Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (Genesis) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Sega's 1993 license-based platformer for the Sega Genesis, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Sega's games based on Home Alone were quite good, and it seemed reasonable to expect a similar level of quality from the sequel.
I, for one, was pretty disappointed by it. I do think that it's the best Home Alone 2 game overall, but when you look at the competition - primarily the games on the Nintendo platforms - I think you'll agree that there wasn't much competition.
It's not particularly bad - not at all - but compared to Sega's earlier Home Alone games, it falls a bit flat. The graphics are fairly good in spite of the massive amounts of dithering, and the animations look nice - I'm not sure if it was rotoscoped, but the style and relative fluidity certainly makes me think it might have been. The sound holds itself together well enough with some good music (except that first stage, yuck), and the grunt and scream effects can be pretty entertaining.
My biggest gripe I have with it is over the gameplay. It's as by-the-numbers as platforming can get. Whereas HA1 gave you something resembling a platformer/strategy/tower defense-hybrid game, HA2 plays things far more safe, and the experience overall suffers for it. For the most part you're running in a straight line or through a maze while jumping on tree limbs/shelves, collecting items, and at the end of each stage fighting the Wet-turned-Sticky Bandits. (Gross. Did they forget to wash their hands after their alone time?)
There's really no variety, and it's entirely too easy to run through the whole game on autopilot. Being the sequel to an innovative and thoroughly enjoyable first game doesn't do it any favors.
Still, there are plenty of worse games out there, particularly if you are looking for Christmas games. Back in the day, this was worth a rental. Now, I'd say if you see it for $5, go for it. You'll have some mindless fun, and it's easily worth that much. If it's $20, you'd probably be better off picking something else.
(The ending scene is pretty cool though!)
And finally, my long run of Home Alone videos comes to an end with this playthrough, for now at least. Hope you enjoyed them, and the holidays overall!

2:53 Oh man, I remember that scene from the movie where Kevin is stuck in a weird world of luggages and having weird tunnels that are a size of a human and Kevin has to maneuver his way out, loved it.
My guess is the level designers mistook
Home Alone 2 for Die Hard 2. Both are some of the best Christmas movies after all, can't blame them.
@@thecubeman381 If only you could stab someone in the eye with an ice spike broken off of the roof of a church! 😆
Does anyone know where Marv is in the first level???
Thr bird lady is a boss?
@@nicholasmedovich6729Marv is not in the first level
Here we go with the last Home Alone upload for the time being. Everybody be safe and have fun with your new year's celebrations! 🍾
When this was released it got the "worst movie to game" award by EGM. Honestly there were much worse games outhere.
@@Invidente7 Oh yeah, so many worse than this.
Happy New Year, NintendoComplete! Here's looking forward to more fun gaming stuff in 2022.
@@NintendoComplete Was the third movie really that bad?
I give you tons of credit for playing this all the way through. Frustrating and never lived up to the goodness of the first one on Genesis
Your Chanel has become my first source to find new games from the 8 and 16 bit era. I really like your small rewiews in the description and you are good to point out the good things about them. As many of the games you are covering bearly has no mention at all anywhere ele, your videos and video desription is an exelent guide to my games collection.
That's really cool of you to say so. Thanks!
Happy New Year, NintendoComplete
And I'm not gonna lie, the thumbnail for this felt like it was staring at my soul
In my opinion this was the best version of Home Alone and very well done graphics!
Graphics are actually terrible compared to the first one.
@@JaggedMercenary First game looked terrible. Calling the levels "plain" would be an understatement. And the character animation was incredibly stiff.
At least the levels in this game sport a more varied look and have more detail. Character animations have been improved here, too.
@@Dorian_Scott On Super Nes, yep. But on Megadrive, it looked much better.
Home Alone on Genesis looked perfect, and it wasn’t some generic, obnoxious, half-baked side-scroller with terrible music.
I would say this version was reimagined.
With a decent chiptune cover of Darlene Love's "All Alone on Christmas".
The only Home Alone game that is worth playing. The character animation in this is really nice. Look at that run cycle!
You're crazy. The first one was just as good
@@Greg400 damn right I played the holy hell out of both Sega versions never cared for the nes or snes ones
No, the first Home Alone game for the Genesis is the only one worth playing. This one is just weird. Why does it have Kevin attacking innocent people and cats? At least the first one had him just dealing with Harry and Marv.
@@HolyRomanEmperor90 yea i hate that they had him attacking cats...but its because they would hit him along with everyone else in the damn city...i think if you added the ninjas or other criminals instead and lead up to marv and harry as the end level bosses with heighten difficulty it would have made a better experience
I like this game very much
Pretty nice animation especially considering it's only a 4-Mb cart. I have a soft spot for alot of Sega of America work. Good enough game could have mailed it in with a far worse effort. Also don't mind the dithering and some of the music is good. 3:11 and 25:52 👍
Seems like they used the Tale Spin engine with some slight improvements.
I myself have a soft spot for S.T.I.'s stuff as well as games like these. Two of the most creative games of all-time, to me, are _Comix Zone_ and _The Ooze_ . Hard as nails, but they're so much fun to play and you really feel like you want to continue trying to get further and further in them, you know?
First of all, kudos to your dedication. I have watched some of your walkthroughs and felt amazed at the number of games you've been through to provide content. Truly amazing.
Second and unrelated, there's a NES game i wanted to ask about that i haven't seen in your list but you might know, since i want to play it on emulator for the old days' sake but can't remember its name. It's a side scrolling shoot'em up featuring a ship that can also turn into a mecha and fight on ground punching stuff. As far as i remember the bosses looked like giant floating cities/domes you defeated by shooting blocks underneath said dome. I haven't been able to find it so far.
Wether you know it or not, thanks for the content and keep it up! Games like these should be remembered for their value as pioneers in an industry spamming through (and joining) entire generations.
Well, it's no masterpiece, but I enjoy the high energy of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York for the Sega Genesis. Despite how ugly some of the graphics are (look at Harry and Marv's faces on the bottom right corner! Eeugh!!), the animation on Kevin himself is pretty good, and it's a relatively safe, inoffensive, fast-moving platformer that I'm sure was an enjoyable Holiday rental. *Happy New Year,* everyone!!
You change your pfp way too often, I gotta be honest.
Might not be as good as the first Home Alone game for the Genesis but it's still really fun and worth playing. There are no doubts whatsoever. Sega's Home Alone games will always be the best ones!
a real feather in the Genesis' cap
The best home alone 2 game ever
love that picture at the end credits! I could use that as my email greetings to one of my family and friends!
Omg this brings back so many memories!
Ahh the old days😎😎😎
At least no floating keys, vacuums and briefcases attacking you. That was so stupid in the other versions
"Sega turned me into a f**kin' a**hole!"
- Macaulay Culkin
As i remember it, the game was tedious as hell, most frustrating part was enemies. How come e.g. regular bystanders by any possibility would turn hostile towards a kiddo? Anyway, it left mostly good memories after all, maybe reason we all were kids and this was Home Alone game :)
Edit:
Hell, looking at the SNES version I think I should consider myself lucky, it's a total fustercluck
Played this one on emulator in my teenage years. Wasn't bad for what it was. Glad they retained the weapon crafting element to some extent
Great playthrough my friend, 2 Home Alone movies are my favorites.
reminds me of my childhood...
This version was sooooooooo fun! Very smooth/clean gameplay!
EEYOW!
Harry has fall to pieces 😂
Strange that the hotel is omitted in this one
childhood memories😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Fun fact: the presents are actually going to be in Conker’s Pocket Tales, but all of them were scrapped. (Not counting the blue one)
Damn, cop's death animations are so funny and weird, and this sound!
Very Amazing!
Once again there's master system sounds again
In the game!
Pure nostalgia
you are so right
So great👍
I WATCHED HOME ALONE ON A VHS AND PLAYED THIS GAME
I played this videogame.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
It's just become January 1st where I live. Happy new year!

