  • Oarfish are the longest known bony fish. Though they don't bet the ocean sunfish in weight, these long bois can reach more than 26 feet (8m) in length. They also don't mind losing parts of their rear ends if the need arises. These fish are generally considered rare because they aren't typically seen. Oarfish live in deep water and most individuals that are observed have been washed up on beaches. These fish have fancy dorsal rays that stick out far above their heads and even come with their own "oars"!
    Scientific Name: Family - Regalecidae
    Range: oceans around the world
    Size: potentially longer than 26 feet (8m)
    Diet: planktonic animals (oarfish are filter feeders)
    Lifespan: unknown

    Coolest oarfish I've ever seen was one in the back of the NHM's collection in London. It was probably a five, six meter animal preserved in a jar about 1m tall, accordioned over. He didn't look happy about his situation!

    The bigger oarfish spend most of their time in the twilight part of the sea where there is very little light. All I got as to why they go to the surface is, “they have been known to come to the surface at night, apparently attracted by the lights of the boats.”

    Had no clue these existed until I caught one in Animal Crossing. The diagonal way it swims in its tank makes so much sense now.

    I caught one of these in Animal Crossing New Horizons and Blathers speculated it may be the origin of dragon and sea serpent myths.

    Really great! I love your videos! I’ll have to go look for more facts, but I’m wondering what their average size is? Even though they can get so long, what is the typical length? They are super cool!!

    • @AnimalFactFiles
      @AnimalFactFiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) is the one that can get so long. Other species still get big, though. Maybe like ten feet (3m)? So maybe an average would be at least that? Sometimes it's hard to say, especially since these guys don't always have a rear end. ;)

      A lot of scientists think that sea-monster myths originated from sailors seeing Oarfish.

    • @hobomike6935
      @hobomike6935 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Plausible. It really is a "monster" sized fish, moves like a "ribbon" through the water, and fits the description of a "sea serpent" in every way.
      I could see someone from ancient times spotting one, trying to describe it to other people when he gets back to shore, and being laughed out of the tavern because of how ludicrous it sounds. I hadn't even heard of this fish until a few years ago because of how rarely they go to the upper layers of the ocean.

    I like them got I got a fear of them the other day where I had a dream I was fishing in animal crossing and the shadow became bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and the it lifted its head up and it was a giant sea serpent and then a kraken rose out of the water and scared me..-I have a weird imagination.

    The fishermen should have released it after they caught it. It will not survive without the deep sea pressure.
