    So a Human, an Elf, a Kalashtar, a Warforged, an Autognome, and a Thri-Kreen walk into a tavern. The human says to the others "Do any of you have any dreams?", and the others simultaneously reply "No...".

    I'm so glad that they are being officially added to 5e, I have an insectile race in my D&D settings that is like an amalgate of various insectile humanoids, for now I'm just calling them the Kreen, with the subraces being based on the various types of insect, one of which will be the sort of ant/mantis-like Thri-Kreen. And for my first full campaign one of my players wants to in fact be a Thri-Kreen, so having the official stats to work from will help immensely with furthering the design of the base and the subrace.

    I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the excellent Thri Kreen NPC and the pair of adventures involving them in 2e Spelljammer in the Skulls and Crossbows book! It cemented my love of the Thri Kreen and was one of the most successful official Spelljammer adventures I ran back in the day. I’m so glad they are once more a playable people in the new edition!
    I hope that if the new Spelljammer set doesn’t have the Thri Kreen Leaf Ships and Thorn Ships and info on the past fallen Thri Kreen Empire that they may get covered in an expansion. Particularly as I want miniatures of them in the new Ship Scale Line.
    Because there’s so much cool stuff for Spelljammer I’m sure you can do a follow up set. People will want rules for playing Dohwar too, there’s so many many iconic ships I’m sure some classics didn’t make the cut for this set.
    I’m hyped for my preorder to come in, and already getting players hyped up too, desperately waiting for the miniature releases to come and I’m already wanting more 😁

    I’d love to play a Thri-Kreen Earth Genasi. Just an idea, but it would be really sweet if D&D released a small guide on unique Genasi hybrids, like some ways in which a Genasi could be born from different races and alter their stats/abilities to some small degree. Like maybe an Earth Genasi Thri-Kreen would have a less developed less functional second set of arms and lose or weaken its telepathy, but gain proficiency in camouflage and a small bonus in the defensive ability of its carapace.
    Also, I hope this means the Sahuagin are incoming. The locathah are adorable but I would love to see more monstrous beast races from the sea.

    An asspect that you can add to this is that the Thri language must be pretty complicated. Theres telepathy, which would make things smoother, but the non-verbal (non-telepathic) communication eould be very rich. They can still speak, make even more gestures, and change color. Its neat to think about how you could run with that into a sort of pseudo-hivemind.

    Thri-Kreen should have a few sub-races such as Soldier, Worker, Scout, and Noble just like how all ants in a colony are of that colony there are different types of ants for different purposes. While all Thri-Kreen can be what ever class they want, like any race, these sub-races are just to be specialists within their colony.
    Soldiers are Orc or Goliath sized getting a bonus to strength, within a colony they do tend to be guards and use primarily melee weapons.
    Workers are Human sized getting a bonus to intelligence, these make up the majority of a Thri-Kreen colony and do the majority of the work within the colony.
    Scouts are Halfling sized and get a bonus to their Wisdom, they have bigger eyes than others of their kind which can give them a cuter appearance but it's mainly so they can see better. They tend to be shy and skittish not wanting to get into troubleif they can help it.
    Noble are Elf sized and get a bonus to Charisma, they are the rarest type of Thri-Kreen with colonies tending to have at least one working as the leader of their colony while other's are in charge of organizing smaller groups of Thri-Kreen within the colony, Noble Thri-Kreen have a 1 in 1,000 chance of being born if conditions are right and at least one of their parents is a Noble as well. Only reason you'd see a Noble outside a colony is that they are looking to establish a new colony or are on a diplomatic mission for their colony and they are normally joined by a number of other Thri-Kreen from their mother colony. I'd also give them an upgrade to their Telepathic ability so they can speak to a wide area around them.

