Came here as soon as I read the news. This mv was one of the reason I started to stan him as an actor 12 years ago and will always be one of my fav Nell song. Hearing this song after today will definitely feel different. Rest easy Jaerim 🤍
I left a comment 6 years back in Korean but I want to leave another one today in 2023. This MV, this cinematography, this acting, this flow, this song, this melody, this lyrics - everything is just so perfect, such a masterpiece in Korean music world. I can’t understand why people not knowing this but I’m glad that I’m listening to this now…
I saw a post about this MV so I wanted to share what's the author's analysis "Firstly I quote a TH-cam comment about the music video plot (because I know a lot of people, including myself, were quite confused by the story line of the video when it first came out): Minki committed suicide and left a video as a suicide note. His friend gets the video and decides to reenact the death by setting up the camera as Minki did. He places himself in that scene by sitting across from him. He's listening to the video and is either imagining the possible conversation he would have had with Minki, or replying to what Minki's saying. He's trying to come to terms with Minki's death and wishes he could've done more. His face when Minki drinks the poison is heartbreaking. - CommanderHerder note: this is what one person sees as the plot; you may wish to see it any other way but for my analysis I will go with this plot because it was along the lines of what I thought as well. Also, my analysis is just what I thought of the video and you may feel free to disagree (: My approach to this analysis will be divided into the different aspects which I enjoyed or found particularly lovely about this video: Cinematography and symbolism. Cinematography I don't know if anyone else noticed this but I love how the filming of the video is done. Notice that there are no full body shots, apart from the part at about 2:47 where Minki pours the poison into the coffee cup? I think this was done to show that Minki and Jaerim are not having a real conversation. As the comment I quoted earlier mentioned, Jaerim is listening to/watching the video and is placing himself in the situation. By avoiding filming full body shots up to the point where Minki poisons his coffee, it suggests that the two characters are not really having the conversation at all. By filming a full-body shot at the point where the poison is added, it shows that Minki's suicide is a reality, changing the possible initial thoughts that the whole conversation never happened. The angle at which certain parts were filmed also plays an important part in showing that Minki and Jaerim are not together in the same room throughout the video. At about 1:39, the video is filmed at a lower angle, showing two pairs of feet: Minki's, and Jaerim's, whose feet are slightly tapping to an invisible beat. This could imply that Jaerim, who is just beginning to watch the video, probably has no clue that Minki had committed suicide at that point in time because the tapping of feet suggests a light-hearted mood. At around 4:48 however (after Minki has died), the video is shot from the same angle, but only one pair of feet is shown: Jaerim's. This reveals the truth: that Jaerim is actually alone in the room, and his conversation with Minki was merely his imagination. Another thing that really played with my emotions was the lighting. In the earlier parts of the video, both Minki's and Jaerim's faces are lit by the light from the adjacent window. However, after Minki had consumed the poisoned drink, there seemed to be little or no light shining on his face (from about 3:21 onwards.) Jaerim's face on the other hand, seems to be more illuminated by the light, which also highlighted the tears forming in his eyes (around 4:00 and 4:21). I don't know why but it just made me feel that the lighting was done in such a way to show that Minki is gone, while Jaerim has to face the reality of that. Also at about 4:32, when Minki falls back against his chair, the backlighting that silhouettes him gives a sort of spiritual, heaven-like feeling, showing that that was the end (of him.) Symbolism Before I understood the plot of the video, I had this thought that the two characters (portrayed by Lee Minki and Song Jaerim) had an inanimate object that symbolized them throughout the whole video: namely the coffee cup for Minki, and the camera for Jaerim. The coffee cup: the suicide video begins with a shot of the cup of coffee being filled. This symbolizes the start of the suicide note. At about 3:11, after Minki has consumed the poisoned coffee, the cup is placed back on the table: with the remaining coffee swirling around at the bottom of the cup. This seems to symbolize Minki's "end", as shown by the empty cup. Otherwise, the empty cup could also show the emptiness Jaerim feels after Minki's death. The camera: the camera is what narrates Minki's story; it is what he left behind for Jaerim to see. It is an inanimate object, therefore it did not, or rather could not, do anything to stop Minki from poisoning himself while the video was recorded. This reflects Jaerim's character, who, as someone who is merely watching the suicide note/video, is unable to do anything to prevent it (as it had already happened.) In this case, Jaerim is almost made to be inanimate in a way that he was unable to stop Minki from poisoning himself. Timing and Lyrics I love how the different shots of the coffee cup were taken. At the beginning of Minki's story, it opens with him pouring coffee into the cup (at around 0:35.) The aerial shot of the full cup signifies the beginning. Later on at about 1:41, he places the cup back after drinking some of it, and it is another aerial shot of the cup. This time the cup is shown to be half-filled. This ties in with the timing and flow of the video, which is now in the middle stage. And after all the poisoned coffee has been consumed, the cup is replaced on the table, with the remaining coffee swirling around at the bottom. This ties in with the fact that Minki's story is about to end. Now that I've read the lyrics, I have a little bit more to say oh no. Right after Minki drinks the poisoned coffee, Jongwan sings the line "너의 시간 역시 때론 멈춰버리는지", which translates to "I wonder if sometimes, time has stopped for you too". I think this ties is wonderfully with that particular part. At that part, time for Minki has indeed stopped. At the same time, it's as if he is asking Jaerim: does his departure cause time to stop for him? The fact that this part is followed by Jaerim's hand holding the glass, trembling, shows Jaerim's raw emotion of hurt seeing time coming to a stop for his friend. This could also be an indication of Jaerim's time slowly coming to a stop for him as well, as he struggles to come to terms with Minki's suicide. After Minki replaces the now-empty cup, Jongwan sings the lines "이별은 어때? 어떤 아픔도 덜해?", which translate to "How is the separation? Was it just enough for you to endure, since you were prepared for it? Was it less painful?" After this line, Jongwan sings "사랑은 어떤? 사실 난 그래 그저 두렵기만 해" which translates to "What about love? Is it worth doing again? Honestly, this is my truth. I'm just afraid." after which Jaerim is shown with his eyes beginning to brim with tears, showing that he is unable to come to terms with what has happened. He wasn't "prepared" for it, contrary to the line that says "...you were prepared for it". As for Minki, he was probably questioning love; maybe his suicide was because of it. Possibly, he thought that it was not "worth doing again", hence the suicide. The "truth" was that he was "just afraid". He could have been afraid of facing love again and going through the same thing, which could have been a reason why he did that. You can never really tell why he commits suicide based on the video alone, which is why I thought referring to the lyrics could help a little. The part I liked most (regarding the timing and lyrics) was when the line "This is all that I can say" is sung right before Minki falls back in his chair. This can be taken literally, in a way that it actually is all that he can say (because he dies afterwards) ;_____; Miscellaneous I find it ironic how drinking coffee is supposed to keep you awake, but for Minki, drinking coffee put him to sleep. Forever. And now I am done with my analysis. All the feels have been expressed ᅲᅲ"
Enora L. i have watched this video more than once and i just had time to read your analysis and i didnt regret it. great analysis !! ur analysis puts more meaning into the video
Enora L. sorry but I think that the lyrics is actually Jaerim's words, so the "This is all that I can say" part and the ending "Thinking about the words that let you go" and "The words that will never reach you" are the parts about his regret. In the beginning too, he said "At first it was really hard...", he was saying that at first he couldn't accept the fact that Minki was gone, but then he kinda found a way to accept it and now it was just plain sadt after I accepted it Now it’s just so sad
Wow i used to listen to this song a lot when I was deep into my depression. Almost 6 years later im so much better. I love living now, i promise it will get better
Hope your soul is resting now Sung Jae-rim. You brought so much comfort to people through your art and performances. As if this song by NELL wasn't heartbreaking enough. Whenever I hear it again, I'll remember you. You'll be missed.
This song has always been my favorite the lyrics, the melody, and the entire music video. I first discovered it in 2013, and ever since, I dreamed of having my own ending like the one in that story. I’ve watched it over 500 times and listened to the song every day, remembering every detail. Now, in that story, Jae Rim has taken Lee Min Ki’s place. Jae Rin… You’ll stay in my heart forever, and saying goodbye truly breaks it. Thank you for all the moments and memories you’ve given us.
I'm all grown up now but it's really weird how my life circled back. I'm watching this video after all these years feeling exactly the same pain I felt back then. It's so dumb how my life is still so messed up and nothing has changed. The video is just perfect I can't stop crying now haha
The book Minki's reading is a Korean translation of "And our faces, my heart, brief as photos", a novel by John Berger. In it, he talks about the idea of living on after death through photos and films, if I'm not wrong. My take on this is that Minki's friend there envisions talking to a still alive Minki as he rolls the tape Minki filmed before he committed suicide. He pictures Minki as alive while watching the tape, thus the portrayal of him conversing with Minki (though he's passed on).
*01/08/17 UPDATE:* 04:15 -Live your life and do what you desire for. And i found out that what he was writing at 0:24 is the beginning of the lyrics of the song and it ends with "But as I continue living like this, I wonder what the point of living is". --------------- 02:54 -Tell me if you want to return time. -Not really. 03:17 -Im fine, because it doesn't hurt anymore. -"smiles"
The video is about Minki, who committed suicide and left a video as a suicide note. His friend gets the video and decides to reenact the death by setting up the camera like he did. He places himself in that scene by sitting across from him. He's listening to the video and is either imagining the possible conversation he would have had with Minki, or replying to what Minki's saying. I guess he's trying to come to terms with Minki's death and wishes he could've done more :(
You don't have idea how many historys make about this video. All talking about falling in love and dead withou that. And, i just... because i coming here to lisening againg. And see you coment and i understand everything. I''m not a crying person, but this touch me really deep. So thanku and sorry my english i still learning.
The reason why he suicided is because he was a musician but started to lose his hearing(Hint: a piano scene(00:12) and the phrase in the book(01:48); "If you were deaf in one ear") And some of their mouth movements could be translated as "what's the matter with you?" or "what makes you so distressed?"(02:14) // "Well...(?)" // "To that extents," // "You're always in that way." ...... "If you want to make return..." (02:54)//"Not much. Hey, smile. I'm pleased to be not painful anymore."
I think the MV shows how a gay couple is not accepted in Korea. They also refer to a break up in the song. He is committing suicide because he is not accepted in the Korean community

