  • Join us for a cautionary tale of a kitemare in Bonaire. Despite the allure of an offshore wind, I made a beginner mistake that would cost me dearly. Attempting a double backroll with my trusty Reedin kite, things quickly took a turn for the worse as I failed to execute the trick properly. In the unforgiving wind and waves, I found myself in a dangerous situation that I had not prepared for. This harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the importance of proper training and caution when engaging in extreme sports.
Despite the dire situation I found myself in during my kitemare in Bonaire, the tight-knit community of kitesurfers came together to save the day. With their expertise and quick thinking, they were able to rescue me from the treacherous offshore wind and bring me safely back to shore. This experience taught me the value of having a supportive community of like-minded individuals to rely on in times of need. In the end, I was grateful to be part of such an amazing community of people who share a passion for adventure and a commitment to safety.

learn to self rescue properly ...pulling yourself up the lines with loose lines is dangerous ....my first action with the kite falling like that , release the chicken loop onto safety, kite should untwist and partly fill with the wind and then slowly pull up your safety line to the bar and reconnect ,then relaunch ..the kite should spin out but you may have line twists which you can sort once back on the beach

@@Jochumvideos Hey mate, looks like high risk for bad injuries, I'm happy you are safe.
Do you know what you supposed to do next time in this situation?
      Here is my opinion:
As soon that you see your kite falling in front of you in the power zone, immediately use the Chicken Loop Quick Release, once the kite is stable on the water try to recover the Chicken Loop and restart your session, if for any reason you are not able to recover the CL, start with Self Rescue procedure.
If you are not sure how to recover the CL or how to perform safely Self Rescue, you can find those episodes on my channel … on my PATREON is an episode how to practice Self Rescue at home, which is available just for people who supports my work over PATREON, but if you are not able to support I will be happy to send you the link of the episode if you wish for it
      Stay safe and enjoy

@@Jochumvideos quite often yes...as the lines fall off the tip of the kite so the kite can catch the wind again...this may well mean twists but as long as the kite isnt inside out or bow tied then it can be relaunched. Also you'd need to release it to self rescue anyway so release the chicken loop and see what the kite does ..if its not looking good , start the self rescue procedure

There's always a day when you're going to have a really tough time in the water; the key is not to give up. I've lost count of the tangles in the lines, self-rescues, and boat rescues from the early days when I used to windsurf. It's all about pushing through and not letting those challenging moments define your love for the sport. Every difficult experience in the water teaches you something valuable, making you a stronger and more skilled water enthusiast.

It's dangerous to risk tangling yourself in the lines, possibly life threatening if not wearing a knive especially in offshore winds.

Had a very complicated rescue there as well, at sunset, strong wind, and took me 20 minutes at least. didnt panic much thou - great pro kiters there. got tangled with another kiter, we had to detach all lines from our kites. roll the lines on the bars, give the boards to the pros, I even had to cut one bridle of my kite cause the other kiter rolled it onto his bar together with his lines.. they took the inflated kites onshore as well, the other guy was 100 kg they brought him flippers so he can swim back, I monkey rode on the back of one pro kiter back to the shore. they were very supportive. amazing. it was at the corona time on top of it. no kite schools, no boats to call. you cant even swim against the wind if you are 500 meters down.

Yeah for sure others being around is needed for personal safety. I never tried kites, but did a lot of windsurfing. I recall being out at Sotavento one afternoon on a two week trip there in July 1989 I think it was. I had been out for a couple of hours in the morning, had lunch and had been back out for another couple of hours. I crashed during an outside jibe at the end of a long upwind leg. When I tried to waterstart I got cramp up my quads as I tried to lift onto the board, but then as I tried to pull out with my hamstrings I got locked up with double cramp in both legs, so hamstrings and quads 🙂 Needless to say I couldn't get out of the water at that point. I had to sit there in the water and wait for about 10 mins for my blood to get some energy back into my legs I guess. During that time two other sailers stopped to ask if I was OK, cause with the really strong offshore wind there its not good if your kit fails or like me you go for far too long, or you get an injury etc. Was really good of them to stop and ask, and shows the community vibe of these sports. I was up and away again in 10 mins probably (but it did seem longer) and stopped for the day once I made the beach. Was a little bit cautionary for sure about getting carried away with how good the sailing is. You can drift a long way in a short time with 30 knots plus wind offshore. Was back in the water the next morning for more of the same 🙂

You can clearly see in the video that the bar has not slid forward at the saftey.
So either you didn't use the quick release or there wasn't enough force on the lines so the bar didn't slide forward. Then you would have had to help by pulling hard on the flagline. 0:50

It's hard to tell since I wasn't the one in the water, but was there a reason you let go of the board?
I'm also curious what your process was for deciding to ditch the bar and climb the center lines? Was it because you didn't feel you could untwist the lines to allow for the regular quick release to work?

The best advice I can give is probably a little different self rescue method. Instead of pulling the lines to retrieve the kite . Try this , if you still have your board on hand , pull the leash release off the harness and tie your best knot to either the foot strap of the board or to the boot . Now with the lines not rapped around your hand let the board go left to the other side of the window while you make your way down the lines in the opposite wind window slowly pulling the kite in . Once at the kite flip it over it and sit on the leading edge and slowly pull you board and bar and lines back to you . Don’t let the lines get rapped around anything . Once you retrieve them Hook the leash with the board attach back to your harness , then start rapping your lines . By doing this it it will keep your lines from being a total bird nest , then grab that wing tip to the direction of the beach and sail in sitting on your kite . Taught many people this method , and I can’t tell you how many are happy I’ve drilled that method of self rescue . Deep water plays a big factor in panic and using the kite to float make you more visible to others , hope I gave a clear picture of this method for youz .

@@Jochumvideos that sounds a bit odd to buy a rescue just for myself. it's not an option. i was wondering if there was some lifeguard on duty constantly which helps everyone whenever it's needed. as of swimming back - it depends on a wind strength. sometimes you can't swim back with attached kite and the only option is to say bye-bye to the kite if you want to get your ass back to the beach. i just come into a conclusion that people just pray for luck and hope for the fact that it's a crowdy place and the chance of getting dissolved in the horizon is very low

    • @nickmedukha
      @nickmedukha ปีที่แล้ว +3

It depends on the wind direction. I usually kite when its at least at some degree on-shore or side-on-shore. In this case you are able to get back to the beach in almost any scenario. Buying rescue is very common, and if the rescue boat was like 15 eur per one rescue (i might be wrong with numbers), its sounds good to me, cause in deep water and offshore, its very likely that if things go wrong, you just let your kite and board go and try swim to the beach, which will cost you much more than 15 eur. But as always, you can skip the off-shore days, or drive to another spot where its crosswind or on-shore
