Fantastic info. Thank you for this. I bought one at Goodwill and there wasn't any instructions and the website didn't have a manual... You made my day.
Sir, you saved the day for me. My Oreck keep making this loud popping noise continuously. I couldn't use it at night when I needed it most for my breathing. I was about to throw a perfectly good purifier in the garbage. I googled the popping noise problem. Google said clean it. That's when I found you on TH-cam. I followed your every step. All the processes. Put my Oreck back together. Not one ounce of noise. Thank you so much. You truly did save me and my Oreck. She is running smoother than ever.
I found and bought one also at a Goodwill for $15 also, and then found another one a month later again for $15, they both work great. Put one in the Living room and the other in the bedroom, what a bargain for them.
We too have had the sparking problem with our personal home units. The solution that worked for us was to clean the Truman cell again, but let them completely soak in the soapy water for a few hours, then thoroughly rinse them, and let them dry for 24 hours.
Thank you, i bought one for my husband years ago. I never thought much about it after he died. Lately my allergies have been acting up. I really do appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate how to clean the machine.
So sorry to read those heart wrenching words honey. 💔 I'm glad your still giving yourself a chance at living, not just being, and wanting more for your health. I hope you got it working again, it really does make such a huge difference in the air. Make sure the ionizer Is on so you get the full benefits of the purifier. Great video, my Oreck is placed near the kitchen, routinely cleaned as per manual and lately I have noticed a lot of dust on my floor and counters after 3 days of vacuuming. I have turned it off now. Would anyone know why this is happening?
The Oreck shouldn’t be on the floor, if that’s where you've been running it from … to the best of my knowledge, the Oreck doesn’t produce dust, it traps it.
No, its not on the floor, placed on a low table near the kitchen to remove cooking ordors,. I have never had this problem in the past 15 years, I would clean every filter as your video in the past but now the amount of dust on the floor and counter is so strange, I know its from the Oreck machine. I was hoping to know why, is there a filter that needs to be replaced after years of using the machine? I have turned it off for the past 2 days. Is there a test I can do to find out if it is the Oreck or something else that causing this dust. My furnance is new and all the ducts are cleaned out, so strange. Maybe you have a suggestion on a test I can try. @@AccessingHealth
Many thanks for this video.Well done.Cheers!Brilliant air purifier in my opinion,I have owned many air purifiers, and I can honestly say this one is by far one of the better ones if not the best Ive purchased.Thankyou again.
Thank you. I bought the Oreck XL at a church second hand store for $7.50. It works really well, but I needed to know how to take it apart and find and clean the filter. It's a slightly different model, but I get it. Thanks.
My wife and I just bought one of these at a thrift shop for 10$. I plan on cleaning it and using it. Yours was the first video to come up on a Google search. After viewing it I see I don't have to look any further! I did download the User's Guide from Oreck, however. Also the brush was missing. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the info, I found a little older model at the Flea Market for $20 and wasn't sure if there was a 'special cleaner' or perhaps the use of vinegar on the ion exchange plates to descale..
I do not have a dishwasher. My daughter has had my Oreck, it's over 20 years old. I had Oreck spray before to clean the main cell and also told it can go in the sink with warm water and needs to dry of course. Is this acceptable if you don't have a dishwasher?
Yes it can, however, without the cell, the effectiveness is greatly reduced. After all, it’s mostly all about what the cell does to purify the air flowing through it.
Thanks for the video! My grandpa just gave me this air purifier for my room, but no instructions to go with it... Now I can set it up and clean it by myself ☺️ My only problem is the collector light that keeps flashing even when I hold the button 😐
I’m pretty sure you are referring to the button that opens the tray where you place an air scent tablet, which of course, aren’t available anymore as far as I know.
Question. A friend gave me one of these. I just cleaned and the collector cell won’t reset. I noticed one of the thin wires is missing. Is this causing it to not reset? And will it effect the clean? Thx
From your description of your unit that was given to you, it seems to have some damage. Sorry, can’t help you with that. Who knows what else is damaged.