Not saying one or the other is better necessarily but I never understood why the SNES and Sega Genesis versions of games were so different as in different levels, weapons, enemies, etc.
Different developers. The versions on Nintendo were all developed by Imagineering (the same people who did the NES Simpsons games) and came out around the same time the movie did. Sega themselves developed this one, and it came out a year later.
"Alright fellas, what kind of art direction are we gonna go with?" "Pure shit, with nasty dithering"
Are you sure you weren't looking at the NES "Home Alone 1"?
Nah, that one was "eye-searing pastel nightmare with dead, dead eyes".
@@YukaTakeuchiFan I'd still much rather look at this.
I am amazed how bad the color is in this game, it looks 4 bit
@@MrWolfTickets Master System "Home Alone 1" must be even worse, then.
Rented this game from a video store back in the '90s. That flying punchy thing still gives me anxiety. 🤦♂️
Love Kevin McCalister
After "My family's in Florida and I'm in New York" this game was all downhill.
Where’s Marv in level 1
He's gone to far! McAllister those people are innocent!
are strangers trying to molest home alone in the airport?
Wow
Macaulay Culkin and AVGN hated this game
Because they didn't know how to play it
@@flpideas1 they just complained about Kevin being attacked by people in every level.
Prefiero la primera parte
😢😭🥺
Why would anyone want to watch a walkthrough on any old NES game that that doesn’t give trophies or achievements maybe when they remake home alone 2 on PS4 or xbox It’ll be worth to watch

Watching this and watching SNES version... oh boy.. SNES version is such a pile of turd on many levels.
Only few strange levels that never been a stage in the film. Plus "Mom's red bag" - when in film it was "Dad's bag" and he had it with him on board, not in baggage! LOL
This game is highly inaccurate.
Harry an marv working with the hotel
People?
The bird woman is evil?
Lol, what are you talking about, you're describing a different game
Deviates way too far from the movie
Harry and marv working with
The hotel folk?
The bird lady is evil?
Wtf that never in the movie.
Not really

So just like the film: uninspired and dull, but not without it's merits.
The movies awesome shut up
