Schubert was lying on his deathbed and the music he requested was that of Beethoven's String Quartet, Number 14, Opus 131, in C sharp minor. All throughout his life, he was an avid admirer of Beethoven.

What about 30:37 until the end? I don't think BoB portrayed this Beethoven piece truthfully by using only that small clip, and disregarding the development that *immediately* follows (not to mention the build up that proceeds). The transition from 30:34 to 30:37 is transcendent.

The players in a quartet that play any of the the late quartets MUST understand Beethoven's intentions, especially in the last movement of this piece, and this group does. I would think that you have had some pain and to have lived at least a certain amount of distress in your life. Perhaps I am to romantic in my assessment about that, but I would think it helps Beethoven touched on the deepest yearnings, pain and desire like no other composer. These players were up to it. Beautifully played!

Really. I was going to listen to late Beethoven quartets, but fortunately happend onto this incredible performance of an unbelievable work of phenomenal intricacy and intimacy which rivals anything.
Thanks Nathalie Schmalhofer, Nu Lee Joung, Sheila Browne, Ludwig Schmalhofer, Andreas Schmalhofer, Streichquintett. Could you get a more euphonious name for the quintet? Perhaps not. Bravos.

He composed this long after he lost the majority of his hearing.
The man created this beautiful, brilliant and timeless piece of music without being able hear it. He was such a musical genius that he had essentially memorized what each individual note sounded like. Then, he was able to put that down on paper, note by note, and arrange it into what we’re listening to here today. Today, around 200 years later, it’s still being enjoyed by people all over the world.
Ludwig van Beethoven was an absolute musical genius and a brilliant mind. How he was able to continue to compose music after losing his ability to hear is mind boggling.
Most people would have given up and likely would have fallen into a deep depression. Which I’m sure Beethoven considered doing at some point. How he managed to push through it though and continue to make music is incredible to me.