Really good how-to video. Very detailed. Your camera crew did a good job ensuring the novice user could see the details clearly. Wish all how-to videos were that easy to follow. A couple of questions, do you pull the cell out of the dishwasher before the drying begins? Do you use soap or just water? Do you clean it this way every 30 days if your using it daily? Thanks again, Dawn from CA
Leave cell inside dish washer even through the drying portion. Ok to use your standard soap for dishwasher. You'll know when to clean the cell. It's when the red LED comes on, or, on a monthly schedule is also a good idea.
Hey thanks for this....you guys did a very nice explanation...I have two of these and cleaned them both according to your directions....awesome thank you!
I cleaned my Oreck exactly how this video said, got it all back together just fine. But after resetting the revitalizer only worked for about 8hrs and now wont come on. The fan works fine. Any suggestions?
That was an excellent tutorial. Its been such a long time since Ive cleaned my filter, that I didnt even remember there were 2 other filters in addition to the Truman cell and Im glad you explained the air revitalyzer.. I dont remember that being necessary for the Truman cell to work, so thanks again.
We nick named ours " Sparky" .. just have to keep it clean. It got me through hazardous smoke conditions due to wildfires south west of us. On a side note. I take the face plate off and clean that too. It slides of easy from right to left. Plus for a quick clean up I disassemble outside, and use my battery powered leaf blower. Thanks for the video Peace.
Great video I have had mine for 14 years and still going strong I have in total 4 in my house now haha. Cleaning all mine right now as I’m watching this video haha was just interested in how others clean there’s. i have been buying Oreck products for years from our local Oreck store and love them. I do want to recommend that it says in the manual that you are not suppose to get the odor absorber wet and for dish washing the cell never thought of that I will have to ask my Oreck store if this is safe for it. But either way good video
I too have mine for 14 years and read not to get the odor absorber wet and to just use vacuum it. I have placed my Oreck near the kitchen and lately I have noticed a lot of dust on my floor and counters after 3 days of vacuuming. I have turned it off now. Would anyone know why this is happening?
Nobody has said anything about the pop-out tray on the right side of the oreck xl; so what is that for? And my red light keeps coming back after a reset but I guess something isn't dry enough yet. It was working at the thrift store a few hours ago so we'll see in a day. Got it for five bucks and it looks barely used. No brush though.
Thank you for this wonderful easy to follow video. One question, in cleaning the screen filter and the charcoal filter, is it just water or do you use soap? Please advise.
I don’t believe you need to sanitize the filter, just to clean it with the dishwasher soap action. The dishwasher soap is what’s going to clean the filter.
Purchase the Oreck Air Purifier Truman Cell Cleaner, part # 35358 or Soak in soap & warm water for 20 minutes or so. Move the Cell around in the water to loosen dirt, rinse Cell in clean water. Let the Truman cell dry for 24 hours, Do Not put the cell in the unit if wet. Using a vacuum & upholstery brush is a good idea. Putting this in a dishwasher, not so much I'd say. Another instructional video mentions calling Oreck for free replacement wires that go into the front of the Cell, but haven't tried that yet. The Oreck has 3 filters, the black screen filter in the front, the yellow Truman cell in the middle, and the black charcoal filter in the back. Not sure which one you're referring to, regardless, you can either purchase from Oreck or go online and research the various vendors and their prices. We don't make purchase recommendations.

It might need a deep cleaning, which requires disassembling the unit. That is beyond the scope of our video. It’s a half day job if you want to undertake it.
It’s located on the right-side face towards the top back. There’s a recessed slot/carrier and round button under it. Press the round button to release the slot/carrier that holds the “absorber filter.” BTW, we don’t use it, and lots of folks don’t either. If you don’t want to be bothered with it, press the round button, remove the filter from the slot/carrier, close it up, and toss the old filter.
Probably needs to be cleaned. If you just cleaned it, might not have been cleaned well enough. Doubt it’s small bugs unless you removed the filters in the front.
