It puzzles me why somebody would lie and say they leased a car in Costa Rica for $62 when it is one of the most costly places to do so. Awful things like that would be expected from Alamo when trying to make a sale, but I am interested in hearing your reasoning for spreading such disinformation. YOU KNOW IT WASN'T JUST $62.
Most precisely, it was $61.96 Looking at official PDF receipt now with breakdown Mid Size Automatic Vehicle Rate charge (1 week) @ $37.04 Airport fee $5.99 Environmental fee $2.80 Vehicle registration recoupment fee $9.00 IVA $7.13 Total $61.96 Truth here was it was one of the best deals ever 😊 The year was 2019 (pre-covid) during slow season It's easy to imagine if you try You are forgiven, Aldrin 🕊️❤️🙏 Much love & pura vida 🤙
I just reserved a car in San Jose for 8 days its $115 its super cheap just don't get all the insurance if you credit card covers it. That will double or more the price!
I've been heavily researching videos about CR for my trip in 2 weeks, and this is by far the best one. I appreciate you telling us exactly where to go to include the tour companies to use. Where should I use a tour company and where should I just hike without a guide? Cheers.
Happy to hear that! Thank you 🙏 Everything done during this trip was self-led though several years back experienced very nice tours with kayaking and through jungle. Would recommend seeing what you find for current tours on tripadvisor or the like. The people of Costa Rica are amazingly warm and have only had great guided experiences. Enjoy out there! Pura vida 🤙🌺
Planning a trip for this summer! This is this best video I've seen on Costa Rica so far. Didn't know renting a car was sooo cheap there. Can't wait. Thank you for this!!
@@transit2freedom Hi! Could you please share your tricks to get this great price? Alamo is currently almost 10 times more expensive than what you have said in your video. Thanks!
Thanks! And yes, Costa Rica is so beautiful! I'm into astrophotography and had a chance to sneak a peak at your astrophotography vid. The Aurora Borealis always makes me tear up. Thanks for capturing it in such great light :)
I’m so torn on whether to rent a car or not. I’m doing a solo trip and plan at staying at hostels so I’m not sure there will be parking. But the public transportation sounds like such a headache
Yes, tough decision indeed. Good news is you'll be in Costa Rica regardless 😊 At time of trip in video, cost of a rental car was so low. With only 7 days and a desire to see a lot, it was a no-brainer. If you have a longer stay in Costa Rica, public transport (cost advantage) or taxi hire (time advantage) are both worth consideration 🙏 Have a beautiful time out there 🤙
Thank you for asking. Haven't personally snorkeled or scuba-dived in Costa Rica. Perhaps someone might be able to chime in with recommendations for you. Safe travels and pura vida! 🤙
This is an amazing video. How did you manage to book your car rental for so cheap? Most videos I’ve watched claim the insurance and tax costs are insane.
Thank you! Seems to be most frequent question. The more we've learned about other experiences more we realize we got very very lucky. Don't know that it'll be something capable of recreating. Wish video made it a little clearer. We were able to decline insurance (used credit card coverage). We also brought back a flat tire (rode back in on a spare). They assessed it and didn't charge us for it. There was a tremendous amount of grace 🙏🌈 pura vida
Yes! While planning trip developed sense for paths to take. Once on ground, Google Maps and checking in with locals in parts requiring current insight on road conditions (e.g., Nicoya Peninsula river crossings). With Google Maps, one can download offline maps of any region and use GPS on phone even without service. Comes in handy! Hope you have chance to get to Costa Rica soon. Pura vida 🤙
Hi curious since you rented a car from Alamo if you were able to avoid the in-country liability insurance I keep reading so much about? If not do you know of a way to avoid it? I’d prefer to book through my credit card which offers insurance on rentals but I’ve read that you have to negotiate hardcore with them to waive the insurance and I don’t speak Spanish so negotiating may not be in my best interest. TIA!
Thanks Kevin! Really appreciate you taking time to provide feedback 🙏 For deeper dive on any particular section, itinerary linked in description and / or Costa Rica Dreaming (CRD) series might be able to help. In the CRD series, each day has a dedicated video. For pacing of editing, yes, definitely a fast one! Good to slow down. Noted! Thanks again 🕊️
Haha..passing politely on their left 🤣🙏 Single lane countryside roads almost necessitate passing if car ahead is moving glacially and won't pull over 🗻😁🤷♂️ Though be wary of blind corners ☝️
So we have 3 couples going in April for 8 days. 2 of which are travel. Flying in to San jose. We would like to stay in one central location preferably close to the beach and make day trips. Waterfalls, volcanoes, cloud forest etc.. Any recommendations?
Do you know anything about having to buy another a third party insurance when you rented the car? I’m hearing bad stories about people having to buy expensive insurance when they get to the rental car place.
