Hey Food Box HQ Family! Today we're checking out Tovala to give you our updated review of this beast of a smart oven.
We've used both the Tovala Generation 1 and Generation 2 for over 3 years at this point and we've been super impressed with how well it works.
A few things we love...
- It's very simple to use. You can control it through the oven or app. But we usually just scan whatever we want to cook and press start.
- Since it's a steam oven, it cooks food way better than a microwave but a lot quicker than a traditional oven. It's the best of both worlds.
- It's taken the place of our microwave for 99% of the times we want to heat things up. It doesn't work well for soups!
A few things we don't love...
- It's not huge so you can really only cook one meal at a time. This means it might not be a good option for big families.
- It's a bit of an investment at over $100. However, it costs less than many other similar smart oven options out there.
- It allows you to scan the barcode of a ton of frozen foods and will automatically pre-program the oven to the best settings. Occasionally it won't have the frozen items info when we go to scan it. Also, sometimes we'll need to throw the item back in the oven for a few more minutes. It's not the end of the world but just thought we should mention it!
At the end of the day, this little smart steam oven does an exceptional job at cooking food quickly and surprisingly well. We use it for everything from toast to chicken breasts and it has cooked it all perfectly.

@@johnraumjr6383 I have enjoyed them. Their customer service seems to be quick to address any issues if you have any. I believe they are better tasting and better than the other companies delivered meals. Even my kiddos like them. Not all but most.
can you have two of the same meals or a meal for two? I am interested in ordering this system but I would want my husband and I to have the same meals.
Just got my oven delivered today since I didn’t have any food orders shipping to to me till Wednesday I ran to Trader Joe’s today.

So far, tovala has been the best option for us, it is like home made meals but easier. Besides, their oven is soooo useful, I use it to broil cheesesteakes, make toast, toasted sandwiches, etc.
I wonder if you have to cook longer at a higher altitude?
Do you think it's worth it to buy with their Prime Day deal going on now at half price? Are the meals organic?
That's definitely the lowest price I've ever seen them go down to! It may require you to subscribe to their meal delivery service for a set time period to activate that price. The oven itself is definitely worth way more than what that sale price is though!
What do you think about this in a 2 person household. Do they have options for meals that serve 2? I really want this, but I don't want to wait 15 minutes between cooking two separate meals for my husband and I. It would be so convenient if they had a warming section to put the first meal in while the second cooks....I suppose I could just keep it in the microwave until the second is done. Idk. I'm torn.
The oven will fit 4 trays at a time. So you can cook 2 meals at the same time. But they have to be the same meal, since the QR code sets a cooking sequence specific to each meal.
@@fredk1256 thank you! So there's a setting on it to tell it we are cooking two servings of that meal? Or you just scan it twice or something?
@@meganwoehl5277 you just have to cook 2 of the exact same meals. You just put the 4 tins in the oven (4 will fit) scan one meal and it will cook both, same Temperature and time. You can’t cook 2 different meals at the same time since they would have different time and temperature. Just order pairs of meals.
Thank you for this info! I was considering this for my elderly parents but didn’t want them to cook meals separately and they would certainly be fine eating the same meal. Much appreciated!

Could you comment on portion sizes? The portions seemed really small on other vids i have seen... I'm curious what other peoples thoughts are on it?
The portion sizes on their meal delivery service is in line with portion sizes with most premade meal delivery services I've tried. Here are some more pictures of our meals: foodboxhq.com/reviews/tovala/ . The meals are fairly filling but I just wish they had more sides. Usually there's a veggie (like broccoli) or a carb (like potatoes).

Yep, you can cook 2 meals at a time. It can’t fit any more than that though.

Looks like that offer only works if you sign up for a certain amount of meals too.

Steelhead trout is that color and it's better than salmon. Steelhead is often mistaken for salmon. They both belong to the same family.
I love the idea of pre measured food but wish these companies could come up with less packaging. I don’t need individual aluminum trays I can use my own containers. Recipe cards could be put online.

$13 a serving is too much. I feed my family healthy, filling meals for about $2 a serving...
They have meals around $9-$10 too but I can agree that it’s not cheap

It's not very vegetarian/pescatarian friendly. Out of countless meat meals, you'll have four or five (at the very most) meals to choose from, or should I say forced to choose from. If you only order four meals weekly, you only have those four to choose from. You're screwed if you're a vegetarian and want more than four meals weekly. I like more of a choice. If you're a person that can eat the same thing week in week out. You'll be fine. I wanted to love it because it's only my wife and me.
There is an easy solution, eat the way we are designed to eat, we are omnivores.
@@hewster1 I'll eat the way I want to eat. I'm not a die hard pescatarian. But if I want to eat vegetables and fish by choice it's my business. Eat what you want to eat. And believe me when I tell you, I will not tell you how and what to eat.
