What causes the bulls to act like this? Are bulls being harmed?

There's a cotton strap (Called a flank strap) tied around the bull's flank. The strap is not tight, just tight enough that it doesn't slip off. They don't like the sensation of something hugging their flank so it encourages the bull to buck harder (Contrary to popular belief, the strap is not tied around the bull's genitals). As a matter of fact, if the flank strap is too tight, the bull may not even buck at all. The bulls must be pain-free to be able to perform at full strength. If they are subjected to any appreciable pain, they straight up will refuse to work.
In rodeo riding, the bulls are extremely valuable and well trained, and hence are exceptionally well cared for. Causing the bulls any pain is bad and is increasingly being frowned upon in professional rodeos (e.g., regulating or prohibiting the use of things like cattle prods and spurs).
