You could have elaborated more on water deaths. How about characters that are aquatic in nature like Frogger for example can’t swim! He’s a frog 🐸! Frogs swim!
Not video games in particular, but superheroes in general having an inability to swim. I understand you gotta give them a weakness, but why is it so often swimming?! It's OK if the explanation makes sense, but oftentimes it's just an excuse for SOME sort of weakness.

That's an interesting point. I had never thought of it that way. I don't see why we can't have both though. Maybe achievements/trophies/kudos can only be earned without cheat codes?
I like achievements. They can add playability to a game and also keep a record about what you played and how much. They're also fun to compare with friends and have monthly races to score the most points. Dead Rising did them perfect, as unlocking achievements unlocked extra powerups like the mega buster in the game.
@@GameSack some arcade games on 360 only let you get achievements if you use the default setting and it even says so when you are in the menu changing them and some games mainly smash and kirby air ride give you unlock-able items or tracks or stuff when you do them
What a strange opinion. I’m not sure howcheat codes extend the life of a game. They usually just make things easier. As for achievements being for narcissism, I disagree. When done well, achieve,Mets extend the life of a game by giving more objectives than just “finish”.
I don’t see how the two are related. Achievements extend a game’s life and give a set stopping point. Cheat codes can either work or not work alongside them. Cheat codes have been replaced by microtransactions and paid DLC.
Constantly respawning enemies. And I don't mean the ones that are replaced when you re-enter an area, but the ones that even respawn when you're still in there...
I've always thought Star Fox on the SNES did a really good job with the damage beeper. It beeps at you WHEN YOU GET HIT to let you know you're in trouble, then shuts up. Perfect.

"Point of no return". Yeah, that one applies to quite a few games, come to think of it. Kudos to the devs that actually signal when this kind of thing is coming up, though.
I've got one. In a typical platformer you are given a lot of extra lives in earlier levels, so by the time you get to the last part of the game you have a healthy number of lives for when the levels get hard and you need them. Now, in a bunch of Super Nintendo platformers like Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and the entire Donkey Kong Country series, they had a save feature. Only problem was, if you were near the end of the game and had a ton of lives, then saved and quit, when you started again all the extra lives you collected would be gone and you'd have just four or five lives you started the game with, just when you actually started needing them.
I've been playing through FFX about once every couple years for the last 15+ years and I had NO idea the cutscenes were unskippable! My biggest gaming pet peeve is the handholding radio voice. So patronizing! But my second biggest gaming pet peeve is anything related to forced internet connections and monetary schemes.
From the same developers, it's Kingdom Hearts, coming at you with an especially painful memory of the Ansem-possessed Riku boss fight that, to add insult to injury, doesn't let you bring Donald and Goofy along because they're magically locked out by forcefields.
Just wanted to thank you guys for this wonderful show. I absolutely love Game Sack! It's one of the best shows on youtube. Keep them great videos a-comin' guys!
I didn’t think you were going to mention Zelda during the unnecessary annoying noise part, but you finally did in the end. It was the first game that came to my mind lol
One of my biggest pet peeves in gaming are "scripted loss" boss battles which give no indication of being such until after you've wasted a bunch of time and healing items trying to win a battle that you were never meant to win. An example of a scripted loss done right would be the first battle against Vile in Mega Man X; he has no lifebar like you would expect from a Mega Man game, and his attacks are so quick, powerful, and unavoidable that you can figure out fairly quickly that you never stood a chance of winning.
Top 3 pet peeves are all from the same genre - racing games: #1 Rubber banding - especially when you are racing perfectly and mess up once then you're in last #2 When you are in first place and you hardly get bumped on a turn and you go way off the road. But when you try to do it back to them you cannot even budge them and you still go off the road #3 Challenges that are impossible to finish i.e. get 20 seconds of airborne time in DIRT 5 when there are only a couple of jumps on the track that only give you 1 second of air time on each jump.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is terrible for that. Makes you go through a long tutorial of your powers with Luke Cage no matter how many times you've played the game.
