  • @niehawl2987
    @niehawl2987 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, thanks for the tip, I was wondering if you had any cues regarding that quick power generation off the bottom of the squat. When i look at my squats i’m never able to come off the floor with that much speed and drive. Thanks :D

    • @robmarsh918
      @robmarsh918 ปีที่แล้ว

      What type of drills do you already do? Or do you only do straight reps?

    • @niehawl2987
      @niehawl2987 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robmarsh918 I usually incorporate straight reps, pauses at either middle or bottom or both and chains for variations. I could just never articulate that feeling of explosive power like the speed on how I see these people explode up from the bottom

    • @robmarsh918
      @robmarsh918 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@niehawl2987 You could cross train with power/plyometric drills to improve overall explosiveness. Depth Jumps may be good along with regular box jumps, bc it teaches your muscles how to snap up out of the squat position. Just be sure to learn how to do them properly if you haven’t done them before.
      Another thing that may be hindering you - ironically enough - is having too much control. If your only drills are pause reps, perhaps you need to teach yourself how to use that bounce at the bottom to help you snap back up faster. Most people have the opposite problem, where they carelessly rely on the bounce too much. But learning that sweet spot of still maintaining control with the bounce takes time. And when I say “bounce” it’s still subtle enough that you can still utilize it with a relatively slow eccentric. No need to dive bomb.
      One more thing or option that could help is concentric control drills. A lot of people focus on exploding upward, but just like dive bombing, if you don’t slow it down and teach your legs how to use the right muscles to rise up, you get hindered. For instance, an common mistake is once people get out the bottom, they immediately drift into their toes. This puts more emphasis on quads, taking out the glutes. So of course they are missing out on power without posterior support. Try slowing down the concentric and ask yourself “Am I using my entire leg (glues, hams, quads) on the way up as I am on the way down?” If not, do something like a 3-1-3. It’s brutal but it may help.

      yes. it creates intra abdominal pressure which creates an extremely stable core and spine

  • @thechosenone93

    Controlled down
    Power up
    So does that mean that strength in the squat or front squat is built in the eccentric portion of the lift?

    • @robmarsh918
      @robmarsh918 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not exclusively. I think drilling the eccentric is pushed so much bc too many people default into relying on the bounce to get back up. They don’t learn how to stay in control, and so that’s their weak point. But it all depends on what the individual needs to work on. For instance if you can control it on the way down, but you drift back onto your toes on the way up, then that means you have to practice the concentric, which you don’t see a lot but it is done.

    • @SisypheanRoller
      @SisypheanRoller ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason is very simple: if you don't control the eccentric, your muscles, ligaments, tendons etc don't adapt as much. When you let the weight crush you down and then bounce up, you are increasing risk of injury as you start to add more weight.

    Asking out of honest confusion - I see this all the time, so maybe there's something useful going on that I'm just not aware of. What purpose does the person standing behind him really serve? I assume they're attempting to "spot" his lift but, if he couldn't complete the lift (or, worse yet, experienced an injury that caused him to drop it), how much could they really contribute to helping him get it up? Aren't they standing right where the bar is going to land if he misses the lift and has to bail out from under the bar? It seems like, with this much weight on the bar, there should be a strong lifter at each end of the bar (outside of the cage) to have any hope of controlling the bar path if something went wrong. Just looks ineffective and unnecessarily dangerous to me. Could they do anything from that angle/position that wouldn't completely upset his balance?
