SEPTA obviously has a short memory and hasn't learned much with the colossal fiasco and failure of the battery electric buses placed on two short routes in South Philadelphia. The entire fleet of those 25 buses were withdrawn from service and have been hidden away out of sight and hopefully out of mind in a bus garage for over three years. Nobody in SEPTA management has ever been held accountable for this costly mistake. So here we go again !! Your tax dollars at work.
The entire fleet of Proterra battery buses was removed from the roads by SEPTA,, in February 2020, due to among other things, structural and logistical problems-the weight of the powerful battery was cracking the vehicles' chassis, and the battery life was insufficient for the bus routes. SEPTA raised the issues with Proterra, which failed to adequately address their concerns.
SEPTA paid $24 million for the 25 new Proterra buses, subsidized in part by a $2.6 million Federal grant. SEPTA in Philadelphia placed the Proterra buses in areas where it 'thought' they could succeed but quickly learned it was mistaken, even though they were advised against it. Two pilot routes selected in South Philadelphia that were relatively short and flat compared with others in the city were too much for the electric buses. Those two routes were dormant electric trackless trolley routes that SEPTA couldn't wait to get rid of. Even Proterra advised SEPTA not to scrap the existing trackless trolley overhead wire infrastructure. They suggested that SEPTA convert two diesel bus lines instead. But SEPTA couldn't wait to get the wire cutters out.

I grew up in South Philly. Why did they discontinue routes 29 and 79 in the first place?

I’m thinking the same why not use the Septa new flyer E40LFR’s for route 29 and 79 instead of diesel, diesel hybrid and battery 🔋 electric
