Working memory is something that can be improved, I am an architecture student for ~2 years now and with all the floor plans and sections they forced me to make, when I enter space I just try to imagine what the floor plan would look like and I memorize the whole space. It also doesn't require much attention span, when I am tired with one part of the room/building I go to some other part and let my imagination loose. Now I try to memorize every place I visit for fun instead of memorizing texts (which I have always sucked at, but with this I enjoy it so I am improving exponentially xd)

    • @BlijfEric
      @BlijfEric 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@sansamman4619, although you are right that working memory can be trained, it is actually long term (LT from here on) memory you are talking about. Working memory is memory regained within 30-60 seconds. Any memory longer than that basically is LT memory.
To explain ('m a 2yr psychology student enrolling into uni this year): by visualizing the floorplans and memorizing the space, you condition your working memory to be safed in LT memory. The deeper level of internalisation, thus the more you try to condition information more deeply, the stronger your long term memory is of given information.
Basically you use already safed LT memory to relate it to new information that is given. This way your brain links a certain memory to another, already existing, LT memory.

The most important thing is doing a variety of mental exercises. I was really sharp in high school when I was running cross country, doing normal school work, playing an instrument, reading a lot, writing a bit, learning a language, programming, working with my hands and machinery on a robotics team (FIRST). Lately as an adult I've let some of these things go and have noticed a real decline in how "sharp" my brain feels over the past couple years. And then when I have a week where I find time to do as many of these things as possible, plus the meditation practice I've picked up, I feel much more like myself.

I have ADHD which is a big part of my short term memory loss. Years ago I used to do mindfulness exercises which didn't seem to help me. I'm considering meds at this point because it's affecting my ability to work effectively but thankfully I always have a strong will to learn so I'm constantly learning programming, new languages or just widening my knowledge in world history and nutritional science. I like to think that constantly learning things and regularly exercises will help me in the long term. There is also a lot of scientifically conducted evidence that constantly learning through your whole life can help prevent or delay alzheimers disease.

They can never have the brainpower I have. However, once I learned how to use my brain power, I started to train myself to project confidence(even if I didn't have it at the moment) and now I also have leadership abilities and the characteristics that go with it. Some of the concerns that it's addressing are that a lot of the treatment that exists now either only trains your memory for a specific tasks, or actually trains short term memory (which isn't as helpful for ADHD/ADD)

We know what works and what doesn't, and yes, spoiler, apps on a phone do little to nothing to sharpen your consciousness or awareness. Look into how folks with head trauma are rehabbed, a lot to learn there.

I think the wobble board juggling is a great idea. Reminds me of hooking up a wii balance board to my PC and using it for FPS movement. Relearning how to move in game while still using my hands for interaction was quite a thing. Absolutely on point about caffeine too. Whenever I plan to do some complicated programming I try to be sure that I only have a little caffeine or none in the preceding 24 hours. It can be a great tool to use as a source of stress when trying to train to overcome stress related performance issues, but it is not an aid in normal circumstances.

Hey Bioneer, this is a copy and paste from the "Hidden Power: How to get strong without getting big" video you did 2 years ago:
Hey Bioneer, been watching you for a few months- you're a real inspiration and seem to be one of the realest fitness TH-camrs and one that really knows what he's talking about.
I had a video request and I think a lot of people would really appreciate it too. I'm 19 years old and at the moment I look like I don't really go to the gym. Not so much that I'm fat or anything but I look more like the skinny fat physique. I bring this up because I feel as if this video talks more about if you already had some muscle on you and I know that in order to have that farmer strength be really effective (to the point where you're as powerful as the biggest bodybuilders) you need a decent amount of muscle already- like the point where people can tell that you go to the gym but at the same time you're not happy with your level of strength. What I'm saying is that I think the video is more for people that already have that muscle but just want to improve their control over what they have. Would you mind making a video on this same topic, the hidden power "farmer strength" but if one had to start from zero essentially? I would really appreciate it, as I would love to become an MMA fighter without being slowed down by my size, I'm 6 foot 3 190ish pounds for reference if that matters. Thanks Bioneer. You're the best.

Sorry for the rude comment, I sadly see this very often especially in fitness youtube: Someone wants to become the greatest fighter but overthinks what to do "first" before actually joining any kind of martial arts gym/dojo.
For your question I would have to say maximum strength also correlates with muscle size/hypertrophy. To become the ultimate beste fighting version of yourself you need to invest as many hours of deliberate practice (with many different sparring partners) as possible and if you can still allocate some time, invest this in basic strength training and repetition. As well as continue to learn in your "free" time about fighting in general. Being a good fighter is firstly dependent on experience and endurance, secondly on strength.

On the other hand, I still remember things that happened on a TV show I saw literally one time years later, or video games. I don't understand my brain, but there has to be a way to take advantage of that.
Been trying to think of ways to format the information in these ways to memorize it. Writing it down and personalizing it basically (which I became terrible at notes after school, not sure why).
    Lotta work ahead.😤
Really appreciate your work, very inspiring.👍
    Thank you.

Off the top of my head that would tell me that you should be finding a way to make things more photographic. I'd recommend using visual systems like mind palace, making up wacky scenes in your head, comparing things to in life objects, finding a news article on Google to help get a real world example, etc. Basically anything that paints an image In order to hold on to information better. For example when thinking of integers in mathematics I like to think of the 0 as a portal that carries us between negative and positive numbers (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) for me creating one small image or scene like quality is enough to boost retention and usually the brain will automatically fill any remaining information.