I see everywhere that there will be a significant charge for insurance on vehicle rental when you get there. Was this your experience? Great video, btw!
Thanks for watching! Rented from a major car rental brand (e.g., Hertz, Alamo, Enterprise, etc.) and had no problem using free insurance offered on credit card. That being said, it did seem insurance needed to come from somewhere. Hope that helps! 🙏 Pura vida🤙
Thanks so much for this itinerary! This is exactly what I want my 7 day trip to look like when I visit. Can I ask how you got a rental car so cheap? I'm finding they are at least $400/week with the liability insurance. Any insight you have would be SUPER helpful as I'm on a budget!
Absolutely! Not having a 4 wheel drive vehicle saved ~$300, if I recall correctly. Got by just fine with a little sedan. Also, traveling during the shoulder season helped (e.g., November). Lastly, using travel aggregator websites like Kayak made comparison easy. As mid-December rolls around, prices tend to increase on lodging and transportation until ~April. Hope that helps! ¡Buen viaje!
Didn't personally have any issues. Perhaps they place a couple hundred dollar credit hold like most rental companies. You get it back upon return. Ended up with a flat tire the last day. Had just left the amazing cloud forests. Was so relaxed I just ate snacks in the car while the sun gave me a nice big hug 🤗 Was concerned later the flat might result in some fees upon return. They analyzed the tire and said, 'Good to go!' 'You sure?!' 'Yes, good to go! Safe trip home!' 'Pure vida 🙏' Was grateful for that, the spare, and a kind gentleman who saw my tire changing struggles at the cloud forest and lent a huge hand. Pura vida
Thanks for question! Congrats on upcoming trip 😊 Anything is possible though recommend putting together a carless itinerary. Most major travel guides / books gear or include information for carless travelers. That's one safe place to start. Lonely Planet is one guide that tends to have information online. Just make sure modes of transport used in guides are still operating as stated Without ability to hop into a car at-will and move as you'd like, what you watched in video would be exceedingly challenging to recreate in 7 days and cannot be recommended Good news though! Each year so so many people travel solo and without a car and have the time of their life in Costa Rica. Sending good vibes your way for such a trip for you and pura vida 🤙🌺🙏
Timing Late November (pre-covid) Car rental Basic sedan without 4wd via aggregator site (e.g., kayak) - went with a well-known global rental company, 4wd vehicles were several hundred dollars more at time, prices often fluctuate Car insurance Credit card (insurance from rental at time cost more than car rental itself though covered liabilities beyond car) Quite likely finding a $62 car for a week will be tough to replicate. Really blessed to find that one then Hope that helps 🙏
@@transit2freedom Thank you for your detailed response. I wanna go to Arenal, Jaco, and Mauel Antonio. Still thinking about getting a rental, a 4 wd or a 2 wd. Do you think a 2 wd SUV is good enough?
No worries! You should be ok with ground clearence of SUV. If crossing rivers, make sure to check with someone on ground in Costa Rica beforehand. Road conditions can change quickly day to day. Generally speaking, roads in Costa Rica are great 😊
Hi Julia! This was pre-covid. It was an amazing deal even then 😲 Likely booked through Kayak or equivalent. Could've done a better job in video of reflecting just how big of a blessing that price was 🙏 Generally speaking, car rental rates seem to be a lot more expensive now across much of the world. Sorry no helpful tips. Have a beautiful time in Costa Rica! Pura vida 🤙🌈
What month was this? I'm considering going next month but not sure what to expect since its still considered rainy season in November. Any reccomendations?
Toward November's end. Blessed with no serious rain. Perhaps bring a poncho in case and if serious rain, stick to major roads which are generally in great shape and avoid river crossings if at all possible. You should be more than fine! Pura vida 🤙
Honest question, I am planning a trip to costa rica for May 2021 and I am seeing amazing videos of people in the wilderness, how are they not scared of a big wild cat coming out all of a sudden. Are there certain areas to avoid more than others? Thanks to whomever can answer.
You don't have to worry about that, all you have to do is to stay on the trails, in the forest, you can easily get lost or get yourself into danger if you come out of the well defined paths, there are also signs along the routes.
I read everywhere that renting car online for a very cheap price. They will make you pay $500/600 more when you pick up the car. Did you have the same issue? Bcuz this is very cheap. Thank you
Can't comment on rest of internet 😊 though certainly didn't share that experience. Paid what was in video. The rental did place a credit card hold as any rental company typically does which was released upon return. Few things that might have helped: selected a 2WD sedan, traveled during off-season, rented from a major rental company. Worked out great! 4WD vehicles were many times more expensive.
Got a great price on plane ticket ($288 roundtrip), on car rental ($62 for a week), and hotels, food, activities, gas, etc. probably came to under $400. Would say trip cost under $1,000. Apologies, not sure how helpful as 3 years ago Safe travels 🙏