I saw a post about this MV so I wanted to share what's the author's analysis
"Firstly I quote a TH-cam comment about the music video plot (because I know a lot of people, including myself, were quite confused by the story line of the video when it first came out):
Minki committed suicide and left a video as a suicide note. His friend gets the video and decides to reenact the death by setting up the camera as Minki did. He's listening to the video and is either imagining the possible conversation he would have had with Minki, or replying to what Minki's saying. He's trying to come to terms with Minki's death and wishes he could've done more. His face when Minki drinks the poison is heartbreaking. - CommanderHerder
note: this is what one person sees as the plot; you may wish to see it any other way but for my analysis I will go with this plot because it was along the lines of what I thought as well. Also, my analysis is just what I thought of the video and you may feel free to disagree (:
My approach to this analysis will be divided into the different aspects which I enjoyed or found particularly lovely about this video: Cinematography and symbolism.
Cinematography
I don't know if anyone else noticed this but I love how the filming of the video is done.
Also at about 4:32, when Minki falls back against his chair, the backlighting that silhouettes him gives a sort of spiritual, heaven-like feeling, showing that that was the end (of him.)
Symbolism
Before I understood the plot of the video, I had this thought that the two characters (portrayed by Lee Minki and Song Jaerim) had an inanimate object that symbolized them throughout the whole video: namely the coffee cup for Minki, and the camera for Jaerim.
Timing and Lyrics
I love how the different shots of the coffee cup were taken.
견뎌질만해 준비한 만큼? 어떤 아픔도 덜해?", which translate to "How is the separation? Was it just enough for you to endure, since you were prepared for it? Was it less painful?" After this line, Jongwan sings "사랑은 어떤? 다시 할 만해?
The part I liked most (regarding the timing and lyrics) was when the line "This is all that I can say" is sung right before Minki falls back in his chair. This can be taken literally, in a way that it actually is all that he can say (because he dies afterwards) ;_____;
Miscellaneous
I find it ironic how drinking coffee is supposed to keep you awake, but for Minki, drinking coffee put him to sleep. Forever.
And now I am done with my analysis. All the feels have been expressed
Enora L. great analysis
Enora L. i have watched this video more than once and i just had time to read your analysis and i didnt regret it. great analysis !! ur analysis puts more meaning into the video
Iin Risam
It's not my analysis but yeah I think this it's accurate!
Enora L. sorry but I think that the lyrics is actually Jaerim's words, so the "This is all that I can say" part and the ending "Thinking about the words that let you go" and "The words that will never reach you" are the parts about his regret. In the beginning too, he said "At first it was really hard...", he was saying that at first he couldn't accept the fact that Minki was gone, but then he kinda found a way to accept it and now it was just plain sadt after I accepted it
Now it’s just so sad
+Enora L. The characters on the MV are Nell band members or not? Sory but I didn't knew Nell till now. PS I must to say Nell is absolutelly amazing.
I can't stop thinking about it.🥲

