      I've been playing this so long I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly on the seas. The worst players on the seas seem to think that this game is only about pvp and attack everyone on sight just for the fight. I'd like to remind everyone that it's the interactions that make the game, not pvp. Pvp can be fun but pvp only is boring. Don't forget to look for and have friendly interactions, too. You never know what kind of goofball fun someone might be having. They might be trying to cover an island with stools, collecting kegs to blow up an island, collecting treasure to decorate an outpost, or looking for a shrubbery (plants). You miss the crazy antics people come up with if you choose to treat everyone as a threat or choose to always be a threat yourself.

    The number of times I"ve rage-quit over this mode after being matched with players way out of my league is astronomical. I've been in that dude's place more times than I can count and still can't seem to improve. Phuzzy's right, getting repeatedly spawn-killed on the way out of bounds is soul-sucking depressing when it's happening to you, even if it is a completely legitimate win strategy. Like other commenters have said, the biggest thing is to consider the other human you're interacting with. Outside of this little pirate game, they have lives, problems, successes, and worries and even a witty conversation mid-fight might be the difference between a player choosing to try again or hang up their pirate hat for good.

    • @centurionpetrus1784

    As a veteran that doesn't consider itself a pvp fundamentalist, one single thing that i dislike about the game's community is the incompetence of pvprs or "competitive players" to see how unsatisfying is the way on learning and how punishing it feels to lose many times, especially in the gamemode.
    I deeply understand rooks feeling underwhelmed and discouraged to pvp, because i see myself when i began playing arena, but that mode was really much arcade and felt fun, although there was some really good players back there, probably similar skill ceiling as today.

      One night, my girlfriend and I kept getting matched against these same two double gunning sweatlords on a DA sloop. The first time we fought, they sunk us in about a minute. By the sixth time, though, we had learned to survive about 5 minutes against them and were managing to repel about half of their boarding attempts. We never won, but we grew our skills a lot.
      That night, we learned that getting repeatedly sunk by a better crew can be demoralizing, but it's also an opportunity to learn.
      When it happens, try to keep your cool, learn their habits, and try something different each time you face them. If you're able, try to copy what they do. You'll learn a lot really fast.

    This brought tears to my eyes. I wish there were more people like you on the Sea of Thieves Phuzzy. You made that guy’s day better, his experience with the game better, and perhaps saved him from becoming another salty-turned-toxic pvp sweat lord. It’s the Sea of Thieves, not the Sea of Toxicity. Many of us use this game as an escape from the toxicity around us and when we then get bombarded by more of the same in game, it becomes disheartening. Sadly, it’s rare to come across decent players, even while PVPing. When you do, both sides get excited and usually end up chatting while trying to sink the other’s vessel as it’s such a treat after hours of cussing, s*** talking, and just overwhelming negativity. Here’s hoping that you and other positive streamers can inspire people to be better pirates on the Seas. I am glad that you have empathy for other players. We need more people like you.
    To be quite honest, the hourglass PvP is a bit repetitive and tiresome to me, I am not enjoying it for a few reasons, one of the is that I am in a middle ground where I am not completely incompetent and can give a good fight, but at the same time I can't secure a win. So it is just a long battle for me for the same tiny ammount of allegiance after a loss. Loss farmers are progressing faster than what I am doing and I wish the game recognized the efforts and performance the players are doing instead of just considering the result.

    • @Sound_Tech
      @Sound_Tech ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same. I'm either matched with noticeably incompetent players who I feel bad for beating, or I'm matched with a full skeleton crew of sweats who curb stomp me. Rarely is there any in-between.
      It's demoralizing knowing there are players out there good enough to reach a kill streak of 20 and it feels like it was only RNG that got me to a streak of 2.
      I'm trying to improve myself and all it's getting me is more time consuming loses.

    • @mingodingo
      @mingodingo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      >i wish the game recognized the efforts and performance instead of just considering the result
      The game typically doesn't do this in any way whatsoever. If you turn in a big haul in peace is worth exactly as much gold as if you had fought off 100 PVPers. Even people who love pvp would admit it's a waste of time when the only added benefit of the second scenario is the "fun memories".

  • @amethyst_dawn
    @amethyst_dawn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember one time I met a guy who just absolutely gave up halfway through the fight, and I didn't realize until I boarded him. I chatted a bit, heard the defeat in his voice and gave him the best pep talk I could. Next time we matched up he ended that battle by knocking me off my ship and peppering it so badly it sank before I could get back on. He earned that win and I was proud of him for it.
    I'm no therapist, and I definitely have my rage moments. But encouraging people to keep going when they hit rock bottom is always going to feel great.
    And your tip at the end is something I learned the hard way. You start winning more when you stop giving a crap.

    i'll admit i'm giving up on SoT because my faith in humanity was crushed on the double merchant xp day,
    i was solo slooping merchant and was "approached" by a reaper vessel who seemed friendly and we were talking about alliancing so they'd get rep and i'd help them in their hourglass battles,
    then they asked me to raise an hourglass so i raised the flame same as them, and they sunk me saying they wanted allegiance.
    2 hours of my work down the drain, no profit or xp, all they got was broken bottles and wet cloth and they didn't even get the allegiance they wanted because you don't get flame rep sinking other servants

    If you meet a new or bad player, don't say him "There are big discords, you safe find someone", instead add him as a friend and play with him until he can stand on his own feet or even longer. That way you can divide an self concentrated from a carying player.

    "That's a win" damn right. everyone should inspire their opponents. If I beat you, I want you to practice and come back and kick my ass. and if you lose, just do your best to be a good sport about it and don't get discouraged. I've been there. No one is born a winner, it takes a lot of losing.

