They can rent out historical costumes, so I hope they didn’t have to make all those, but it’s still impressive that they made (probably) made Dream’s and Hibs costumes for shorts scenes over centuries.
they probably rented the outfits or got it from other period productions, wich is wat every movie and series does in cases like this. Gaiman himself must have a easy way to get those, since amazon's Good Omens also had a lot of scenes in different time periods
I'm impressed how the costume department managed to get Death's costume from the graphic novel so exactly right. It's just a pair of jeans and a top, but it fits the actress perfectly.
I love Gaiman's Death because she is one of the best versions of a very used, very essential and powerful archetype: the gentle end, made beautiful and lovable by giving it the shape of a decent, caring, compassionate person. I love Hob Gadling even more, because he is the best version of a very rarely seen, very essential yet extremely forgotten archetype: the dignified refusal of the end, made beautiful and lovable by giving it the shape of a inquisitive, persevering yet humble person. Hob isn't a hero who FIGHTs death as something evil, or a monster who PERVERTs death's function. He just refuses to surrender to an end, even a gentle one. He's simply not done yet.
In Roman Catholicism, death is one of the aspects of the Mother of God. She was there at His birth, she was there at the End. We pray for "Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte" (Our Lady of Goodeath) to pray for us now and at the time of our death.
I always said that Gaiman's Death and Discworld's Death should start a union. People like Supernatural's Death would be very interested to join. To arrest and defrock creatures like Final Destination's sadist Death. And Death from Castlevania wears a *_crown,_* does he not? /a skull, a black-haired girl and an old mortician glare at the camera
Not gonna lie Hob Gadling is probably one of my favourite characters in DC, as he explores concept that no matter what happens humans will be humans. I find this kind of message really reassuring
I LOVE how the very first time they enter the tavern there’s a man telling a dirty joke about a vicar hunting rabbits, and when Hob goes to meet Dream in the 1980s, the *same* exact punchline can be heard being delivered by an extra/offscreen bar patron, exemplifying the observation that “the more things change, the more the stay the same, quite literally, drinking the same liquor & telling the same old jokes ~400+ years later
i like how Hob not only lives in human society but thrives in it. He can not only love people but let them go. He accepts immortality both its pros and cons.
It's always great to see some deserved appreciation for Hob Gadling! He was indeed the turning point for Dream, the first to cause a change in him. "Men of Good Fortune" was the issue that made me fall in love with Sandman.
I teared up when Dream found him again after his imprisonment. It was so well played out in the show. At first I wasn’t sure. Made me think of my friendships, only the strongest survive a long absence. Love the show and the comic immensely.
It's interesting how Neil made us look at Immortality in a different light and not the same motif that was used for years in literature and television. Cant wait for Hob to appear again in season 2.
I’m so happy to see this! There’s been an upsetting lack of analysis on TH-cam about Sandman and it was such a great season. Going in completely blind to its history, I really enjoyed it and what it was trying to do. I especially loved the significance of Hob to the story and his relationship with Dream. I’ve since started reading the comics and have just finished Seasons of Mists. I understand why some comic viewers are upset about changes - as I’ve also seen things I love adapted and not the way I would have liked - but I think you’re correct in having to consider them as two seperate (but related) texts. The way I believe Neil and the producers approached it was that it had to be accepted and understandable by a general audience for it to be renewed by a cancel happy Netflix, plus they had other requirements they had to meet (such as 45+ min runtime). So I understand the padding and such. As well as changing/rearranging bits of the story to make more sense for a new audience and give it more cohesion. The fact that they sat down before approaching Netflix and outlined not just the first season but I think up to the fourth (???) tells me they have a plan on how to make it a good story. This also wouldn’t be the first time Neil had decided to update his work over the years as new editions are released and his views and storytelling skills change and adapt. All this to say, as the Netflix series I really enjoyed it. Yes it’s different from the comic but nothing is ever a 100% adaptation as context will always change, whether that’s medium or period and place a text is created in.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and I'm in absolute agreement with you! I shared most of these sentiments in all my previous videos. I'm glad you got started on the comics, and I hope you are enjoying them so far! :)

Man I rewatched this episode like 6 times. Some of the most heartwarming stuff. I feel like they did this part better than the comic, which is saying something
Very good analysis! However, Hob did not show up early in the 80s. He showed up right on time, but Morpheus was imprisoned and could not make the meeting. What Hob does do, however, was wait an extra 30 years, probably buying the new pub when the old one closed, and most likely visiting the Pub every year for 30 years on there scheduled date until Dream finally shows up. THat proved his great friendship, that he did not give up on Dream and kept waiting for him.