Do you know the name of the book?
a longstanding mystery solved.

-Live your life and do what you desire for.

same. i don't even understand korean
And the most beautiful
The video is about Minki, who committed suicide and left a video as a suicide note. His friend gets the video and decides to reenact the death by setting up the camera like he did. He places himself in that scene by sitting across from him. He's listening to the video and is either imagining the possible conversation he would have had with Minki, or replying to what Minki's saying. I guess he's trying to come to terms with Minki's death and wishes he could've done more :(

The reason why he suicided is because he was a musician but started to lose his hearing(Hint: a piano scene(00:12) and the phrase in the book(01:48); "If you were deaf in one ear")
And some of their mouth movements could be translated as "what's the matter with you?" or "what makes you so distressed?"(02:14) // "Well...(?)" // "To that extents," // "You're always in that way."
......
"If you want to make return..." (02:54)//"Not much. Hey, smile. I'm pleased to be not painful anymore."
oh thanks for explaining! still, is suicide all that is left to do with that news? such a waste of a good life.
I think the MV shows how a gay couple is not accepted in Korea. They also refer to a break up in the song.
He is committing suicide because he is not accepted in the Korean community
Haru Tour no...it's not about gay story. This is about friends and people who are left
Haru Tour Its no way about that .. this is so basic .. the MV got a deeper meaning
