When Sophie Allison says to our friends and coworkers assembled around the desk, "We're finally doin' it," she really means it. A little less than exactly three years ago, Allison had just released the wonderful Color Theory as Soccer Mommy; it's an album that marked significant strides in her songwriting and production. A big year was doubtless in store for her and her bandmates... and we all know how that went. The band's visit to the Tiny Desk, scheduled for March 30, 2020, was the first of many to be canceled due to the pandemic.
That time in history required a lot of lemonade-making from all of us; we at NPR Music and beyond were lucky that, not too long after lockdown had sunk its teeth in, Soccer Mommy was the first to record a Tiny Desk (Home) performance for us. It was an early, much-needed sign that life might still be waiting for us on the other end. But, as we've learned well, there's no replacement for proximity.
With all of that indelibly in mind, it was particularly lovely and emotional welcoming Sophie, guitarist Julian Powell, keyboard player Rodrigo Avendano, bassist Nickolas Widener and percussionist Rollum Haas, finally, to the Tiny Desk. Their four-song set, with work from each era of Soccer Mommy's catalog, is beautifully performed and contoured. Welcome back to your debut, Soccer Mommy.

Pleased to see the first artist who did a Tiny Home Desk during the pandemic finally get to do a proper one now. That stripped back version of Shotgun was really chill, love it.
Ayo Mr. White you really are shredding on that bass
Now that was a good one eheh
😂
jesse, we have to make sweet licks jesse
always glad to see fantano get some stage time on bass
came here for this comment
Circle the drain got me through the pandemic and gave voice to my depression. I’m so grateful for this artist!
unbelievably good tune, I never get bored of it
Yes!! Circle the Drain & Yellow Is the Color of Her Eyes were pivotal during the pandemic 🔁 Hope you are feeling somewhat better these days
this song was so important to me all through out covid
Couldn’t say it any better
Running helped me get through the pandemic, and I listened to Circle the Drain and Yellow is the Color of Her Eyes every time.
her ear for melody is out of this world. one of my favorite songwriters of this generation
0:00 shotgun
5:33 circle the drain
10:30 newdemo
15:20 still clean
If only PBS put in effort like that to put in chapters and timestamps like youtube has had for 2-3 years now
Thank you.
Thank you! It’s incredible that NPR still doesn’t have the common sense to break videos up into chapters, an incredibly easy thing to do.
And Harry Potter wasn't too bad in fhe keyboard either
Her melodies, cadence, and tone have a unique ability to capture a feeling of nostalgia that never actually existed. Like if you wiped my memory only of where I heard her music first, I would swear up and down with certainty I listened to it as a kid in my bedroom on some headphones plugged into a CD player and surrounded by my 90's stuff, with a bit of that childhood angst and that type of sadness mixed with hopefulness you feel as a kid before you really have a reason to
THIS
Captured the exact feeling their music gives me
So wild how true this is. Never listened but instantly felt like I had for years
Sounds like the Brazilian word, “saudade”
Great to see Fantano finally playing bass again.
Weird I thought it was Walter Heisenberg
@@TweEkc Same
I seriously thought it was him for a few moments.
love how they're all wearing soccer mommy shirts
Man her voice is so clear and in tune, in love with Circle the Drain, always have been always will
color theory was a very important album in my life when it released, im so happy to see soccer mommy get the npr rep they deserve!
Even the small things like the way she pronounces “want me” and “shotgun” are reasons why her vocals are so incredible. So unique! Love this band.
Never heard of them but was instantly mesmerized by her vocals. Wow
Same
bro thats soccer mommy bro
You have to check out her debut album “clean”. I can listen to that album without skipping anything.
love that they're all wearing soccer mommy merch :')
Her “thanks y’all” at the end of every song🥹i loved every second of this. some persons just have a voice that makes you feel calm inside. they could be singing the most depressing lyrics, it doesn’t matter. the first song i heard from Soccer Mommy was Circle the Drain. i found it during the pandemic (are we still in a pandemic btw??) couldn’t stop playing it for weeks🫶🏽
this whole set hits nice in the morning with a cup of coffee
Gonna give this a try in the morning
I m doing this now
Shotgun is one of the best songs ever. I have had it on repeat since it launched. I love how honest this band is. I feel like there is a lot less pretense in the way they present both themselves and the music.