Yeah I used to just skip through his crap talking to tv saying yep uh huh ok whatever. Then running around wondering wtf did he say i need to do? Uh oh
Yeah Otis sucked but at least the game was excellent other than him. DR 3 and 4 were just terrible I guess..I haven't even bothered to play them which is sad. I loved DR and DR 2-Off The Record.
The pixel perfect jumping section. Found: In any of a multitude of scrolling platfromers of the 80's and first half of the 90s. As you near the end of the game, you'll be used to jumping from the very edge of platforms so the developers will start to throw the pixel perfect ones into series of regular jumps that you have to complete in one go due to dropping or crumbling platforms or time pressure. At this point you'll probably have to restart the game from scratch since you'll have to use up lives to memorise the jumping patterns.
"Games as a service". Back in the day, you just released a game and it had to be at least serviceable or that was the only game you released. This concept of releasing incomplete games to be fixed later is ridiculous.
@@YadonTheCat I disagree. I would rather buy a "game of the year edition" (of course- not buying the unfinished original version) for 40-60 dollars than pay full AAA prices for unfinished bs.
One of mine is bad hitboxes. Even the best games do this! Like in Super Mario World, you can get inside most projectiles and enemies, and they won't damage you! And most games that do this are not consistent either. In Super Mario World, the fire spitting plants that spit 4 slowly falling fireballs, Mario/Luigi have to be in it to take damage. On the other hand, a Charging Chuck throwing baseballs, you touch it, you get hit. I like it when it is simple; if you got hit by it, you got hit by it, no matter what. That way, you know to trust that the objects presented are the what you should be avoiding.
You definitely hit the nail right on the head with the drops of water. Not that anyone doubted you were going to mention that again in this episode! ;) One pet peeve I have that no one else seems to share is circle shadows. Back in the early days of gaming, I understand that it wasn't possible to have dynamic shadows, so using a black circle to represent someone or something's shadow was fine (though really good developers went with custom-shaped shadows instead, so that even if they weren't dynamic, they at least corresponded to their casters!). But in 3D gaming in particular, I feel like there's no excuse to use black circles as shadows -- again, even if you can't quite harness enough processing power for dynamic shadows, at LEAST make them person-shaped if a person is casting them, bird-shaped if a bird is casting them, etc.! It's not that hard to draw a black outline of a thing! And honestly, even in some 2D games, it bugs me -- particularly in a lot of Capcom and Capcom-inspired fighters, where the shadows aren't just circular, they're MASSIVE and FLASHING. As if to draw your attention to them and say, hey, look, these shadows look NOTHING AT ALL like the people who are casting them! I know it's a minor gripe, but it definitely is something that's bugged me for many years whenever I encounter it. And I always applaud games that take the time to do shadows right -- back in the early PS2 era, I remember being super-impressed with Dark Cloud's shadow-rendering engine, and quite disappointed with Soul Reaver 2's.
Flickering shadows, especially common in 2D fighters, was just a way of faking partial transparency. Back in the day, it did the job on old screens and arcade machines.
Wouldn't a person-shaped shadow basically be an oval, anyway, since it's being cast straight down? Otherwise, though, I get it. Minor gripe, but it's hard to excuse anything from the PS2 onward, seeing as even some N64 games were doing proper shadows.
@@3dmarth A person-shaped shadow is never a perfect oval -- usually it'll at least be an oval with two smaller ovals juxtaposed on the ends for arms, which is something I've seen a couple times before and am totally OK with. But yes, it is a minor gripe indeed. Just always been something that bugged me.
@@Wyrdwad Interesting- I don't remember ever seeing that in a game before. Can't see that approach making much of a difference, though. The Zelda games on N64 took a very different approach to the same issue, come to think of it: one fake shadow for each leg.
New Game Sack!! Thanks for making my poop time fun! Bosses that teleport around, bosses that constantly summon minions and bosses that have 2nd and 3rd forms with full life bars.
