I can think of a few cheesy movies that are largely forgotten today:
    - Moontrap (1989)
    - Battle Beyond The Stars (1980)
    - Cherry 2000 (1987)
The premise of Millennium reminds me of Timescape (1992).

Wow. Up until I saw this holiday special, I thought that perhaps the worst TV shows of the 1970s were the "Brady Bunch Hour" or perhaps "Pink Lady and Jeff", but "The Star Wars Holiday Special" is at least as bad...possibly worse😎

The 80's were such a fertile ground for films just like this. For sci fi fans back then it was heaven. Yet another one that I too have a special place for in my heart. Great review once again.

I remember seeing this movie after reading the novel. It was a long time ago, but I can remember that the movie didn't have some of the most interesting and creative things that were in the book. Hopefully, if I were to read it again I would say the same thing still!

I happen to particularly like the timequake concept they introduced in this movie. I've never seen it used anywhere else and I think it is a neat idea, showing consequence to altering the timeline that doesn't involve the oh so convenient history being immediately changed and that just being the end of it. It removes the mind-bending timeline tracking that the watcher has to keep up with.

I'm a retired artist and also held a teacher certificate as an art teacher .... The idea behind Book covers, Movie posters were to try to tell you a bit of the story and grab your interest with the visual imagery ... back in the 80's-90's the big rental video stores relied on those images to help them rent them. In the 70's I even had people who went to the used books stores of the Salvation Army Store to fin a Science fiction paper back with a cool looking cover so I could then airbrush that imagery on their new Van ... (Chick Magnets ... LOL) The art work of Frank Frazetta or album covers of Mouse and Kelly (Grateful Dead) ... it was a great time as the visual ability of the artist made the difference, compared to the computer generated "PhotoShop" so called artwork of today ... fun post mate...

This was one of the first time travel movie's I ever watched but the first to actually kind of make the point of paradoxes very clear.
The two leads might not have had chemistry but damn did she really have good comedic timing and come off as endearing and attractive.
Great movie in my opinion and that's NOT nostalgia talking.

I found John Varley through ''The Ophiuchi Hotline'' and guzzled down anything of his I could find after that (which unfortunately didn't amount to much, excellent though his short stories were). ''Millenium'' I found in my local video store and Varley's name leapt out at me. I enjoyed the movie, flaws included, but I'll admit I could hardly be called objective. Still, I thought the non-linear flow of the film was nicely done and it's not often you saw movies of that era prepared to embrace the concept of time paradoxes. I found it on a streaming movie channel only three weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed a nostalgia trip. And Kristofferson was just right for the part, a man who was tired of the bullshit but still involved enough and compassionate enough to care.
    Thanks for including this movie!

As a passionate science fiction film enthusiast, I couldn't agree more that this movie had untapped potential. Picture this: A younger Harrison Ford stepping into the lead role would have undoubtedly elevated the entire experience. His charisma and action-hero prowess from classics like "Blade Runner" and "Star Wars" would have brought an extra layer of excitement to the film.
Speaking of casting, assembling a stellar ensemble would indeed have been a game-changer. Perhaps pairing Ford with a talented supporting cast could have added depth and chemistry to the storyline. Imagine a dynamic duo with a younger, equally charismatic co-star.
Now, about that robot character - it's a great point! In the spirit of innovation, the filmmakers could have taken a cue from the sci-fi thriller "LUCY." The robot's consciousness could have been transferred to a high-tech USB or even an advanced AI cloud storage system. A line like "I have already uploaded my primary personality code to the future cloud" would have added a futuristic twist and kept the character relevant in the later parts of the film.
As for the musical score, Hans Zimmer's involvement would have undoubtedly been a game-changer. His iconic compositions have elevated numerous films to new heights, and his contribution here could have added depth and emotion to key moments, enhancing the overall experience.
Now, onto the emotional aspect. You're spot on about the film being weighed down by excessive sentimentality. Striking the right balance between emotion and action is crucial in a science fiction film. A more subtle and nuanced approach to the emotional elements could have improved the pacing and overall impact.
In 2023, with the sci-fi genre evolving, revisiting this plot with a fresh perspective would be a welcome treat for fans like us. With the oversaturation of superhero movies from the Marvel Universe, it's become challenging to follow intricate character arcs and interconnected storylines. A standalone, thought-provoking science fiction film could offer a breath of fresh air and engage viewers on a different level.
In summary, this movie had immense potential with the right casting, innovative storytelling choices, a top-tier composer like Hans Zimmer, and a careful balance of emotion and action. It's high time for a reimagining of this concept in today's sci-fi landscape, offering something unique and exciting for fans who crave a break from the superhero frenzy.

