- Did you know a marlin is not a swordfish and a swordfish is not a billfish? Though these animals look similar, they aren't classified in the same family! Swordfish have some key differences that set them apart from other billfish (who are also commonly known as marlins). Of course, it wouldn't be easy to confuse the two if there weren't also some similarities between these two iconic fish groups!
Scientific Name:
marlin/billfish: Family - Istiophoridae
swordfish: Family - Xiphiidae
Range: worldwide marine waters except polar regions
Size: up to 1,500 pounds (680kg)
Diet: mostly fish
Lifespan: 10+ years (though may not live this long)

fun fact: marlin and swordfish eat the same food and thats why marlin kill young swordfish