And you have to defeat all forms of the boss without dying because there's no checkpoint after each form. And you probably have to watch a long unskippable custscene each time before you can fight the boss again.
Permanently missable good/unique items is JRPGs, usually a situation where there's a location that later ceases to be a location you can ever return to. If you get a second chance later I don't mind but easily permanent missable items bug me..if I miss them
One of my pet peeves is when there's no invincibility or anything, and thus enemies can just combo you into oblivion with you not being able to do a thing to avoid it. The Legend of Spyro series had that problem until the third game, which is pretty bad to see. It's a series that I want to get into, though I know not many people actually like it. I personally enjoyed A New Beginning, aside from getting comboed to death by mooks. As for unskippable cutscenes, well, I'd like more if they weren't outright skippable if I'm playing a game for my first time. Unskippable cutscenes are more of a pain for me if I'm replaying a game, but some games allow you to pause the cutscenes, then gives the option skip them while paused, which is pretty much what I prefer.
The worst part of the "Radio Buddy" is when you are forced to walk and hear what the person is saying, restricting you from running until they're done talking.
Oh, the memories ... What about bosses that take forever to die (and if they don't have lifebars, double the pleasure)? One hit deaths, one life only and no continue games (the 8 bit era and early 16 bit had many of these). Stages without checkpoints (it is always a pleasure to start the level over from the beginning). Enemies or obstacles that kill you in one hit even when you do have a lifebar. Games that won't let you pause. Long games without passwords or the possibility to save, or games with long ass passwords. Gosh, we did have a lot of time and patience on the days of old consoles and computers. By the way, great episode guys.
the Mario 3 levels are fun and also the walls that crush you in sonic are fun as well but sometimes you are to good for the scrolling and are stuck waiting for it to scroll cuz you can't move forward
I actually like how cuphead deals with its bossfights, not showing you the lifebar during, but showing how close you came after you die. Really encourages you to keep trying

4) This is something exclusive to the Bubsy series, but fall damage in a 2D platformer when you die in a single hit
5) Choice driven games where your choices actually bear very little to no weight whatsoever
That 4th point has a few more games than you think.
Remember Donkey Kong on the arcade? Wayne's World on the Nes? Stuart Little on the Game Boy Color?
You could have elaborated more on water deaths. How about characters that are aquatic in nature like Frogger for example can’t swim! He’s a frog 🐸! Frogs swim!
Uh oh. George wood would like to know your location
Or turtles that swim through the water to diffuse bombs but die falling into water
@@michaelchauvin7219 You'd think they'd learned to deal with sewer currents considering that's WHERE THEY LIVE.
Not video games in particular, but superheroes in general having an inability to swim. I understand you gotta give them a weakness, but why is it so often swimming?! It's OK if the explanation makes sense, but oftentimes it's just an excuse for SOME sort of weakness.
@@ilopominecrafter Thus bringing up that one bit.
George: Hello!?
Jim: HELLOOOO
George: Ants can crawl anywhere, they don't need mushroom trampolines!
Jim: Yes, you're right! And you know what? Bandicoots don't wear trousers!
Unskippable cutscenes is the best call in this video. Nothing is worse than unskippable scenes that either always replay because of tough stages where I die, or intro ones you see every time you play through a game
Case in point: Ansem-possessed Riku. It doesn't help that Donald and Goofy can't help you in this fight.
I'm from Sweden and i gotta say... If a game doesn't damage you when you touch a waterdrop i won't play it! Uncharted is a good example, you can walk in a rainstorm!!! I hate it!!!!
Viktor Johansson This is a Sweden-only problem. By the way I have loved my Volvo 242 turbo for 2 decades and 300k miles. Thank your countrymen for me please.
I've loved my three Gizmondos, thank your mafia lol
the only time i accepted this mechanic was in the 3D legacy of kain games
I hate that cheat codes were traded out for achievements. Cheat codes extended the gameplay. Achievements are just about narcissism.
