you need a guitarist you who doesn't play like he's trying to delicately trying to pet a llama.
Dude looks so uncomfortable and unsure of himself. Practice your parts and learn to play then and then press the strings down firmly and learn to hold your fingers properly on the fretboard. Look at Sophie, she is effortlessly pulling off his chord changes. You need to do that. This dude is like a "don't" video for how to play an electric guitar. Practice more, tune your guitar, find better tones or effects and play with more confidence.
He's out of tune, missing notes and is is using effects and tones that aren't complimenting Sophie's guitar tone of the bassist's.
On 'Your Dog' both Sophie's effects and the distortion on the bass works so well and this guy on lead is just ruining it.
I'd tell him to keep playing all weird and off-handed, but for christ's sake: form your own band and cultivate a sound based around chronic missteps. It could be cool but I agree it's not working here.
I think the guitarist has a great feel for the band's music. OK so he is rough around the edges-he reminds me of the 60's garage bands who were not polished but nevertheless created great original sounding music. I think the bass player is excellent and his playing really anchors the band.
I like the lead guitar player, he will improve with time -his current playing gives the band a more 60's garage band sound which I really like..

Saw them last night with Paramore, lead guitarist is not good, but it’s her boyfriend or fiancé or something. He did the same effect at the end of Scorpio Rising and I have no idea why. Such potential in this band that I feel like is ruined by the guy. Support from home, my guy
Its a reverse delay pedal on the last song. It literally takes your playing and reverses it. Alot of digital delay pedals offer it. Rhythm guitar is out of tune of flaw.

So Sophie's G or B was out on Flaw and she both heard it immediately and tried to compensate for it with vibrato. And everything but the full strums sounded awesome. Guitarboi just suuuuuucked all over the top of it because apparently noone ever explained keys to him or something?

As some of you just said, this was far from being their best gig, and that's a shame because her voice is wonderful and KEXP rocks. But please, wait until the last one... Scorpio Rising sounded exquisite!

Snail Mail has one now in case you didn’t know. I LOVE Snail Mail and Lush is like one of my favorite albums of all time, but just like this one, the KEXP is kinda disappointing. This one is due to the lead guitarist being just awful, the Snail Mail one just seems wayyyy too slow and drab. it’s like kinda depressing

Alright, let me just start out by saying I love Soccer Mommy. I think she writes some of the best songs I have heard in awhile. With that being said, this was not her (and the band's) best performance. I saw them live about a month ago and they sounded just like the record (which is perfect). Something about this performance is off and I'm pretty sure it's the tuning of the guitars.
Before anyone starts hating, let me just say this performance doesn't reflect how good she is. Go watch some other live SM videos because I promise she is awesome live.

She was fine. The guitarist was out of tune a lot. It may have been a new guitar. They go out of tune a lot as you break them in.

The lead guitar was probably aiming for some sort of cool distortion sound but things went horribly wrong. @ 2:12 he is like WTF is wrong with this shit? @ 2:53 you see him going town to fix his guitar pedal and he starts sounding normal again.

Glad to have good evidence of how bad that guy fucks up their performances haha, I went to one of their shows alone recently and none of my friends believed me when I was trying to describe how bad he was. Honestly do not understand how the rest of those members don’t hear it.
They heard it and they probably saw the reactions here. That's why they brought in another, more capable guitarist and turned the volume of the first one way down. They've been doing this for four years now. They don't get rid of him because he's Sophie's boyfriend.

I find it interesting that everyone's beating up on the lead guitarist while neglecting to mention that singer was out of tune on the 2nd song. As for the lead guy, he's not nearly bad enough to justify the overwhelming level of criticism in these comments -- if you don't believe me, just go into any Guitar Center. I'm thinking everyone's just jumping on the bandwagon being influenced more by other comments. What made him sound the worst was his tone -- it sounds thin and shrill; too many highs maybe. The tone on the singer's guitar was WAAAY better.
Nah, he butchered every single song. Go to 05:51 and then TRY to make the argument that he didn't deserve the criticism. As for the singer's 2nd song, It sounds pretty close to the studio release version so I have no clue what you're on about.

@@coollayo Yeah, I meant the guitar, lol. Sorry, it didn't even occur to me to clarify at the time I typed that, but yeah. She went to tune up just before the song (different tuning, I believe), but didn't get it on the mark (you can hear it especially with the chords played at 4:37-4:38).
I listened again to 5:10, and I didn't see what you're talking about. What did he do that was bad or wrong there from a musical perspective or as a player (I'm sure he would like to know as well)?

I'm no guitar expert, but that guy sucks. It sounds like he's playing random notes as he goes along. He's so out of sync with the rest of the band and drags the whole performance down.

I feel bad agreeing with everyone here; about 30 seconds in, I scrolled to the comments to see if anyone found the guitar work meek. A terrible thing to do, but sadly the quality of these songs far supersedes the musicianship. Rhythm section is great! Pleasantly surprised to really dig the vocals! As a guitar player, I use a LOT of effects... but I use them sparingly and when they sonically compliment the song. I'd recommend that the guitarist sell off those effects, use the cash to get Sophie a tuner, and learn how to phrase properly with confidence. Then, and only then, get a reverb pedal. I know I said I use a lot of effects, but honestly lush reverb and some considered counterpoint would do these songs some better justice. Sorry, I'm saying nothing new here and not trying to be mean, but I couldn't make it to the 7 minute mark. Please upgrade. Would love to here these songs bolstered with the musicianship they deserve.