I was wondering that perhaps Dream found Hob when he was ready to meet while Hob was dreaming and told Hob that he wanted to meet, so then Hob knows to show up at the inn to wait for and meet Dream.
The most interesting character in the series. I expected the typical guy who after seeing how their family and friends died, would ask to die as well. But surprisingly he explained and give reasons to keep living and experimenting things as human being. Could be possible to base a whole series just with this guy and sandman. Their conversations were so interesting.
My brother once explained the Hob storyline, and it was the one thing that convinced me to read Sandman a few years back. I do not regret it in the slightest.
I was elated when youtube recommended me this video! Since I read the comics way back when, Hob and Dream's relationship has been my absolute favourite. This was a lovely think piece, thank you. I find that ending so sweet because at first it leads you to think hob may have possibly accepted death and left dream alone only to show he still waited for dream and now morphius reciprocates hobs friendship
This was an absolutely beautiful analysis of Hob Gadling's character! Dream and Hob's relationship was one of the most compelling aspects of the show for me and to see it getting its well-deserved love fills me with happiness. Thank you for making this video.
Hob is THE everyman and is so necessary as a character. By the nature of the Endless only other immortal beings can truly have a relationship or understanding of them, Hob is perfect because we know he is simply a man before anything else. He gives us a great grounding point as the reader and equally allows for setups, like Shakespeare and much later even gives us a glimpse of the modern day. Wonderful video, wonderful character.
I think its even more interesting is that Dream being the keeper of stories and past and future ideas he still had no idea he ever needed a friend, not looking at himself objectively. Gaiman does an excellent job making what are essentially equivalent to greek gods (which is appropriate because of Morpheus’ name) but having them go through character development.
The relationship between Dream and Hob is unique, but not unusual. Morpheus has had many sexual relationships with mortals throughout time, therefore he does feel loneliness and seeks companionship. But he is Endless and beyond our comprehension.
Their total interaction time from past 700 years didn't exceed more than 15 minutes and managed to build an everlasting friendship with that short amount of chat time.
While the graphic novel itself is Fantastic, I've always enjoyed this sub plot the most! I've loved the idea of immortality for as long as I can remember...I've wondered about the pros and cons and I really loved how this little aside really distillates those arguments. Gaiman is just unmatched in his story telling, even in small little bits like this... this story could have been one of his many award winning short stories, but it's nestled within this greater story! Fantastic! Great video, very enjoyable and well presented!
I loved when Hob said, "I've learned a great deal from my mistakes, but that doesn't stop me from making them." Powerful, but simple statement. Really encapsulates the humanity of Hob, and sort of smashes this idea that "a long-life is equivalent to wisdom." No. It just means we have more time to make mistakes and learn from them, but there's so much we will never understand. Just like after 400+ years, Hobs still has so many unanswered questions about Dream. There's just so much we will never know, and that is okay...because it isn't our job to understand everything. We just need to discover what life means to us and do what we can to improve with the time that we have.
It’s amazing how they can even maintain a friendship by meeting only for a few hours max (they don’t take their meeting past drinks at a pub) once a century.

@@HeadsAndTales South Slavic (at least Croatian and Bosnian, according to Wikipedia). I don't mean it as a critique, just wanted to make specify it further.
@@tymondabrowski12 Yes, you are right! I cast too wide of a net by tagging Slavic on it. It's only South Slavic languages that apply as you said. Thanks for clarifying. :)
@@HeadsAndTales Later I realized I was wrong too. "Nada" in Polish is used in a phrase "nada się", which is a verb meaning "will fit/suit" (It will suit this situation - usually it means something akin to "good enough", not really "great for this purpose"). It's rarer without "się" but it can happen and then it means "will transmit/emit", like "TV nada ten program"/"TV will emit this program" or "Oficer nada komunikat"/"Officer will transmit the message". (It still has no similarity to "nadzieja"/hope, though). Sorry for a long digression here.