No joke, did a double take when I realized you were playing the logo thing at 3x speed.
Gotta be one of my most favorite GameSack episodes ever.
Radio buddy?
sums up the whole Modern FPS scene
The knock back in Symphony of the night is amazing😡
😂
The ending should become it's own mini series. I could literally watch hours of it!
Perfect.
Yes, that's perfectly acceptable and if they need to make a noise, that's how it should be done.
*Radio Static*
Come in, Game Sack. I just wanted to let you know that this was a good episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had a lot of good content that is vital for managing your diabetes. I wouldn't wanna be caught in that shockwave.
*Radio static*
Me: "I don't have any gaming pet peeves."
'The unnecessarily annoying noise'.
Me: *YES*
A jumps, B shoots! (Or was it the other way around?)
Other way around
THIS!
A physical release that is just a box with a download code. Cuphead on the Xbox for example.
Yeah that is a bad one, at least with the Nintendo Switch and 2DS/3DS systems a physical release means just that.
The radio buddy gag is something that sucks in games but is delightful when spoofed on Game Sack. This was another fantastic episode, thank you!
My Super Metroid pet peeve:
If you save in the last save room, you're stuck in the last area of the game.
I never noticed that. Well that sucks.
"Point of no return". Yeah, that one applies to quite a few games, come to think of it.
Kudos to the devs that actually signal when this kind of thing is coming up, though.
I know
That radio buddy example for both "Captain Novolin" and "Streets Of Rage" made me chuckle for sure! :D
My biggest pet peeve is having to wait another 2 weeks for the next GameSack episode.
Ikr
True, but now they release Playing with Sacks in between, and last time they did one episode a week, they burned themselves out :(
The quality of the episodes went way down in the weekly era and you could tell the toll it was taking on them. Bi weekly forever!
Game Sack is the greatest gaming channel 👍
Watching this cured my diabetes. Thank you GameSack!
Do you go out in the rain in America? Are you crazy?
You guys make my favorite videos and I've learned about you like 6 days ago.
Thank you so much.
Glad you found the show! I hope you enjoy!
And then after a bit, Zero comes in and says "back off you smelly man, this robot is my friend" and the fight continues offscreen.
Phantasy star 4 Zio
a diabetes commercial for pets came on immediately following the diabetes radio segment. I was briefly confused.
Top 3 pet peeves are all from the same genre - racing games:
#1 Rubber banding - especially when you are racing perfectly and mess up once then you're in last
#2 When you are in first place and you hardly get bumped on a turn and you go way off the road. But when you try to do it back to them you cannot even budge them and you still go off the road
#3 Challenges that are impossible to finish i.e. get 20 seconds of airborne time in DIRT 5 when there are only a couple of jumps on the track that only give you 1 second of air time on each jump.
When you cant pause during a cutscene.... Right DMC5?!
Man, that upset me A LOT!
I think the New Zealand Story drops in the whale's belly are supposed to be stomach acid.
Ya, because stomach acid tends to drip from the roof of one's mouth.
Unskippable tutorials are worse than unskippable cutscenes. I already know how to play the game, I don't need a tutorial on pushing the move stick.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is terrible for that. Makes you go through a long tutorial of your powers with Luke Cage no matter how many times you've played the game.
Playstation all stars: battle royale says too bad, we arent good like smash
And if you're going to make an unskippable tutorial, at least make it funny.
@@ilikecurry2345
Nah bra, if you're going to make the tutorial unskippable, just don't release.
I don’t mind the baby mario noise. I think from a game design perspective, it’s pretty good. Those other games serve no purpose for the noise though
Sterling Ivey - Sir you must have nerves of steel.
I never understood the raging hate for baby Mario's crying. If it's bothering someone that much, it just means they really suck at the game.
alsdforyou lmao
Helvetica Scenario - you nailed it. I was terrible :/
@@alsdforyou I will admit, it's one of those games I've started over countless times, but never finished.