One thing that I can remember for sure about what made me have a nice memory back when I was a kid was literally playing memories games with my father and reading thoses colourful kids books and trying to remember the colors. Doing this over the time really made my memory get better since I'd exercise it since a young age. As the years passed I still exercise my memory with cards and games like mahjong (I'm kind of addicted to this game)
And I can fell the benefits of theses exercises since today and it improved my studies at astronomical levels because of the way I can hold information.

I will start using your app to improve my boxing. Here is how I will use it:
    Every square is a punch,
    red square = jab
    white square = cross
green square = a punch/movement that is different each time
I would count how many jabs and crosses I do + the times I did something other than jabbing and crossing.
+ I am pretty good at math and since I have no one to tell me "16*8" or something, I just solve equations that take 7+ steps to solve.
One more thing, I believe diving and swimming can also be a very effective way to make your working memory better by:
Improving your stroke technique, you need to be aware of your movements and remember where your limbs are and where you will have to put them next.
I also have fun with going to the middle of the pool, holding my breath and moving around, spinning, flipping all the while being extremely aware of my body and where my body was (not as much with where I will put my body next because almost all of is spontaneous, when I run out of breath I try to think of cool ways to come up and take a breath).
This helps me a lot for boxing, but I must say I am bad at basketball and football, my depth perception for anything further than two arm lengths is stupidly bad, I am only good with things that require awareness of where I am and not some fast flying thing going by (I especially suck at goalkeeping)... Hope I helped in some way

This is genius! And actually it has some similarities to something I'll be talking about soon! Stay tuned 😁 (You may find that using sounds instead of visuals is more practical for boxing - stay tuned on that too!)
Also, I think you're right about swimming. It's complex proprioceptive movement!

So basically dualNback is like exercising your wrists. You'll get better milage out exercises that also include the wrists, but are targeted for bigger parts of your arm overall. In the same way, our brains need more complex exercises. Where multiple regions all carry some role in it.

My score is only by 5-n back. But my digit span is on good days by ten and even more. Sometimes I can form enormous blocks of information and can juggle complex algebra in my head when I'm lying in my bed. I was tested with Raven professional at 135 IQ. But my dual-n back scores are quit poor. Maybe I'm very special but I also think working memory and of course dual-n back is not the final answer.

I love that you are experimenting with this stuff. But I think you got some things wrong:
Intelligence and working memory are highly correlated, so much that some intelligence research suggests that the two are basically the same.
But ADD and ADHD have NO correlation to IQ. Further more focus and IQ are not that deeply interlinked. They are tow diffrent important mental capacities.
The tasks you desinged are concentration tasks.
If you would find a way to improve overall working memory you would find a way to improve IQ. So keep grindindig.
To maybe add something usefull: Maybe it's worthwhile experimenting a little with daydreaming. There aslo seems to be a connection between IQ and REM-Sleep

The world, as anyone can see right now, is not headed in a good direction...
YOU, whoever is reading this, and I NEED to take ACTION in REAL LIFE! It is not enough to know what is going on in the world, or even to understand what is needed to fix it. We must all take personal responsibility and fix it ourselves! That is the ONLY way things can change. It must be a change from the bottom up. What are YOU doing in your life to leave institutionalized systems and not just support, but CREATE the world you want to live in? It is not enough to just post things or share videos online, OR even protest and rally in real life. We MUST form physical communities. We cannot hope to get rid of a system that we are dependent on! Self/interpersonal reliance IS CRITICAL.
Is there anyone else out there? Does anybody else realize that...
    - Natural Law governs the universe?
    - the Federal Reserve System is fraudulent?
    - that politics is all theatrics, and that politicians are absolutely compromised?
    - that the world is LEAD (not controlled) by evil freaks?
    - that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is harmful living beings? Yes, even if it is non-ionizing.
    - that there is more to reality than the physical things we can see and touch?
    - that humans are frugivores by nature and the fruitarian diet is OUR species-specific diet?
    - that history is nearly all fabricated and based on lies? (WW2 for example)
    - that the rulers of this world understand human psychology VERY well, and we are programmed to be fearful, apathetic, rule followers?
    - that secret societies ARE REAL and holders of very valuable knowledge, which YOU can learn if you seek it?
Please respond to this comment if you are even somewhat on the same page or if you have any input. We must organize. We must act. Let's get this ball rolling!

May I recommend checking out the research into the effects of computer games (first person shooters, Real Time Strategy etc.) on brain performance. There is a lot of research that suggests that not only do computer games improve working memory, visual acuity, and problem solving, but they also improve stress handling, and a whole host of other things too. My wife is Visually Impaired, and has found computer games have helped with her day to day life, both from a stress relief perspective, and from a visual aspect (she can now see far more range of colours quickly, than she could before). The complex worlds that computer games give you, require almost as much processing as the real world, and with some games, actually require quicker reaction times. There is an increasing volume of research suggesting that computer games can be used as part of a healthy lifestyle to drastically improve not only your physical performance, but also a huge range of other things. There is also a large volume of research into the beneficial effects of gaming in treating PTSD and brain injury through computer games.
