    I have a tendency to imitate the singers of the songs I listen to, and this was so much fun because it reminded me that when I sang when I was younger I used to freestyle a lot like this! This was so much fun!! Thank you for this excellent video!

      You absolutely want to tap into that child-like free spirit when you sing!

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think everyone sort of imitates the people they listen to, I do it too and took me a bit to use my natural resonant register because I was trying to use someone else's. What clicked with me and sort of forced me to stop imitating was Matt Bellamy from MUSE. That man can teach a person a ton of techniques and he is a great singer that has perfect pitch but is highly underrated.
      With him I ended up learning how to use the nuances to my own voice to color the tone and make my own sound, you can hear me cover "Something Human" on my channel, it was the first time I ever used my own voice and just used the style of the singer and not the tone. He sang it much differently than I did but it came out pretty decent, that was quite a bit ago and now my recordings are coming out way better.
      All I have learned was from various vocal coaches, both male and female and good at what they do. Mark here is another one I listen to very closely to because of the wealth of knowledge he has. Imitation is to be expected and is how we all start, its what motivates us to sing. The easiest change to make to a song is changing the register it is sang originally in to either lower or higher, this is a dramatic change from the original and will make you want to throw in different styling's to further make it original to you. A good example for me was bringing the hiccups that Buddy Holley and Dwight Yoakam puts into songs and then putting them in another song that never had them.
      I like to tell others what works for me because you can never know if what you say will resonate with another person so I offer my perspective, in the hopes it might help someone. Plus others will correct me if I give bad advice and I can learn from them that way. So I really hope it helps.

    Brilliant, I am sure that you are well aware that this will cause emotional overload for many of us. Dry the tears, recompose and continue. Thank you very much Mark . I am in my 60s and find your presentations perfect for me.

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes - it does the same for me. I am also in my 60's and I continue to be amazed how singing "about nothing" triggers so much emotion. Thank goodness we have singing as our safe space.

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dude I am 41 and there are songs I cannot cover due to how emotional they make me, I have also came across songs I have played or made up on guitar and the beauty alone of how it sounds can sometimes cause me to tear up. Music is the only freedom we will all ever have in life, it is the only element that isn't controlled by anyone else other than you.
      Everything else we do has some sort of regulatory rule attached to it. There are no real rules to singing or playing music, people only tell you how they do it and what works for them and info that tries to get you to "good" as quickly as possible. But ultimately there are no rules. Even going to get groceries you follow several societal rules. I think this is why music feels so freeing because it truly is the only free activity you don't get a license to do.
      I find that very bothersome due to the fact that some rules are literally there for no good reason, a good example is fishing, which is basic survival and they tell us we need a license from them before we can eat fish. As far as I can tell, God made the fish, they were never humans responsibility to regulate something they didn't create directly. Its all just a false sense of who has authority over literally people. We are all slaves to our governmental masters who tell us we need to consult with them before we can even act, needing permission for a natural right of survival = slavery, always has and always will.
      Sorry for the rant I get to talking sometimes lol.

    I have commented about this lesson before, and each time I do it I love it more than the last. Your encouragement is amazing and I class myself as a higher end of Mezzo Soprano now. The vocalising in this lesson together with the melodies, really takes my voice up to a great high note. So once again, my most grateful thanks.

    Thanks for bringing to clarity the need for toning. I'm a vocalist and I've been believing that if I sing "with" widely diverse artist through the day as I work ( I work at home making jewelry) that's the best I can do for my singing. And yes, moving from Ella Fitzgerald to Howling Wolf has helped me develope great range. But all of the vocal warmups and exercises are clearly superior. And, with you, almost as much fun!! I've been trapped in the land of your vocal instructions for hours so far today! Just moved to NC and it's taken awhile to find a new band but now I have a couple great players to work with so I'm so excited to have your videos! Thanks! For me singing, as with everything, is about fun!!!

    Fantastic! I think that I've found what I've been looking for in a vocal coach! I've tried/viewed many Vocal Exercises/Warm-Ups, and found yours to be the most comprehensive, simplest (or complicated with excellent explanations) and COMPLETE! I can do these exercises before recording and rehearsals and be good to go (all the while improving my voice daily).
    I've reached 51 years old (52 next month) without a coach (since high school) and now I've been asked to do some recording (volunteer), so I really want to give my best and improve my voice. Over the years, with no guidance or goal, I've allowed some very bad habits and vocal/singing laziness to occur, so I'm trying to fix that NOW! Mark, Thanks for making these available!

    You say ask "Why?"" if I get louder as we go higher and suggest we are avoiding something (that register). The way I would put it is I'm avoiding sounding awful, which happens as I go higher without sufficient volume. It's hard for me to sing high and lightly without sounding weak and generally unpleasant. I think I just don't have a sufficiently conditioned instrument yet, as I'm relatively new to singing still. Just wanted to share what answer pops in my head when I ask myself "Why?". Just discovered your channel and it's great. I look forward to more videos and working hard. Cheers

    You are fast becoming my favourite on these tutoring sites. Gosh Mark, did I have fun here. I "went along with you" until the last bit where you say vary the melody, so the fun came in the last 2 or 3 minutes, you varying the melody, and me singing a different melody. My husband gave me a really strange look - but we did sound like a couple of cats at this stage, vying for top spot!

    This is a great lesson. I started making variations right away and had great fun with it. I would love to be able to play in a jazz band and improvise. HOWEVER: I found it is also dangerous. Eventually I started putting words to my notes and started singing a love song to my husband who died 9 years ago. And then I started crying--and as I've learned before--you can't cry and sing at the same time. At least I can't. So I guess it's time for some lunch.
