed . Easy peachy .
@AdventureAir I don't know him at all but I wish I did and I wish he would be my friend lol...anddd I wish he would pick me up in his tomahawk and then we could come see you together lol
Here's an idea, why don't you make the music so loud in the beginning that you can't hear your narration? Oh, I'm sorry, I guess you already did that. 🥴
Hi, thanks for your comment! We're always trying to improve the quality of the videos and keep viewers engaged for the whole video. Sometimes between voicing in the video, without music it makes for slow watching. We're still trying and learning video editing and we are turning down the decibel level of the background music and using ducking against the narration so hopefully that helps. If you have more constructive criticism and new video ideas, we'd really like to hear them!
No offence, but I thought a gyro was kinda dumb being that it's not as good as a helli and not as good as a plane so why would you want one. But after watching this I can see why someone would want a gyro.
No offense taken! Gyros are very misunderstood as a whole because they fit in an obscure category. They're a rotor craft that flies like a plane. It has a much lower cost of ownership and operation in general and can fit the needs of a lot of people who want to fly. They're also a much less costly way of building hours for a rotor craft rating toward helicopters.
All of these positive comments must be friends. Really hard to understand or even at times to hear the narration because of that stupid background noise (music).
We really appreciate your constructive criticism and positive comments! While we have some followers that are familiar with us, most of these comments are from people we've never met. This happens to be our most popular video at the moment and is also one of our older videos. We didn't expect the attention this video would get and were still trying to figure out the format we wanted to use. It seems our main demographic wants to see more informational style videos and we've since started to move in that direction. If you watch some of our more recent videos, you'll see that we've adjusted to fit more of our viewers' interests. Thanks again for watching and we look forward to more of your comments!

What kind of license is required? You have to have a license now to fly a drone so knowing the F.A.A. they require something. I suppose next you will need a license to bungee jump.
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! We really appreciate your constructive criticism and are striving to accommodate viewers and subscribers of all demographics. Part of our goal is to keep people engaged and to view the entire video and also bring in a younger generation that would be interested in this type of sport aircraft.
The one thing gyros do beat airplanes is the turbulence tolerance, that's it, but I wish my plane could handle turbulence as well as gyros can
@@esau82 Did you even watch the video? Or are you one of "those people"?
@@esau82 hello. is that true? how difference the tolerance in gyro compared or is it didnt feel the turbulence at all
Thanks for watching!
Wow seeing this and not knowing how they worked they looked so dangerous
I would get one if they weren't so expensive.
Music is WAY too loud. Also prefer the sound of the flight.
This is an older video. We've adjusted our editing to reflect that. Watch our newer videos!
Wow, I’m kinda jealous… this thing seems like a helicopter but ya dont need to sell your soul to learn the thing
Nope! Looks kinda like a helicopter, can get your rotory endorsement, very safe to fly, and costs less to learn than an airplane. Not to mention they are very fun to fly!
What is that noise in the background?
What is your Location ?
Chino, California at Chino Airport (CNO)
I cant explain how bad I want one of thesw
They're addicting!
What they CAN'T do that most pilots need: X-country flights.
We just flew one back from Florida to California. Isn't that cross country?
@@AdventureAir How many *days* did it take? I could do it in ~12h in a LongEZ.
@@TheTransporter007 3 days due to weather in Texas. A gyroplane also has a different mission than a LongEZ
Wow you can't do a 180 rudder turn on a dime in a plane!!
Could have done without the music. Rest of the video is great.
Thanks for watching
😂🤣
performance take off? that was longer than a boeing 777
Maybe in Microsoft flight simulator but I didn't know triple 7s took off in 300 feet.
@@AdventureAir If you take off that long then gyros make no sense, better to get a STOL plane, it can take off in 100 feet
@@OshoLee Then go buy one. No one is telling you to buy a gyroplane.
@HeavyDSparks you need this
If you know him, he has an open invite to come down and fly with us!
@AdventureAir I don't know him at all but I wish I did and I wish he would be my friend lol...anddd I wish he would pick me up in his tomahawk and then we could come see you together lol
I'd love to get a ride with him in his Blackhawk 😁
Oh I thought that it was a tomahawk 🤣 my bad lol
@0:25 For real? Any controller would lose his job for that. That is completely inexcusable.
This is a training tower, so odds are he got some remediation.
Can't pull ANY negative G with those things. At least not anywhere remotely close to the ground.
Can't pull negative Gs at all. You'll unload the rotor. Why would you?
Music sux - gave up on an otherwise good video.
+@earlbeverly thanks for watching and contributing to the algorithm!
No clearing the area before rapid turn - Low flight is a sure way to get a wire strike - We don't really care -
Being familiar with the area means you know there's no wires to strike.
@@AdventureAir No wire until someone strings one up without your knowing.
Just a typical gyro attitude I've seen before.
Reckless? Care free? Thrilling? Deadly?
Enjoy what's left . . .Over & out
@UCcOj9LfJRe11LUSqkrF-R%F0%9F%98%80TA We fly where people aren't allowed to be and are also known FAA training areas. Thanks for your concern, Over & Out 😀

100 MPH cruise isn't that slow.. still faster than a Cessna 150, and a lot nicer.
Thanks for watching!
nervous passenger
Oh not at all. He was having a great time!
@@AdventureAir Haha! I thought he was losing it when they were doing the 360.😵💫
@@duvidl it's definitely surprising if you're not ready for it!!
Thanks!
What kind of license is required? You have to have a license now to fly a drone so knowing the F.A.A. they require something. I suppose next you will need a license to bungee jump.
A sport pilot license is all that is required. At least 20 hours of instruction, including 5 hours of solo flight. No medical needed.
@heavydsparks you need this
Do you really have to play that ridiculous music? It totally competes with the dialogue.
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! We really appreciate your constructive criticism and are striving to accommodate viewers and subscribers of all demographics. Part of our goal is to keep people engaged and to view the entire video and also bring in a younger generation that would be interested in this type of sport aircraft. If you watch some of our later videos, you will see that we've made some changes to appeal to a wider range of viewers. Thanks again for your comment!