Great video and great analisis of how we can develop a character in a passive storyline which even if it doesnt progress the plot ads many layer to the character and its motivations.
Thank you for sharing this, and for the time and effort you put into it. I found it quite enjoyable. *Hob Gadling's* story is one of my favorites. . .Certainly one of the more memorable stories in the series. Be well. 🙋🏼♂️
its a master work of subversion of the often used trope about humanity cannot handle immortality. and instead being teach a lesson for seeking immortality, Hob taught the Godlike being about companionship instead.
I haven’t watched the live action series, but I loved this relationship in the books as well. It simply showed how little Dream truly understood humans and those with the indomitable will to live.

Hob Gadling needs a Spinoff! even if its a limited series, his tv series would be highly rated if written correctly someone should reach out to Netflix and make this happen
I didn't love the comic or this show, OTHER than the friendship between dream & hob. I think it's a lovely graphic novel & show, just not my cup of tea. But this one relationship was so beautiful and so authentic despite their ocean of differences. Brilliant.
Hmmm.... The concept that the other Endless do not need "companionship" is wrong. It's more that you don't see it for each of them in the comics or the show and that what they need for their realm is different. Death does spend a day a century living a life because she needs to experience life to appreciate her part in it. Destruction abandoned his realm and went walkabout going places and trying other things out and in the comics is found trying to paint (an act of creation). Delirium has always been with people, her trouble wandering the world is how often she is observed. The twins, Despair and Desire are the questionable ones especially as Despair has already changed aspects once, I suspect they haven't been introduced to a fulcrum to balance their realm against the universe (at least in the comics that I've read). I'm hoping that there'll be two more seasons, the second to cover the Key to the Gates of Hell and Dreams relationship with his family, the third to cover the full change of the Aspect of an Endless.
I loved that Destruction kept trying all these creative hobbies but was wretched at all of them - because he was Destruction, not Creation. Yet he kept on trying.
Honestly I had a lot of issues with the show mainly that they were so desperate to mark checkboxes that the show is set in a universe where straight people are more rare than winning the lottery. But the part I absolutely loved the most was Sandman and this dude. See when their relationship started and sandman gave the guy immortality, I figured.. here we fkn go again. Another dumb fkn preachy bs bit about how horrible and bad it is to want to live for ever. How boring it would get. Oh, how you'd suffer and beg to stop living, beg for death... But then we see the guy, get richer every millennia until he loses it all and hits rock bottom. Lives on the street goes so hungry he would have died multiple times over if it wasn't for his immortality. And he's telling all his horrible suffering to the sandman and sandman is smugly smiling like "got'em". But then when the sandman asks if he wants it to end, the guy is like... the fk? Are you insane? Of course I don't want it to end. And that .. ladies and gentlemen... that is the real truth of human existence. All those anti immortality arguments are idiotic and so insanely flawed. So then why do we say sht like "omg that would get so boring.. why would you want to live for ever" .. Boring fkn how? Tech is advancing exponentially, new stuff is happening, being discovered, invented and created all the time. There are billions of people to meet. There are innumerous amount of places to visit and they will all change beyond recognition by the time you visit them again. Plus you never have to worry, you can do everything you want in life. You can put hours into a hobby and not feel guilty. You don't ever have to worry you won't have the time to travel, to meet people, to write that book or try that game. People who say they wouldn't want to live forever are coping super hard with the fact that they are going todie or just have an insanely limited imagination and don't understand the possibilities that no longer aging gives us
Sometimes i rewatch this with the sound off, and ad-lib pretend its robert smith pf The Cure and Trent reznor of nine inch nails debating over what company manufactured the best synthesizers. While my cats pretend im sane, because i buy the food.
I think that Hob would have seeked death if his immortality didn't make him young, like he will get older, his body shutting down but being unable to die, he gets older and older till he becomes like a living corpse. Immortality wouldn't be fun if you are not young biologically.