Thank you for your great demonstration. The Only problem I have with my unit is putting lid back On. In your demo your is Silver (I guess) my lid is Black. I have so much trouble with it, yours just went In so easily, mine is Pure Hell to put back On. Any suggestions. Thanks
Thank you for this very informative video! I was always a little hesitant on cleaning the Truman cell as I fear I would break something... but I think if I place it in warm soapy water, rinse, and let air dry, it should do the trick. Thanks again!
To be honest if that much is getting past the main filter it is time to look at other options! Had a oreck air purifier 20 plus years ago... mother smoked and it did help but to be honest HEPA is the way to go! Check out the WINIX 5500-2 ! Filters are reasonable and do the best of any air cleaner I have had except my IQAIR healthpro which is 900 bucks! Winix you can get for 140 to 200 depending on price on Amazon!
The cover first drops into place and then you slide it back. Place the cover over the unit about ½ inch back from where it will slide forward, drop into place, and then slide back.
Thanks aa bunch, I also noticed others taking out the allen key screws too. After the PH2 screws come out. Is this necessary? As I have everyone but the allen key needed., lol Many thanks though I amcleaning it as we speak. Much love and blessings.
Ok. So i did clean it very well and delicately with dawn dish soap and Kaboom. It took 10xs or more to get it completely clean. It was so black and dirty. But for those who do not have a dishwasher like me. I took a straw brush and cleaned it that way. Just pay very close attention not to mess with the strings on the front.... break one and its ruined....
Next time... to clean the “big yellow filter”, ie, the “Truman cell”... place it in a deep plastic bin or tall plastic bucket filled with hot water and dish soap, and leave it in there for 24 hours. Then take it out and let dry for another 24 hours. Then attempt the reset.
I did submerge it in dawn and easy off which did help but it needed to be scrubbed it was so dirty. I got it at a thrift store. I did actually tighten the wires after I got it clean and it's working perfectly fine 🙂 👌 😋 🙃 it kicks ass actually. Being so old sometimes the light foes come on but I just hold it 5 seconds and it blinks 3xs and goes back off. Only sometimes it does that tho. It's one of the first models so it's amazing to have a working oreck xl professional air purifier in perfect working condition 👌 🙌 👏 😀 👍🏻
Thank you this was so helpful! My son has been suffering a bit of asthma lately and I remember I had one of these! Brought it out and thanks to your video now know how to clean it! Quick question is there ever a time that you would have to replace the main filter cell?
Good video.. I own two of these units- they must be 12 years old and still work like new. I think the dishwasher is too much force and could break the small wires in the Truman cells. I clean the components in the sink with warm sudsy water and a good rinse- then the parts air dry in no time.
THANK YOU! I called the Oreck repair shop I found in my area by calling the 800 # on the back and FYI REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE - so.....here I am trying to learn how to STOP the sparking sounds on this almost never used device...I remember now I quit using it because of the stupid incessant sparking noises! All done and drying now - fingers crossed (: (Not sure why we would have to wait for everything to dry, air flow through the unit? would finish the drying part?) THANK YOU THANK YOU!
The yellow Truman cell has to be dry before inserting it back into the unit, otherwise, any tiny water droplets present inside could cause damage to internal electrical circuits, ie, a short-circuit.
I would call yours pretty clean. After a year in my bedroom it looks pretty disgusting and I put everything into the dishwasher except the charcoal filter which I just vacuum out. Its been running 24/7 for at least 12 years now on low but still works great. You can find them on craigslist or facbook for under 100 bucks.
This is the best air purifier you can buy .... why? Because it moves the air the motor is strong - Most importantly it’s has a Truman Cell which is a mega-sized Ionizer - way bigger than in any other air purifier and probably not even legal today - This Truman Cell ionizer creates negative ions that attract positive particulates floating in the air which then fall to the ground or are trapped in the filter. And the huge volume of air turnover makes a room smell just like after an electrical rain storm - clean oxygen air. By Far the best filter - if you find one in a thrift stores- buy it.
I bought the 2 older models before this model they required cleaning ones a month these new models its its every 2 weeks also why not use a vacuum brush is simpler

I am getting a continual sparking in the Truman cell. This is the first time this has happened. What should I do?