  • @mr.joestar7500
    @mr.joestar7500 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One of the major factors of learning any new skill will always boil down to morale.
    It is true, the only way to get good at pvp is through practice and continuous hard work. But when you’re continuously getting stomped time and time again, leaving little to no room to even attempt to fight back, you can’t blame someone for quitting pvp or even the game as a whole.
    I’ve played this game since it’s launch on steam. The majority of this time was solo till I met my current crew. To this day I am still horrible at one on one pvp, and I haven’t played hourglass for quite some time nor have a desire to anymore.
    Back before hourglass. When the only two modes were arena and adventure, pvp looked a lot different. In adventure, the most common objective is to make money. So most natural pvp is highly defensive and mostly naval. Either trying to drive off an attacker or overwhelm a target, with boarding normally only being used as a final nail. The target trying to defend their loot and the attacker trying to steal it.
    But when you go into hourglass, the only objective is to kill the other crew. There is no defending loot or trying to steal. So the pvp encounters in hourglass are highly aggressive. With the most common, and most effective strat is to board and spawn trap, and either drive the other out, or bleed them out and prevent them from repairing.
    Back before pvp, with all the time I spent solo I became really good at naval. But naval doesn’t mean shit when the prevailing hg strat is to spawn trap you, you can’t use your naval skills if your stuck on the ferry.
    So the only way to become good at hg pvp was to partake in it, as adventure has a much different combat style, not as aggressive. So when someone like me attempts it, it quickly becomes a drain on your morale and time. Getting spawn trapped doesn’t allow for any practice at all because there’s barely a window to fight back unless you already know how to one on one. So properly practicing hg pvp quickly becomes it’s own monumental task. And one that I, in the end realized wasn’t something I would be capable of.

    Coming from someone who spends hours and hours watching tip vids and how to tutorials JUST on pvp, the most important thing (like phuzzy said) is to not take it too seriously. Losing over and over again is tough and makes the game not fun anymore.
    I remember attempting to grind and get a win streak and fought against what seemed like day 1 pirates or maybe they were just young kids. But it almost felt unfair getting that win and made me feel kinda sad. Everyone wants to do well and get the rewards but treating humans as if they're not just like you is a different level of apathy. Thanks for seeing passed the screen Phuzzy!

In the sea battles in open water im good but once we get close to going in an out of islands the loads lag me or if they make it on board its a lost fight for me. I get in the game with full expectations of not getting any loot. Its nice to know there are players out there like you Phuzzy an I hope to run into a few. First few days of PVP, I played from morning to midnight and had 42 total losses in a row.
    Now I got the ghost curse and halfway the skeleton. got 200+ sinks and even got a 5 row killstreak.
    I gave up after those 42 losses, took a nap, got a decent meal in my body and then started learning.
    and then came back after a good long hard talk with my friend.
    and only after taking some self-care did I start to learn and improve again.
    Don't forget to take breaks, hell if you REALLY want to improve you can watch some tutorials or pro-gameplay mid lunch.
    Or if you got time but got burned out on pvp, but still wanna grind for something? try the hunters call, get some of those pacifist friends, open a can of beer and hang out fishing, tell them of your crazy pvp adventures and maybe one of them will be inspired enough to join you, and if not. you can at least spend some quality break time together.

    I enjoy sea of thieves, I only downloaded it to play with my teenage son (who rarely plays now because of seemingly endless toxicity of the game at times) to counter this, myself and a buddy will leave incredible amounts of voyage supplies and crates on docks or buried nearby for other players to have and have (willingly) donated treasure on many occasions. We usually dont fire on other players unless they fire first or it is obvious that they wish to engage which puts us at an extreme disadvantage. But you are correct, it is only pixels on screen but there are actual people with actual feelings on the other side. I know the frustration of being camped and sunk with much treasure on board after hours of work to find it all. Just trying to make the Sea a bit friendlier. 😁

    What an awesome dude. I agree with one of the other comments, more people need to be like you. I get the need to win and have the curses, but sometimes PvP is just not worth the waste of time to gather resources just to sink 5 minutes later... I have genuinely avoided it due to how terrible I am, most of the time I run from other ships and will gladly scuttle/sail out into the red to avoid the conflict due to how salty the exchange of messages are... That and the constant disappointment... Anyways GG Phuzzy :)

    Reminds me back in the day when I helped admin/play a private Battlefield 4 multiplayer server. More than once I'd join the server and be against one of our members who I knew I could mop the floor with, even though I would consider myself at best slightly above average. I would delibrately miss shots and be exposed, but not in any patronizing or overly obvious way. It could easily be me just having a bad day at the game, but I was happy hearing the other player having so much fun as they weren't getting getting killed non stop.

    That was really nice of you Phuzzy. I tried the new PVP mode when the season dropped and bounced off hard. There's just something about it in terms of my own competitive spirit that can't handle matchmaker PVP. Like regular PVP fights are usually attacks of opportunity and either party has plenty of options to flee or wear down their adversary. Something about losing a 'cage' match against another ship just hits the wrong way with me. It's not as much about bad circumstances or luck, it feels more like they're better than you. Not to mention the point that it just brings out what I think is the worst of SoT PVP: spawn camping. I'd really like to see the developers make naval combat more feasible, and if it can do it without screwing up the boarding game for everyone else then even better.
    That being said, I think the game has needed something like this for a while and I'm glad it's here. From the little bit of regular adventure mode I've played it seems like the most hardcore sweats are pretty preoccupied. That makes the regular opportunistic PVP a lot more casual for average crews.