Otis from Dead Rising, the king of annoying radio buddies
Better than buying the same game with more stuff a year later
@@YadonTheCat I disagree. I would rather buy a "game of the year edition" (of course- not buying the unfinished original version) for 40-60 dollars than pay full AAA prices for unfinished bs.
In defence of water drops and British games...we’re just paranoid about the rain. Seriously, come over, it’s all we ever talk about.
At least Rare never did such a thing to my knowledge, and in fact the DKC games have underwater sections!
Radio buddies is probably the best skit gamesack has ever done. Thanks guys, I thought poopin on Halloween wouldn't be beat
Europeans hate water, apparently. If the game took place in Flint, it would make sense.
Hahaha that vulture in "La Lamuna", had exactly the same problem at the exact same place :D
With that "no life bar" peeve, I'd at least like some sort of indicator that I'm actually hurting it or wearing away its armor.
"Your health is low, do you have any potions? or food?" Fable had the radio buddy and low health alarm all in one!
Day 1 updates on games that take longer to dload and install then it does to get through the single player campaign (applies to many for games)
CONSOLETRUTH2 Also out of control install sizes. Looking at you Red Dead Redemption 2.
Another great example of guys who actually know how to deal with videogames!! Joe and Dave are the best game and console reviewers on TH-cam
People who use terms like "Xbots" and "Sony ponies" unironically are one of my pet peeves.
dont forget the Nintendogs lol. first time ive heard sony ponies.
You definitely hit the nail right on the head with the drops of water. Not that anyone doubted you were going to mention that again in this episode! ;)
One pet peeve I have that no one else seems to share is circle shadows.
I finally found the "drops of water" video again! I saw this segment a year ago while watching on auto play but didn't note the video title.
I love radio buddy's without them I would have never been able to get my diabetes under control! Thank you Radio Buddy!
Permanently missable good/unique items is JRPGs, usually a situation where there's a location that later ceases to be a location you can ever return to. If you get a second chance later I don't mind but easily permanent missable items bug me..if I miss them
Final Fantasy VII had a summon Materia in a one-time only area. That's just plain evil.
What about when your dog barks in the same room as you and your friends and teammates are like: "SHUT YOUR DOG UP BRO! *Kicks you out of Party chat*
You should do a video called "Annoying Isometric Games".
The worst part of the "Radio Buddy" is when you are forced to walk and hear what the person is saying, restricting you from running until they're done talking.
Idea for the next Game Sack episode, "Games that will Help You Manage Your Diabetes"
Has Wilfred Brimley ever been in a video game?
You guys are the coolest. Keep being yourselfs! I always get the feeling of playing games with friends back in the day.
Joe talks about how the Europeans love the water drops was so funny!
Forced/Auto-scrolling in platformers.
Bad hit-detection. Bad jumping controls.
the Mario 3 levels are fun and also the walls that crush you in sonic are fun as well but sometimes you are to good for the scrolling and are stuck waiting for it to scroll cuz you can't move forward
I actually like how cuphead deals with its bossfights, not showing you the lifebar during, but showing how close you came after you die. Really encourages you to keep trying
Wilford Brimley appreciates you spreading the word about diabeetus.
Joe's radio buddy bit kills me every time. Would love to hear Joe star as a radio buddy in some sort of parody game, great amount of potential for humor there.
A Game Sack episode so sweet it gave me diabeetus!
Pet Peeve for me: First level always a tutorial. Gone are the days of instruction booklets inside the game case.
Agreed
So basically speaking, Joe is Dave's biggest pet peeve

I got diabetes from watching this.
6:32 Some of the funniest stuff I've heard in awhile. It just goes on, and on, and on, and then on! Nice work.
You can avoid rewatching the cutscenes in ff 10 by not losing the boss fights. I hope this helps joe.
Of all the skits Game Sack has done, I think radio buddies is my favorite. Especially when it comes to managing your diabetes. Ohhhh no!
The inconsistency with the pogo stick in DuckTales always pissed me off. Otherwise wonderful game!
