- Welcome to Part 1 of my Sicilian island series. If you've ever dreamed of travelling to Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Lipari or Sicily during the summer, this first episode should give you some idea of the beauty, the volcano, the history, the ties to the golden era of Italian cinema, the Italian food and the local way of life. As you know, I am a great lover of vintage cinema and the love story of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini is one of my favourites. Most of the content where I translate was originally made for TV because American and Canadian networks won’t accept shows with subtitles - they tell me their audiences won’t read them. I believe Netflix also stated 70% of their audience will turn off a show unless it’s dubbed rather than subtitled.

Kylie Flavell that’s a really sad thing, people are getting more and more lazy :( personally, i’d prefer to watch a show with the original audio and just read the translations cuz you’re learning as well. One thing I admire about your videos is your use of inductive visual language. You contextualize the locale in layer after lusciously beautiful layer as if you were baking a mille feuille. I remeber sailing by stromboli. Quite a lot of work the next morning cleaning the ashes off. It was beautiful seeing the plumes of lava spewing in the night.

I loved this! I've always loved Italian culture and dreamed of going to Italy one day. A few months ago I decided to learn Italian and go visit Italy within the next year (post CV-19 of course). When I finally get to visit I want a truly immersive experience beyond doing the usual tourist activities. I want to speak with Italians in their language and learn about their country from them. I've watched so many travel vlogs of Italy that I find them boring since they offer little in terms of culture. Your channel is exactly what I was looking for. Also, your Italian is excellent. Your perspective, that gravitates towards in-depth intimate authentic conversations, is part of what cinematic storytelling seem to have lost, to increased escapism from it. You provide escapism to reality, through aesthetics of the mundane. The encounters and connections between people - relatable and recognisable as the randomness that frames life - that resonates. As pivotal events in life can be due to random encounters, that lead us onto a new path of choices.

Kylie thank you again for another wonderful video! I was living in the countryside in Umbria the past year but sadly had to return home to the US during the quarantine. While in quarantine I had a back injury that left me unable to walk for over a month. I spent so much of that time watching your videos and dreaming to return. While I love film, my talents have always lied in writing. And with only a few photos, my visual memory of Italy felt like a passing dream. I'd watch your channel to remind myself and remember the beauty of my former life.
Fast forward... I was lucky enough to be granted a student visa to the UK for my master's in Edinburgh. Taking advantage of the online method of learning and it's flexible nature, I'll be flying back to Italy next week and sailing to the island of Ponza. Watching your fantastic shots of the sea gives me feelings of butterflies in my stomach! My mouth is watering to return. I felt so depressed when I left Italy, I spent time on your channel in some sort of desperation to manifest Italy again in my future. You were my good luck charm, grazie!

Just beautiful . Stromboli is breathtaking.
My first trip to Stromboli was a day trip from Lipari ,exploring the island during the day and being treated to some local Malvasia at night while drifting in a small boat watching the majestic eruptions and her power . A memory I will never forget !
