I'm going on 30 years as a Lineman... So I will be one of those open positions needing filled when I retire. It is an incredible career! If you have the drive and passion, you can go far. If you don't particularly like hard physical work... You probably would want to find something else. You get out of it what you put into it. I have made an outstanding living financially from this job. Pay attention, your reputation is everything, especially as an apprentice. Don't be "that guy". Be the one they can rely on. Good luck!

Got picked up for wiremen but I still wanted to go the line route so interviewed again with my local. Just got notification that I’m going to our locals boot camp.

@@joshp.4127 as a 1.5 apprentice for the utility in FL, The washout is due to the extremes really. It is very much a hard job, if you arent liked by people you will likely be pushed away/out as is with most blue collar jobs. You also will be put in situations you do NOT want to be in whether relationship wise with peers or actual on the job real sketch/hazardous situations. I also come from a line school and I thought I had a slight understanding of what id be getting into but the knowledge necessary is equal to that of a degree. These guys (real certified journeyman linemen) know so much its stupid. They would do everything themselves if they could. I currently have on my floor 5 books of current past and future knowledge requirements and it can be easily overwhelming if you do not have a life behind the job, or were never a good student, or maybe you have kids and are having a hard time with missing their recitals and working weekends, and having to play with them after working for 18 hours. Im not saying also that other jobs dont experience this but what I am saying is many of these lineschools or people who promote the linemen trade dont talk about this or stress these points enough. You will be teased, mocked, tested, ridiculed, judged, and have no sympathy toward you. The people that stand out are those who can continue past that. All this and its SIGNIFICANTLY better than it was 10/20/30 years ago where all this was MUCH worse with basically friends would control who gets a job and who survives.

I have a family member with a pole set in his yard to teach people (he’s been saying don’t go to the school and get a foot in the door at a utility then transfer to line once in) so I’ve been climbing on that and studying the “lineman and cablemans hand book” by Thomas m shoe maker. @@wecx2375 It’s as close to real world training as you can get. Do some research man. It’s held at the most advanced training Center in the world. Why you so negative? I’ve personally seen it help countless vets find a very meaningful career post military. I feel like you’re just looking for an excuse to bash it even when you know nothing about it.

@@RyanWLucas I am a vet, served 1ID. And nah, I don't like companies that prey on vets for profit by creating some weird paramilitary corporation. I experienced that before in Liberty energy and others. On the job training still the best. That center is for indoctrination to be exploited.
