I also like to think that, when he talks about "we're all living in a dream" he is talking about this illusion that nothing bad exists in the world, that everything is perfect for everybody, but that this is not the reality. And then, when he talks about "leave me to dream" and "And I'm short of the others' dreams of being golden and on top" he realizes that no one wants to live this way. People want to feel joyful, happy, and safe. Dan doesn’t want to be pessimistic, so he finds it easier to live in this idyllic dream.
There comes a time when we have to face problems head on, get out of our bubbles and see the problems in the world but people refuse to leave their comfort zone, music portrays our reality, it is impossible to change the world
I love how ID can give us a happy, blast and cheerful song, but they also have that music that is reflective, emotional, that speaks volumes about feelings, anxieties and expectations. Thats just one of the reasons why i love them! That song belongs to "Smoke+Mirrors" album, for me, is one of my favs along with "Night Visions"
For me I feel like the "I'm leaving" line was him refusing to see the world as it has been painted for him, adopting a more somber or pessimistic outlook, but still WANTING to dream whether in a sense of being hopeful or wanting to stay in denial.

Another somewhat esoteric level to the sentiment behind this song stems from the songwriter's cultural experience being raised and living in the same society/belief system I was also brought up in. It's one that's absolutely brimming with Extremely Nice Lovely, Upbeat, Positive, Glass-Half-Full kind of people with great attitudes. Unfortunately, sometimes, this super positive mindset also brings along a sense of communal subconscious perception bias that minimizes the experience of any negative or difficult events that happen to come into one's life. Which tends to foster the end result that some people, experiencing real pain, tragedy, and trauma in their lives are unable to find community members willing to sit down and look at the event or situation they're struggling with and validate the true difficulty and reality of the situation. Instead, they're surrounded by people wearing rose colored glasses permanently glued to their faces. These are the people who consistently but subconsciously gaslight to believe that it's NOT as serious, NOT as big of a deal, NOT as important, NOT as relevant, NOT as hurtful, NOT as invasive of a procedure, NOT as upsetting, NOT as tragic, NOT as all encompassing to one's life as sometimes actually happens in reality. So, he sees through this rose tinted belief system and realizes that things actually are a mess. He "wants to be left to dream" because he wishes he could just go back to that state of ignorant bliss. But, once he's come to know that they're "all living in a dream," he can't make himself unknow it.

Imagine dragons from the start until smoke + mirrors were pretty good. Maybe a little bit linear but still pretty good. They sold right tf out with Evolve and it was sad to see
I think it's possible to have a realistic understanding of life without being pessimistic or having to force yourself to feel optimistic. The real trick is not to let yourself become a cynic.