I honestly loved Hob. I'm tired of the trope of immortals getting tired and depressed from life, or being inherently evil just because they want to live forever. Just by mere probability there should be at least one person who wants to be immortal not because they're evil, they simply must love life so much they wouldn't get tired of it, at least for a very, veeery long time.
Immortality isn't all that's its cracked up to be. Mathematical probability states that the longer an Immortal walks the earth, the more the possibility of being trapped "forever" reaches 100%
I have always thought of Hob Gadling as one of the most fascinating issues of The Sandman, if not the very best. Hob humanizes Dream. He . . . takes Dream from ethereal essence to grounded sentient life form. Well, maybe just a little. Not sure I'm phrasing this right.
Just imagine what Lucifer may have gonr through. Watching eons of people, angels go before him. Even Lucifer may have seen Dream the others as children once. Imagine if this guy challenged Lucifer to this test instead of Dream
Should this have been ep1? The only downside of doing that is that you should not put your best episode right away. But then gain, the best episode almost feels like a filler.
Sandman's sister Death is a big part of concluding the mini arc of him finding his tools and losing his purpose. Hob is an extension of that character development. I think the positioning makes sense here.
Dream was imprisoned with a bad hair style, then was released with a $1000 haircut from LA.😂😂😂 This silly ass series that takes all of its esthetical cues from the Twilight saga, is SO EFFING SILLY!!! GODDAMN MODERN MOVIES/SERIES ABSOLUTELY SUCK ASS!!

Nada doesn't mean anything in Polish, for example (and doesn't even sound like anything, so it isn't even a case of "it doesn't sound correct but it reminds me of this word that has this meaning").
Greatest episode ever. Love that Hob is always in brown earthly colors and Dream is always in his iconic black. Hob keeps Dream grounded. 🖤🤎
Oh, I like that! Great observation!
Great video and great analisis of how we can develop a character in a passive storyline which even if it doesnt progress the plot ads many layer to the character and its motivations.
Thank you! Happy you enjoyed it. :)
This was a very good analysis. Thank you for this information. It mentioned what I saw while watching the series.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Brilliant take on this ❤
Thank you! Happy you enjoyed it. :))
Thank you for sharing this, and for the time and effort you put into it. I found it quite enjoyable. *Hob Gadling's* story is one of my favorites. . .Certainly one of the more memorable stories in the series.
Be well. 🙋🏼♂️
Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. :)
An interesting character study you've done here. Thanks for your take, much appreciated buddy.
Thank you for watching! Happy you enjoyed it. :)
I think I’ve forgotten most of the show now, time for a rewatch!!
its a master work of subversion of the often used trope about humanity cannot handle immortality. and instead being teach a lesson for seeking immortality, Hob taught the Godlike being about companionship instead.
I kinda hoped that at the end, Sandman would open up to Hob about where he'd been (i.e. telling Hob about the last 100 years, for a change)
"Death is a mug's game"
the only completely successful episode of the show, very well done.
Nice job this is a great breakdown
I love Hob’s life-affirming immortality!
Your videos are great!
I am still waiting for your upcoming videos on the rest of the episodes.
Thank you! Working on a new video. Should be uploaded next week. :)
This was my favorite part of the show!!! 😊😊😊😊
I haven’t watched the live action series, but I loved this relationship in the books as well. It simply showed how little Dream truly understood humans and those with the indomitable will to live.
Nice to see the Sandman show getting some love, very interesting video.
Thank you!! Sandman doesn't get enough love on this platform, in my opinion.
I'm so glad they had this episode in the series. It was great.
I just stumbled onto your channel. Even though I am not a subscriber. I appreciated your work and wish you the best for the future.
Keep doing the good work. 👍
Thank you!
Hob Gadling was one or my favorite characters when I started reading through the Sandman series. 😎👍🏻
Beautiful synopsis - thank you!
🙏🏻💔🙏🏽
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching! :)
Great video. I don't have anything of importance to say just wanted to spread some support for an up and coming youtuber. Keep on doing what you're doing. Hope to see you at 1k subs in a few days.
