This Stunning Small Strawbale Home Looks Like It Was Carved From Stone

  • This incredible small home, located in a mountain ski town in New Zealand is like nothing we have ever seen before! Constructed out of structural straw and rendered in lime, this home looks as though it has been carved out of stone.
Using straw to construct the home gave builder Evan the ability to create something incredibly special, with beautiful rounded shapes throughout. The end result looks like a home that was more sculpted than built.
This is definitely a tour you won't want to miss! Enjoy viewing this spectacular home.

Rasa and I had a fantastic time filming this episode as we were lucky enough to get to stay in this amazing home for a few days and really enjoy the space. Here in England we have lots of beautiful thatched cottages and some walls (made of straw) and they have lasted hundreds of years, but I've never seen a modern one, what a cool build!

Def a cool build! How do the thatched roofs in England prevent mold in humidity and rain?

    • @cleonawallace376
      @cleonawallace376 ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@daranadine7711 The buildings are typically made of cob, which is mainly clay, with straw and sand, hair etc. mixed in. With good foundations and overhand roof they last for hundreds of years. Thatch is also really water resistant... reeds grow in water, so they are pretty waterproof, and when you have massive bunches of them, the rain just slides off. The only real problem with cob is when people in the 1960s and 70s painted them with modern, non breathable paints, so once any moisture does get in, it can't get out.

Extending the envelope using the Corolite canopy as a "weather shield" is a great way of keeping those outside spaces usable in as many weather conditions as possible. It's a neat trick to make the living area so much bigger than the hollowed-out giant pebble! The boundary materials, using the patina on steel, ties the building further into its location. Well done! 👍

I checked: possums are a big problem and culling them is necessary. A small, yet cozy home." Once you go inside, however, it doesn't look like it should. It's spacious, non constricting, and beyond cozy. I know that the dollar is more in New Zealand, but still. The figures he provided were 5000 hours of work, ~90k for the site and site prep and 120k for materials, but he didn't address the cost of labor. That's usually very broadly the same as materials as I understand it so figure another 120k for 330k total. Or figure 30/hr (using Scott Brown carpentry's labor cost estimates from one of his episodes) and you've got 150k for labor and you have 360k total. But if you're a craftsperson who can weld and plaster this might be more affordable.

We do have some companies that are building for our weather conditions, but nothing I have seen that combines art and function so beautifully. Great video. I prefer when one of you is visible and asking the questions 😉.
This is the most creative and beautiful small house that I’ve ever seen. The only thing that I didn’t understand is why this house is build on a trailer 🤷‍♀️.
But it is such a natural, round, organic environment full of super design ideas.
    Wonderful. Chapeau !!!

In the Netherlands is very little change on a tiny house sadly..
On a farmersland is now very difficult.
    No farmers no food.
    No hiring form.
Thank you very much for this beautiful tiny house

What an eloquent and creative builder. Great juxtaposition of pumice being abrasive but the home feeling so warm and cosy.

Odd that it looks so natural but possums used for upholstery. They are smart, harmless, and very like house pets such as catscand dogs

The exterior reminds me of an oyster shell..and then there's the pearl inside. Beautiful interior with gorgeous natural finishes..the water reflections, the stunning use of driftwood. Personally loved the "possum" couch..so luxurious and the richness of the colour..(no different to leather imo). This home is like being wrapped in a warm hug. Simply amazing.

Most unusual indeed. 🙂 A very artistic space, would absolutely love to stay here but I’d find it difficult as a full time home. I Adored the outside the most.

Bryce and Rasa, This is a beautiful work and very inspiring. Have been watching your wrk for several years and you are always inspiring. I am pretty surprised you didn't discuss the roof over the whole project as I was very keen to hear about it as I plan my own home here in the SW US. would you know of where I can further research that? Cheers and thank you for all that hard work!

Stunning. I have always wanted to do a straw build on a trailer, its so exciting to know its possible!! I'm curious, did they say why they chose to build on a trailer? The build seems so site specific so I was wondering if they wanted the flexibility to move it or if it was for permitting reason or something?

I'm guessing it can't be moved. It's 18 feet wide, plus the plaster would likely crack. If forced to move during the rainy season, water entering the straw would lead to mold and thereby health issues.

What is the shade (roof) over the house and patio built of? How is it made secure so that winds don’t make it airborne?
Love the koi pond and steppingstones into the home!
The living room is large, but cozy.
Interesting that he disguised the tv as a headboard.
    What a view!
Thanks for taking us on this tour.

    Really amazing. Well done!
A TH-cam cycling couple Syd and Macky have some videos about the timber frame and straw-built house his siblings built on their parents' property in New Mexico, USA. It's a little larger than a true tiny house, but it's still pretty small.