Schlock it may be, but this movie embodies two of my favorite genres...time travel and aircraft accident investigation. Also thanks for clarifying Varley's reason for expanding his short story Air Raid (published under a pseudonym) into the novel Millennium. Loved the movie when it came out and have the DVD on my shelf.

I have a fondness for this movie. My first experience with it was coming across the paperback novelization by John Varley in 1989. I was intrigued by the cover blurb, which made the claim “Now a major motion picture” or something like that. After reading the book, I began to look high and low for evidence of that motion picture, because I really wanted to see it. Back then we didn’t have Google or the internet, so I was kind of limited in my research and just could not find any documentation or proof that such a movie existed.
Then one day a few weeks later I was watching regular broadcast TV, and a commercial came on. It was a movie trailer for…wait for it… Millennium! Apparently, the movie had not even been released yet. So I was giddy with anxious desire for the theatrical release which eventually hit my local theater.
I was not really disappointed after seeing the movie. The otherwise sketchy or disjointed plot points made sense to me because I’d already read the book. I admit they could have done a better job on the visual of Sherman the robot. And some of the “future” technology looked a bit wonky, but the story was presented well. They did make a few changes from the novel to the screen. Instead of 60,000 years in the future, it was only 1,000. Also, Arnold Mayer did not die in the book (as he did in the movie), but rather came along with Bill and Louise into the future.
All in all, I added this movie to my collection of time travel films, along with Peggy Sue Got Married, Somewhere in Time, and Time After Time.

I've been a fan of John Varley's work since the Gaea trilogy, and it's a shame that his screenplay wasn't fully realised - but "Millennium" is a darn good film for all of it's perceived flaws.
Another film that I like is "The Clan of the Cave Bear" (1986) based on Jean M Auel's novel

I remember reading about this movie and looking at pics for it in Starlog magazine. Might have been the issue that featured the first look at Batman. I thought the premise was enticing and I liked the set designs. I eventually saw it on cable. Didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either. It was one of those I’d watch if nothing else was on.

You'd like the book. Admittedly, it's NOT quite to the caliber of "Dinosaur Beach", but it does clean up the plot and eliminates for the most part, those pesky "timequakes". At the same time though, it's a FAR darker story.

My birthday isn't too far away, so 'Paradox' sounds like a nice little treat for myself. I've been learning Spanish, so a return to the mother tongue will be welcome. I did see 'Millennium' on VHS way back when, although I could only remember a few scenes, until your review. Michael Anderson is a kind of semi-documentary style director ('The Dam Busters' being the prime example). He's a solid, experienced director, but I never felt he was suitable for SF, due to being capable rather than inventive. I'm split on 'The Martian Chronicles' having re-watched it a few years ago. It's both dull and evocative at the same time. Although I really like the cast and the music. I agree that Kristofferson was a good choice. This might have been better as a TV mini-series though. The concept and the way it is treated seem more in keeping with an enjoyable few hours in front of a TV.

I have a ridiculous love for this movie, much of which is based, as another comment has mentioned, on the weird look. My preferred dystopias tend to be from the 70s, but even there I can't recall seeing elders in test tubes in various states of degeneration. Is there any record of John Varley's reaction to it?
Trapped by a malevolent intelligence of our own making? Interesting. I am hoping that it's a personal fav, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, but the hint could easily work for several other movies as well.

FWIW, Millennium is not one of Varley's best works, although the ending is kinda supposed to be a mess. He is following the lead of other writers like Bester and Niven who deliberateky trash the logic of time travel as a plot device, although Varkey doesn't do it as well as they did and a deconstruction of his central plot device wasn't really a great fit for the noirish dystopic disaster-avoidance story he'd been writing until then. I'll be honest, I'm not really a fan of the novel (although the earlier short story was pretty good), but it does make you think a bit. Varley would get into similar themes with Steel Beach, but without the time travek aspects, and it worked a lot better.

Good luck with your novel "Paradox" and your other projects. Having the leading man with a much younger love interest was normal in 20th century films. Considering the two characters it made sense. She was gorgeous andcompared to the men in her time, he was handsome. Granted, there were the rescued passengers, but she probably didn't have much interface with them.

Never saw, but now won't shut it off if it comes on some cable channel. But I am not afraid of watching cheesy sci-fi movies. I finally saw Logan's Run recently from start to finish when it was on TMC. Even understanding sci-fi at the time (a relative kid who grew up on Star Trek TOS when it first aired) I still think it is schlocky and silly a sort of Barbarella without the sense of humor.
