to be fair to danny green he shoots nothing like that in game he jumps a lot more, and super far forward. I think he intentionally stunts his jump in the contest to save time
Just watched a video from 3 years ago where Coach said that Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and D'angelo Russel will be a Lakers' big 3 for years to come
I got the same left thumb problem when I was still playing basketball. My coach asked me to fix it but I couldn't. But it's already 5years ago, I wish this video come out at least 5 years earlier. That also implies why players improve a lot in shooting nowadays. Good video!
These aren't even close to their normal shot forms. Danny Green even clearly said he modified his shot to be faster and tighter to get a better rhythm going since this is entirely different from catching and shooting.
Something that really Helped me go from being a terrible shooter to shooting over 50% from 3 back in the day is something that Joe Harris does. What I found to be EXTREMELY important for myself. Notice, how Harris doesn't use is left hand to push the ball into his right hand, most players do this, and your shooting hand has to rotate underneath the ball then shoot. what he does, and I found it helped me a lot is pushing the ball on top of your right hand so it's vertical pressure( in line with your shooting wrist and elbow), and not horizontal pressure, and you'll get insane accuracy from this because it prevents your shooting hand from making this very common elliptical motion to get underneath the ball, and instead allows you to sort of flip your hand straight through the ball rather than rotate underneath. I had to adapt this strategy because I'm only 5'8" and I don't have gigantic hands to totally control the ball during my shot, which led me to this style. The key to it, is doing it quickly, you want a quick thrust into your shooting hand from your off hand, It will feel slightly uncomfortable at first but the accuracy is un-deniable. It's a push into your shooting hand vertically, it's important that your off hand does the work to start the shot, for instance most players sort of push with their shooting hand into the ball while sort of just applying stationary pressure with their off hand, The dramatic result of this is lonzo, and devin booker style shots, Gary Harris does the opposite he pushes the ball with his left hand into his right which doesn't swing to the sides, it's locked in and it's only job is to launch the ball straight out not move with it. It's important to do it with quickness or else you'll wind up with a hickup or a shot similar to many females where it's resting in one spot with no momentum. Just remember move the ball over to the shooting angle with your off hand, and apply pressure straight into your shooting elbow and as you apply this pressure the ball should never stop as the pressure is straight on the the shooting elbow rise up and drain a super accurate shot. It's really easy, and it works really fast. TRY IT! lol.
I didn't think Joe Harris had a lot of thumb influence. He barely contracts his thumb. Looked more like his off ball hand tried to rotate with the ball as he shoots (5:33). All in all very good vid.
This is why I love you coach!!! Interesting that ball grip position isn't a thing amongst the best... no shuffling in the hands off a pass... an underrated ability in my opinion. It's much easier to shoot a basketball when the lines are horizontal for me... so I shuffle it.
Actually he had his legs bent already, what he does is notice he’s leaning really far forward in the beginning of his shot, when the ball is still low. His head is above his toes, when he brings the ball up he actually doesn’t bend any further down, he just leans back. And since he was so far forward when he leans back he regains his balance and is vertically straight. While he’s leaning back he brings the ball up, while leaning back, and brings his heels off the ground. Then when the ball reaches its set point, he’s vertically straight, his heels are off the ground, and legs are bent, then he jumps. This gives him the most power and timing when shooting the ball.
Danny Green is not “using his arms to get power because he jumps so little” - he doesn’t even extend his arms! He times his little jump to get a lot of energy transfer through the flick on the ball- it’s surprising how little force is required to get power if timing is on. It would be interesting to compare Spurs vs Heat era Green jumper with this one that, I agree , looks very contracted and suboptimal. Also please do this type of comparison for the best, medium and worst free throw shooters. 👍🏽
The art of competition korver is a little different, he sways too much forward - relying too much on his leg- that caused his 3pt made-and percentage going down as he aged.
In the previous video, you stated that it was detrimental to start lifting the ball through the shooting motion before the leg dip is finished, but stephen curry does it and it helps him a lot in speed, any thoughts? How do you differentiate between which helps and which doesnt doesnt?
I find myself hitting wide open threes best when I try to mimic as robotic shooting motion as I can where my legs are straight to the basket and they dont rotate in the air on come closer to each other
missippe blazegaming Thats not entirely true. If you need a thumb flick and your fine with it stick with it. If not then switch to no thumb flick. Curry is a thumb flicker and he’s the greatest shooter we’ve ever seen.
hey coach, do you think that eye dominance affects shooting the basketball? and how would you help a guy who is cross-dominant? (shoots right handed, but left eye dominant or left handed, but right eye dominant)
all this time i was thinking that my off-hand thumb was a big mistake. i can shoot calmly now after seeing how f.. up some of those shooting forms are :D!
I am confused... in the first part he said that bringing the arms up while still bending the knees doesn't let you use the whole power of your legs (Middleton). On the other hand he mentions the same thing with Joe Harris, but says that he relies heavily on his legs. What did I miss? Or does that just mean that he just has to work harder through his legs?
Yeah I think he slipped up. A two motion shot requires more power from the upper body as you are already in the air when you release it. Players like Curry and Lillard get more power from their legs as the jump to propel their shot forward that’s why they have so much range. It’s a common misconception that jumping higher gives more power when actually the exact opposite is true.
@@afrosamurai125 Thank you! And another thank you for pointing the air thing out; I checked and Steph really releases it immediatly after leaving the floor in comparison to Harris, who is way more up!
@@afrosamurai125 great point. Players like Derozan and Aldridge have 2 motion shots allowing them to succeed in the mid range but are not great 3pt shooters. They are able to shoot with the defender right in front of them without creating separation, whereas one motion shooters need a little space. Is a 1motion shot better than 2motion?
@@austinha5576 I'd stick with one motion, for one main very important reason, your legs will get tired, people with two motion shot's are making it more difficult on themselves late in the game. If you're a volume scorer one motion is the move. You get better range one motion, and less fatigue.

That’s the point coach nick is trying to make. That it’s not necessarily ideal to shoot with all 5 fingers facing the ceiling. Traditionally, the off hand thumb influence has been taught as bad and something to avoid. However, most of the best 3 point shooters in this contest and in history have had some off hand thumb influence. So teaching off hand thumb influence as being bad might not be correct.
coach I know you said the alignment of your shot can effect your shooting in the long term sense, one shooter I know who is consistent throughout his whole career doing this is KD, do you think its because hes almost 7 foot and already hard to guard or is it something else?