      Yes, because they are not the humanoid creature type. Centaurs, Satyrs, Fairies, and Changeling are Fey creature type so having a PC immune to spells that target humanoids isn't new or game breaking

    • @nekoali2
      @nekoali2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are already a number of races in the game that aren't of the Humanoid type and therefore immune to things that only affect Humanoids like Charm/Hold Person. Changelings and Hexbloods are Fey for instance. Warforged probably should be Constructs but they were introduces in books before they started labelling each race with their creature type. And probably would be far more harmful than good since then they couldn't be healed by healing magics.

    • @alexloch77

    Not a huge fan of the "all insectoid people are basically thri-kreen" logic on display here. Rastipedes and Xixchil are not basically thri-kreen, they are their own cool things, and you can't just stick a thri-kreen in their place.

    • @greyborn2213
      @greyborn2213 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      100%. Xixchil are probably my favourite of the Spelljammer races and they've basically been knocked outta existence in place of Thri-kreen. Hey, if we can have three bird races, two cat races and who even knows how many 'its a human but with x feature different' races then there's no reason not to have a handful of insectoids too!

  • @bskec2177
    @bskec2177 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So almost all pictures of Thri-kreen show them with a pole-arm in their main arms, and a smaller weapon in their smaller arms. Now I get to explain to my players RAW this is impossible, and they can never do this.
    If you want to dual wield, both weapons have to be light.
    If you take the Dual Wielder feat to use non-light weapons, they still have to be one-handed.
    Best I can offer is to wield a spear two-handed, and a short sword, but they still need the feat for that, so they would be better off with a war-hammer and short sword, but a non-Thri-Kreen could one-hand two warhammers and have the same damage profile. The dual wielder feat does for a Thri-Kreen what the gunner feat does for a Giff. Almost nothing.

    It's about time! I came up with the concept of a Thri-Kreen bard, and was wondering, since they can't speak, therefore they can't sing, could my bard play a lute or lyre with one set of arms, and drum/tambourine with the second set?

    • @nekoali2
      @nekoali2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not that Thri-kreen cant' speak, it's that their mouth structure doesn't work for speaking languages of flesh-mouths. They don't have the tongue and lips structure that most humanoids have, so they can't really speak their language the way those races can't speak the Thri-Kreen language. So they could sing in their own language, and possibly back that up with their telepathy so other races could understand it.
      I haven't seen the rules for them yet in 5e, but given that they can use both pairs of arms to wield weapons, I image they could train to play two different instruments at the same time as well.

    Ah yes, the Thri-Kreen. The fierce dessert dwelling mantis warriors of Aber-Toril and Athas... "They don't speak the way other folk do..." You mean the insectile pops, clicks, grinds and hums as well as the inability to make p, b, f, v, and m sounds... "... but that's okay because they have telepathy..." Um, okay... that's new... "...often serving as amazing diplomats, you know, peace-makers..." When they aren't trying to eat you, I guess, and certainly not when elves are involved... "... their carapace... can also change colour so they can blend in with their environment..." As long as that environment is sandy yellow...
    Long story short, you made up a whole new race and just called them and made them look somewhat like Thri-Kreen. Gotcha.

    • @videogollumer
      @videogollumer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The diplomat thing aside, did you not READ the Thri-kreen entry in the Monster Manual?! Also, people of the same race from different worlds can be vastly different. This has been apparent AT LEAST as far back as the debut of Eberron.

    • @Frankenstein077
      @Frankenstein077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@videogollumer No, I did not read the entry for Thri-kreen in the Monster Manual as there _isn't_ one. Everything I pointed out is from material that _predates_ Eberron, mostly from Forgotten Realms (Aber-Toril) and Dark Sun (Athas) sources. Yes, the races of different worlds can and do differ, this goes back to _long_ before Eberron was ever published. The elves, dwarves, and halflings of Grayhawk (Oerth), Forgotten Realms (Aber-Toril), and Mystara (aka The Known World) are all slightly different.
      The point, since it flew right over your head, obviously, is that, despite them even pointing out how the Thri-Kreen go "way back" in D&D lore, these new Thri-kreen are _almost nothing like_ what some of us _older_ players who actually _remember_ the older game and appreciate its history know as Thri-kreen.