Thank you so much!! I think it will take more than a few days, but definitely looking forward to that milestone. :))
@@HeadsAndTales You're very welcome! I think it will happen sooner than later. Your videos have popped up on my algorithm and was surprised how few subscribers you have. If the algorithm keeps favouring, you the views will definitely come :)
Hob Gadling needs a Spinoff! even if its a limited series, his tv series would be highly rated if written correctly someone should reach out to Netflix and make this happen
Hob is necessary, dreams don't exist without hope. Have wondered if Hope might be the youngest of the Eternals.
Hob was my favorite part of the series
6:31 the wandering jew is the phantom stranger
What a great analogy
Definitely a wonderful part of the Sandman mythos, and as well-adapted as the rest of the series.
Want to consider leaving a spoiler warning? Some of us have only seen the show😅
not gonna lie, this kind of immortality would be a pretty sweet gift 😃
I fell in love with Hob at first sight ❤❤❤
oh! he was one of the guys in the hateful 8! the guy pretending to be the hangman! I knew I recognised him
Honestly I had a lot of issues with the show mainly that they were so desperate to mark checkboxes that the show is set in a universe where straight people are more rare than winning the lottery.
People who say they wouldn't want to live forever are coping super hard with the fact that they are going todie or just have an insanely limited imagination and don't understand the possibilities that no longer aging gives us
👏👏👏
Hob being like the Methos of The Sandman univers.
Looking forward to Three September storyline getting adapted
best episode
frankly the graphic novel series was better overall for the writing, but hob and morpheus in the netflix adaptation was how i always imagined it to be
Well met sir
Sometimes i rewatch this with the sound off, and ad-lib pretend its robert smith pf The Cure and Trent reznor of nine inch nails debating over what company manufactured the best synthesizers.
While my cats pretend im sane, because i buy the food.
As long as the cats are fed, they’re probably all for it too!
I mean, Dream is literally David Bowie
@@JoshuaKevinPerry thats weird, because I always he had more of a Robert Smith of The Cure look going on
Although its been 600 years since dream met hob, theyve technically only had a few hours of interactions in all those centuries
I think that Hob would have seeked death if his immortality didn't make him young, like he will get older, his body shutting down but being unable to die, he gets older and older till he becomes like a living corpse. Immortality wouldn't be fun if you are not young biologically.
In DC lore the Wandering Jew is most likely The Phantom Stranger.
"It's Joana ConstenTEEN"
"Really, I don't care"😃
Just imagine what Lucifer may have gonr through. Watching eons of people, angels go before him. Even Lucifer may have seen Dream the others as children once. Imagine if this guy challenged Lucifer to this test instead of Dream
Imagine living more than 500 years and not become a billionaire?
Hob has been there all along
Maybe the real friends are the hob we made along the way
I wanna see how Hob is doing now
Well, read the comics and you will know.
This is the only thing they adapted correctly.
The show it´s a frame by frame from the comics. What are you talking. The comic and show are frame by frame, nothing it´s wasted in both.
Complaining about English food? Noway! Does he not know about jellied eel? Stargazy pies? 😂
Death grants immortality, isn't that a bit of an oxymoron?
Should this have been ep1? The only downside of doing that is that you should not put your best episode right away. But then gain, the best episode almost feels like a filler.
Sandman's sister Death is a big part of concluding the mini arc of him finding his tools and losing his purpose. Hob is an extension of that character development. I think the positioning makes sense here.
A spin off is required
That'd be amazing, but unfortunately highly unlikely.
damn death is not a hot goth babe
nvm it was great
Dyings a mugs game
Can I be Hob, please.
Omg. Is he. Is he... Saint Germaine?
👍
That sounds like the phantom stranger the story about the Jewish male woundering around.
5140 Zieme Track
Dream was imprisoned with a bad hair style, then was released with a $1000 haircut from LA.😂😂😂
This silly ass series that takes all of its esthetical cues from the Twilight saga, is SO EFFING SILLY!!!
GODDAMN MODERN MOVIES/SERIES ABSOLUTELY SUCK ASS!!
