My dad died of dementia 6 weeks ago and everything about this song speaks to me. I was with him almost every day the last 3 years and at the end. This song is a perfect account of the end of my dad's life and my experience with him. The dementia caused him to see a lot of things that weren't there, sometimes scary things, and I would play along and tell him I'd chased the things he was seeing away, and he would be happy and calm down. I chased the monsters away, as he did for me when I was a kid too scared to go to sleep.

Sickness, memory issues, fears of the unknown.. all the monsters hiding in the closet that are now the adult child's turn to chase away and take care of everything.. leaving the light on, to chase away all the fears.. rest easy, it's my turn now. I love the pat on the arm by the father to the sons arm.. That father still reassuring the son who's emotional singing the song.