You can dry the truman cell with a blow dryer that can have a mode with cold air in less than 30 minutes.
If you want to “speed dry it” holding a hair dryer for half an hour, instead of letting it dry by itself in one day that's fine.
It could no be more clearer! Thank you!

That is beyond the scope and intention of the original video. Cleaning the fan requires a complete disassembly. Good luck and be careful.

Purchase the Oreck Air Purifier Truman Cell Cleaner, part # 35358 or Soak in soap & warm water for 20 minutes or so. Move the Cell around in the water to loosen dirt, rinse Cell in clean water. I have the same problem and mine is silver. I can’t get the cover back on. it does not slide on like this one.
Thank you for this very informative video! I was always a little hesitant on cleaning the Truman cell as I fear I would break something... but I think if I place it in warm soapy water, rinse, and let air dry, it should do the trick. Thanks again!
So happy you took the plunge!
Why am I having trouble closing the lid? I’m following the demo and it’s not sliding back into place.
I don't know what to say. It can be a little tricky.
I google and watch your demo now. Can you give me a tip to put the top cover back?
The cover first drops into place and then you slide it back. Place the cover over the unit about ½ inch back from where it will slide forward, drop into place, and then slide back.
Thanks aa bunch, I also noticed others taking out the allen key screws too. After the PH2 screws come out. Is this necessary? As I have everyone but the allen key needed., lol
Many thanks though I amcleaning it as we speak.
Much love and blessings.
What we recommend is what we recommend … doing more is not necessary … doing less is sub-optimal.
Blessings to you!!
I'll bet you could re-wire that Truman Cell.
@@nikkilovetheyardsale-again2608 They REALLY grab the dirt, don't they?
Thank you this was so helpful! My son has been suffering a bit of asthma lately and I remember I had one of these! Brought it out and thanks to your video now know how to clean it! Quick question is there ever a time that you would have to replace the main filter cell?
So glad to help! I suppose you are referring to the Truman cell, the big yellow filter. Replace only if it becomes damaged or corroded/rusted.
Why it is making a tick sound when it is on.
Fantastic demo...thank you!
You made the job a joy - thank you,
Glad to help!
Good video.. I own two of these units- they must be 12 years old and still work like new. I think the dishwasher is too much force and could break the small wires in the Truman cells. I clean the components in the sink with warm sudsy water and a good rinse- then the parts air dry in no time.
I understand. We put the Truman cell in the top rack with wires pointing up.
Thanks for sharing I was about to ask since I dont have a dish washer. I bought my back on 2009..$400
You can find replacement parts on ebay
thank you now i can clean my unit, great video.
thank you this was very helpful ;)
Great turorial, thanx!
I’m going to try this and see what happens!
The manual specifically states NOT to put in dishwasher.
Original instructions said never put charcoal filter under water ????
The choices are, 1) clean the filter with water, 2) buy a new filter every time it gets dirty, 3) vacuum the filter if it’s not too dirty.
@@AccessingHealth yes….right….thank you for giving me the nerve to rinse it…..it gets really bad……thank you for the valuable video…👍👍
@@pennydalponte God bless!
I wanted to know how to wash the ionizer plates this did not explain this..
The yellow Truman cell are the ionizer plates.
Thanks just got one useful
Thank you 👏👏👏
I thought you can’t wet a charcoal filter
I would call yours pretty clean. After a year in my bedroom it looks pretty disgusting and I put everything into the dishwasher except the charcoal filter which I just vacuum out. Its been running 24/7 for at least 12 years now on low but still works great. You can find them on craigslist or facbook for under 100 bucks.
Good to know!
AGREED!! We actually bought ours used on Craigslist years ago and it just keeps chugging along. ☺ We love our Oreck!
VEARY HELPFUL TY
Thank you…thank you….
RIP David Oreck.
I bought the 2 older models before this model they required cleaning ones a month these new models its its every 2 weeks also why not use a vacuum brush is simpler
