Don't let the sharp learning curve scare you away too quickly - once you learn the game and get some practice, it really is an excellent fighter. And extremely violent, if you like that kind of thing. I do.
Another problem is the CPU can get away with cheating. The ying-yang symbol basically shows how many times you can use special attacks, but the CPU opponent can use them despite depleting it.
The CPU in this game is so damn cheap even with practice. I remember running circles with people at the local funcoland with Larcen,Xavier,Rax and Trident, but the CPU still pummels me to this day due to their over excessive blocking! take away the blocking and the CPU would die instantly!
Good game but the difficulty is through the roof. The Eternal Champion marathon fight at the end is probably in my Top 10 most unfair gaming moments lol.
This game has some of the best spritework I have seen in a Mega Drive/Genesis game. They're so large (with some going up to 128 pixels high) and are animated so well with tons of character shown in them.
Upon observation of the sound channels when running this game, I found that the helicopter sound effect at around 7:15 is FM. American devs managed to get a literal helicopter sound out of the Genesis without it sounding like farts.
It does with those brutalities & fatalities u don’t see in mortal kombat.. that shit creeps up on u.. and horrifying way... which makes them game special..
i think this is one of the hardest fighters ever. love the character Larcen--probably one of the coolest characters in any fighting game. Always played as him. I don't know how you master these games!. I gave up on this one years ago.

I used to borrow this game from the video rental store just so I could listen to the music and enjoy the graphics. My Dad never asked any questions because he heard the music playing from my room and just assumed I was playing it seriously so he wasn't wasting his money.
@@evansusmc It's pretty mediocre; that's why no one talks about it these days. All it really has going for it are the great graphics. Street Fighter 2 is way better, and it came out over 2 years earlier.

They all have a move or two that is very useful, high priority, high mobility or both which takes no spirit. Larcens wheel kick, Shadows double jump and dive kick. Rax's "throw" with hard kick, which is nutso brutal and can stun allowing you to do it again. Tridents ground blade roll back to bait and retreat while charging a move. Blade's trademark 'lightning' dive with hard kick in the air, letting you jump back away, pressing it as a surprise sudden front dive. Xavier's standing hard punch? That tosses his cane out a very long range as a huge wheel, Slashes quick hard flip kick and absurdly dominant down strike with his club. Once you realize you can charge moves after jumping in (think charge characters in SF series E Honda / Blanca) you jump in with many champions and immediately pull away to charge, work a little poke to soften them and open up. Most moves in this are multi button, a button and a direction or a charge. I personally have a hard time picking a favorite. I love Larcen and Rax but I love Shadow and Midnight's whole design and feel so much. What I think makes this game great is, the characters are not stylized by the martial art they know (which can be amazing don't get me wrong) but they are styilized by being themselves.... A unique concept. They are not just Samurai or karate. The only character that even sort falls into this cliche is Jetta and even she is a hyper fast acrobat that knows the very obscure pencak silat and thows a boomerang.... and you have the obscure like Slash's fight style .... "PAIN" lol Then you assume it will be a cheese fest and unbalanced, but the spirit meter helps a ton there. The crazy thing also is, not every champion has a weapon. While developers can make a hard punch the same damage as a staff strike what they can't fuge on is the range so all sorts of reach. Somehow a Jeet kun do vampire from Vietnam era can fight a caveman with a club or a cyborg with energy weapon with his fists and his 'free' move that brutal gap closing tornado kick. Somehow it remains fairly balanced. And finally why would a 1920 gangster fight an Atlantian or a caveman? The story makes that work as well. just played this game again after i like 15 years. i completely forgot about it until my friend bought a sega genesis mini and this game was there. so much memories came back to me when i played it. This is the why im here :)
I used to have a friend who insisted on playing the Atlantean with unlimited chi. One fireball would stun you, and then he'd be able to hit you with a series of 3 buzz saw attacks. So cheesy. Then somehow he stopped having fun playing the game when I got good enough to beat him regularly despite it.
The Sega consoles had several 1st party classics during the 8-bit & 16-bit generation, and for that reason, Sega has always been one of my favorite game developers!

I loved this game on the Genesis!! Then there was this one track in the Sound Options that me and my homies would freestyle to. Then later on Bone Thugs N Harmony would use that beat for the Eternal song on the E.1999 album! Ahh, the memories!!
I'm surprised how good the music was. It's not over-composed; it leaves a lot of room for the imagination, but still has a lot of character. I think these songs would sound great remade with modern tools.
When my siblings and I were gifted a Sega Genesis, back in the early 90s, the box came with a poster showing screen caps from different games and on the back there is a poster of this game. Surprised this franchise is getting revived in film. Could this mean we'll get a new Eternal Champions game as well?
Shadow was my fave as a kid.
I loved this game on the Genesis!! Then there was this one track in the Sound Options that me and my homies would freestyle to. Then later on Bone Thugs N Harmony would use that beat for the Eternal song on the E.1999 album! Ahh, the memories!!
I remember me and my siblings grew up on this game! Brings back sooooo many awesome memories! I miss this playing game❤️🥹😁💪
Last boss is like geese Howard with ghost fire soul 👺
I remember this game loved it, bring back lots of good memories.
I'm surprised how good the music was. It's not over-composed; it leaves a lot of room for the imagination, but still has a lot of character. I think these songs would sound great remade with modern tools.
Sick playthrough bro. That is not easy.
Thanks! And yeah, the AI in this game is wickedly unfair sometimes
just played this yesterday still crazy game
I LOVED this game when I was a kid! I would spend hours beating the game with every character to see there story. Awesome to find this on TH-cam! 👍
This is awesome! I love this game! Never forgotten.
When my siblings and I were gifted a Sega Genesis, back in the early 90s, the box came with a poster showing screen caps from different games and on the back there is a poster of this game. I couldn't wait to play it, I was pumped by the description and by how badass the poster looked hanged on our bedroom door (I still have it). We finally rented it to play with my siblings and were so disappointed lol
Played this for many hours, daily back in the day.
