My wife and I were invited to travel on this train because back in 1962 I took the initiative to do something about saving it and started up a fund to purchase it with. Initially I was hoping to save an. 'F' class locomotive, L52 which I could have purchased for £500, but when I came to hand over the cheque I was advised against buying it due to it having a cracked main frame, but was offered L44, an 'E' class loco in full working order for £450. The rest, as they say - is history. I have to admit that I became quite emotional when I saw how well it now looked, and sounded.Jim Stringer.
The clip of the old Metropolitan steam train passing through Barbican station on a cold, snowy winter's evening is just magic. Brilliant! A truly special moment in LU's history.
This was by far one of the best things I have experienced. I really enjoyed shooting this with you Sam. The sounds, sights and smells of the LUL 150 are unforgettable. Even now I can see the train pulling through all the stations we filmed at and all the people on the stations getting excited. I feel very priviliged to have been there. It's something I shall not forget any time soon!
Great editing..I love the shot near the end.when the train disappears in the tunnel with all the smoke. Its like being taken back in a time machine. Well done to all envolved.
That whistle sends a shiver down the spine in those tunnels, and I think it's a fitting reminder of the days when all trains on the Underground or "Met" as it was known back in the day, were steam hauled. Wish they'd do this every day, I'd pay the extra fare to go to work on a steam train if I lived in the UK, but then I'm a steam fan.
Superb piece of work, nicely edited, and using the surroundings and the weather really well to create atmosphere. That final shot is my favourite- straight out of another age!
Congratulations to all concerned. Our paths no doubt crossed several times on those two days. The compilation should be safely archived for at least the next 150 years. Many thanks.
These are said to be running again next July, if this does prove to be the case im gonna plan a visit from Southport for this event as it's gonna be the last time it happens if it does because of the new signalling being installed which wont be compatible with steam locos.
I have no idea why Roger Ayres came up with regard to my message about saving L44! As it was actually posted and therefore saved by Jim Stringer, when I was a 19 year old mechanical engineering apprentice. ( I shall have to speak to my son-in-law, who obviously has been using my I-pad). Jim Stringer.
Believe it or not, when the Sarah Siddons and her ilk were new, they were no faster than the steamers were on the run to and from London out to "Metroland", although they could accelerate quicker off the mark. Turnaround times were similar too... In any case, I wonder what they did for water and coal on these specials, for they don't have water cranes or bunkers on the Underground these days.
I wanted to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so they extend the new abandoned underground stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into six cars per units and also having three Accessible Toilets on that six cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXC, Gardner 6LXB and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and also having 8 DisaAccessiblelets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. Oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build a brand-new underground train station so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford and could they extend the DLR? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Six carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique minor no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 16 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.
+ricardlupus The live rail runs along the outside of the running rails. The centre rail is for the return current, so on the London Underground there are four rails.
ds1868 Actually, on the Underground, the center rail carries -210 volts (the outside rail carries +420 volts), so the center rail is not at ground potential and would for instance be dangerous if not lethal to touch.
How could it be diesel electric? it is running underground, where would the smoke of burnt disel go.? It is pure electric, see the sparks at point-work, it is taking electric from the third rail !

Very rare moment

You're welcome mate
1863 when the first new underground Metropolitan railway opened.
It’s a rewind back to the 1960s when steam used to run on the London Underground until 1971
Fantastic video thankyou for sharing.

@David Moyle is it just the underground or will it be the mainline aswell?
It was two sunday evenings in January, to mark the 150th year.
Thanks for posting. Very athmospheric video.
Finally, real engines pulling real trains.
Brilliant vid, really well done.
So Annie and Clarabel are actually underground stock?
Yea
no smoke alarm detectors?

Marvellous footage. Wish i'd known about this.
CRAP POOR / NO PUBLICITY IS ENDEMIC AND RIFE IN THE UK DUE TO INCOMPETENCE & LAZINESS.
Peter Buckley are you ok?
I have to say Sam, it's hard to see it all together like this. I just remember lots of running and filming! Haha
blimey they just whipped out the electric loco from the london transport museum & it was working after 80 years of non use?
Unbelievably yes it was and still in perfect working order
1863 when the met first opened: 3 trains per hour (approximately 1 train per 20 mins)
Now: approximately 20 trains per hour (1 train per 3 mins)
God I wish I could have been there
Although I'm stuck in NY
Maybe we could start an initiative for steam on the nyc subway
Sauna and commuting in one go. I wonder why this didn't catch on.
Was this a limited time thing or are they running the steam consist in regular service?
I would like to see this with my own eyes.
Its not a diesel, it's the former Metropolitan railway electric loco number 12 Sarah Siddons.
I just want to ask something. Shouldn’t the steam trains should look more metro like, scince this is the London Underground?
I wonder if in 150 years everyone will be crowding on a platform to see an electric train go by!
I remember when the 150 years January 2013 was on the news
Youve a great channel btw . 👍
Brilliant!
Of course, they waited until I'd emigrated before they did all this....!
If the steam locomotive would stop at an underground station, it can spread smoke at the fire extinguisers when they sound an alarrm.
Regin of Queen Victoria 1837-1901.
I just don't know how can that steam train can run on a two live electric rail system on the underground.
abdulbasit Rashid The running rails are not electrified. Got to watch out not to have a coupler dangling too close over the center live rail though.
No more dangerous than running steam under 25kVAC overhead wires...
9:50 can someone kindly tell me about those sparks from the rails?
What do you want to know?
thats the spark from the third rail contact
Wait a minute
Looks and sounds like that's a diesel locomotive they've got at the end of the train?
Diesel electric but it’s very old like 1931 or something like that
More like an electric engine
@@samanli-tw3id your both right it’s diesel electric it was built in 1934
How could it be diesel electric? it is running underground, where would the smoke of burnt disel go.? It is pure electric, see the sparks at point-work, it is taking electric from the third rail !
地下鉄で蒸気機関車走るのすごい。日本じゃあり得ない。
I don’t care what the greenies say I wish steam was still used in service sometimes
Aww.
Nicely done guys...... you got some great shots .... 16:00 deep underground would have to be my fav.....…☁☁☁⁘⁙☁☁⁙..☁……Hᴜɢʜ….Lɪᴋᴇᴅ…..ツ
