  • @joda7697
    @joda7697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +763

    I know why stockfish didn't like that move at the start: you could have advanced your king to trap his, defend rook attacks with your horsie and bishop, and then mated with the rook on the back rank.

    • @simonnading
      @simonnading 2 ปีที่แล้ว +170

      What did he just say about backseating his videos? Ha, love it

    • @newpgaston6891
      @newpgaston6891 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      I thought about that too, but I'm not sure that's the reason... Stockfish says it's +5.6 for black, so obviously no easy checkmate is possible there.
      And black sacrificing a rook for the knight doesn't even work either (as you'd just bring the bishop in as a shield) so it would not justify the analysis difference.
      So I think the reason why Stockfish doesn't like that move, is because it achieves nothing because there's no follow up checks (other than repeating moves), and it brings the king closer, and it can get even closer with tempo on the rook. So basically it's just wasting moves for no reason.
      I think Stockfish wanted to start capturing pawns right away, because pawns are what will really matter in the game, not random checks.

    • @lajont
      @lajont 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Tbh that would just provoke rook d1+, bishop d4, rook xd4+, knight xd4, rook gxe1 blocking the back rank checkmate. (Yes, I thought about this too when I watched the video, and decided to look closer at that position before commenting)

    0:50 Stockfish didn`t like that move because it misses a strong mating opportunity. The move here is Kd6 first, preventing black`s king from having an escape route before Re8#. It may be possible for black to stop mate, but would be difficult because Rd1+ can be blocked by Bd2. Rc1 attempting to put the rook in a position to block mate doesn`t seem to work because the knight just takes it. If black just keeps throwing rooks at the situation, they could survive.

    0:32 I'm new to chess strategy and wondering if moving queen to E8 after black moves queen to B8 would be a good move. It pins black's queen, and allows white to trade queens at any time. I know it's generally a bad idea to trade when you're down in material, but if black decides to take with queen, it allows back-rank mate all the same. Can anyone with more experience explain why this is or isn't a bad move?

      @@sethgoolsby6324 Yes, both you and Wollwolff are pointing out that black can put the white king in check with one of their rooks, which I admittedly didn't see. However, I think you're missing that white can instead block a rook check with their bishop instead of their rook. I have played around with the position a bit, and it does look like queen E8 is a bad move. After the rook check white can easily fall into a forced mate unless they take black's queen which evidently they obviously should have simply done sooner.

      Pretty sure he could play this challenge a thousand times in 100 rated chess, and not come close even once.
      First stating the obvious: 100 rated players blunder their pieces every 5 moves, and if you don't take them all, then YOU have a blunder for not playing the best move.
      So you need to play a full game without the player blundering his pieces... Because if you DO take them all (to avoid blundering) then there's no way the player can checkmate you while being super down in material, without you committing a blunder.
      But even if somehow it happens because a grandmaster made a new account or something, well getting checkmated while playing a good game is really hard. Pawn losses count as blunder sometimes, so you have to stay solid all game long, while losing anyway. But usually (even if you don't blunder a piece) losses are caused by a positional blunder or something.
      Even something like "losing a losing position that could've been held for a draw" often counts as a blunder.