Saw her in concert in October and she sounds even better live ❤
she was the opener for Vampire Weekend at red rocks and i did not want them to leave the stage. they're awesome
Obligatory Heisenburg on bass comment....
So cool to see her playing Still Clean on NPR again with the same guitar! It sounds so amazing with that synth added too
They have a nostalgic 90's sound to them. Sounds awesome!
Two seconds after she started singing i knew she had a beautiful voice. Definitely looking for this group on spotify
Sophie Allison is the best of the best of the best! Her music has gotten me through some really tough times as well as really happy times.
I really wish she did Bones. I absolutely love that song from her latest album...
The bubble noises in Circle The Drain are choice
Been waiting for Soccer Mommy to come back to do a in person show🤞🏻this was so lovely. Thank you Tiny Desk❤️❤️
Circle the Drain is in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Love this performance
I am sensitive when it comes to music. I get bored easily and also stressed out when something bothers me about a song. Soccer Mommy never stresses me out, i like her style.
Besides a poor meme-joke that im a little bit ashamed of. Listening to your music really makes the listener feel something deep inside. Without that passion you're pouring into it, that couldn't be achieved, so keep on keeping on.
Love this performance!!! Great music, the care put into the performance is impressive, Sophie's vocal's are so melodic and emoted perfectly, well done! I'd love to see them live!!!!!! Thank you Tiny Desk--- gonna search out their original performance now, great music!
Still Clean gave me goosebumps. My goodness that girl is awesome.
Wow she has a beautiful voice and the music is really good. Nice vibe l love it .
yeah, too bad for the name 😬
The name is as creative as yours 😆
@@dertythegrower oh ....ok
love that they are all wearing Soccer Mommy shirts.. sounds great!
Never heard her before but her music is so beautiful ♥
I’m a hiphop head but she’s dope. I’d definitely stick around at a festival.
Got any favourite hip hop records from last year? I struggle to find hip hop I love, but I love Dijon and Mkgee
@@joeboonmusic4004 Jid, Smino, Saba, Denzel Curry, westside gunn and ofc kendrick all released great records last year, and more im probably forgetting. 2022 was a great year for hip hop
@@davidskoglund1406 sweet thanks dude! Always liked Denzel Curry, didn’t know he had a new record out!
I'm surprised how the majority of these comments are very sarcastic/mean. Until you can do a better job, shut up. Thank you NPR for the bands you choose for these tiny desk concerts. I never would have heard of most of them without your programs. It's an honor to be chosen.
It's always like that in early comment section, just give it a day for normal folk to downvote miserable morons and pathetic trolls into oblivion and it will look civilized again.
Wow that mic is so sensitive it's picking up her strumming! 🙃
I'm enjoying hearing these live, stripped-down versions. You know they are good songs when they hold up so beautifully without the studio production.
Man, Circle the Drain is such an upbeat, optimistic, happy song if you don't understand English.
Hard to tell, but are they all wearing Soccer Mommy t-shirts? 😂 I’m super excited to see them open for The National in June.
so happy she played shotgun such a beautiful song
What a sweet, sweet voice and pure talent on display. One of the best Tiny Desks ever.
Been to three of her concerts, safe to say I love her music. So glad they got to do this!
Used to listen to soccer mommy in middle school and I'm in college now! Crazy to see the band on NPR.
Color Theory got me though 2020! I got to see this group live last month and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Sophie is an incredible lyricist.
color theory was sooo underrated and seeing the comments here, it seems like it's an album that get people through 2020 and early pandemic so much... i'm so curious on their live set though! hope to be able to see them live too soon
I loved this entire performance, especially this rendition of Still Clean. I saw her perform here in DC a few months back, and during her performance of Still Clean you could hear a pin drop… she completely captivated the entire room.
So glad this had somgs from all her albums. I was thinking recently that sophie has achieved such great things in a time span from 2016 till now. An important period in my life too. It's like a journey she was along with me all that time. She also played some of my favourite tunes of her :')
Beautiful poetry around and around good music. Stay human.
Saw what you did there...
Her voice is so calming
Always good to see Walter White on bass.
tbh, I put command+F to find and like on this comment
Great players/ tones. Shotgun is the best song of the last decade… apart from Space Engineer, To Be Loved.
Her voice is beautiful 🖤🖤
Her voice so cool😊
I have written over 400 songs. I really want to play here before I die
THIS IS THE BESTMORNING EVER THANKYOU
Haven't followed tiny desk in a year or two, because of all the horrible pretentious artists they promote. But happy I checked in to catch this one.
Heisenberg turned heisenbass
Only downside was seeing one of my favourite drummers over the last 20 years sitting there twiddling knobs and looking bored
drummer seems bored, would have been awesome that he played a stripped down drum kit instead of a machine and an egg. Still sounds great
Love Soccer Mommy! Sounds like her guitar isn’t plugged in though, probably from how they mixed it
It’s unplugged show
@@Mark-ku9bn Lol they're definitely all plugged in, even her acoustic. She is just playing really soft to match the vibe I think.
Exceptional bass playing.
Still Clean was perfect.
Soccer Mommy is such a special artist.
they even have Walter White playing Bass 🤔🤔
Her voice just does something to me
Dude is playing a St Vincent signature, wow
ahhh why are the vocals mixed so loud
saw her live up and center and it was the most amazing experience ever. she spoke to my soul and my body basically touched the ceiling. would recommend everyone to do it once in their life
She's really something... A joy to watch and listen to. Greetings from Beirut, WOW
Wow i loveeee this version of shotgun ❤
Shotguns have shells, not bullets! Why does that tiny detail bother me so much!?
Some shotguns, as the anti-riot ones here in Chile fire pellets, which are fairly more similar to a bullet than a shell, one might say.
A horrible example, but an accurate one.
I’ve always really enjoyed Soccer Mommy, but the bullet in a shotgun line always throws me off. We’re talking shot shells here!
Shout out to drummer Rollum Haas! Soooo proud of you, friend! 🥳🥳🥳🥳
So we have this great performance on Tiny Desk, Mega Mango kickin' it on Audiotree, and KEXP showcasing the Lithuanian loveliness of Duo Ruut . . . all in the same week! Anyone who thinks that creative musical artistry doesn't exist on TH-cam is definitely NOT paying attention! Thanks to you all! 🥰
Anyone ask?
You named all the places I get new music from. The Trifecta!
love soccer mommy, found them super early bc they're local to me and have loved the evolution ever since. big W
Walter White on bass.
Anthony Fantano on bass
Love her so much. Been an amazing show both times I've seen her. I know this is pedantic, but "shotgun" drives me nuts though-- shotguns don't shoot bullets but shells which contain shot (ball bearings). When they do shoot something like a bullet, it's called a slug.
slug in a shotgun wouldnt hit the same would it tho
I imagine this is what the cool kids table is like
Love this the more times I hear it.
my favourite band through the pandemic and now even out of it ❤
Really nice seeing Fantano on the bass
This was so crisp! Incredibly tight-knit group, thank you!!
Weird that the description doesn’t mention the more recent release, “Sometimes, Forever”
Just clicked on this one at random and that first song was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
that smile at 4:09 😍
I was about time that soccer mommy got their well deserved gig at TD. I saw em live in Berlin a couple of years ago and they rocked! Great band with grreat songwriting♥
Love from Berlin♥
Yeassssss they deserve it, loved them for years
Awesome, enchanting sound. Love her voice too. Great stuff fr. Also how'd you get Mclovin on keys!?
I'm not gonna lie, I'm so glad that NPR Tiny Desks are back to live. The live (at home) ones were good to get us through the pandemic, but the mixing is so much better in this setting.
Please place ad breaks anywhere other than in the middle of songs. Avoidably amateur and ruins these true works of art.
Still Clean, amazing as always.❤️
This reminds me so much of Pedro the lion 😍😍😍
Saw them/her as support to The National in Dublin - very impressed and so was the audience 🥳
That first song made me a fan
yesss! Still clean one of my favourite songs ever. Such a great version. TY!!!!
I just realized that the hat Mac Miller was wearing in his tiny desk is on the shelf.
The lyrics to "newdemo" ... wow!!!
all wearing soccer mommy merch? represent!
finally!!! been waiting for this tiny desk too long!! love soccer mommy, color theory is definitely one of the albums of my life ❤
Also loving the fender amps, Leo wouldn't return my demos 😭😋🫒
