Just a quick point,if you just plug in your storage device it will not show up on your device and you will not see to format it like in superdells video.It would have been helpful to say straight of (1) plug in your new drive (2) then go to settings and go to restart (3) On starting it will then recognise the drive and you will be able to complete the formatting and storage.
Superdell- Thx for this, I am a new Shield Pro owner and was doing the USB stick wrong. I didnt choose the mirgate NOW, I kept clicking later and adding all the apps manually, I guess I wasnt making it internal. Still a huge learning curve with this Shield but a real thrill.

new SHIELD owners! - google the usb added storage problems going on. I just had mine wiped of data and reads that it no longer can be used by the Shield for being too slow of speed. I wasn't trying to root the system or do anything funky, other than trying to get network access so I could send the Shield files over my LAN
Love your vids. Thanks for all you do. What do you suggest as a compatible usb hub to use for the older Nvidia Shield pro? As man usb ports as can do so later can add keyboard etc. My goal is to add a couple 1T external hard drives that I already own to stream movies locally, along w/adding a usb stick, keyboard etc Possibly set up to run plex off the external connected hard drives if possible. My pc unit fried so trying to get around it using external drives that were previously connected to pc somehow.
I expanded my internal storage to a seagate 1 Terabyte and it worked for about two weeks and it is not working any more. Under storage and reset it just reads "Seagate USB Not Connected". Now nothing is recognized in EX file explore or Plex. All TH-cam apps also do not open. The hard drive light is still on and it is spinning, could it be broken?

Do you think that they are going to bring out a New Nvidia shield?? I saw this on the internet... A quick refresher here. Back at CES 2018, NVIDIA's director of Shield management, Chris Daniel, went on record saying that the product was still doing well, the U.S. retail market for it is going to be expanded, NVIDIA has plans to bring it to new countries in 2018, and that while NVIDIA certainly plans to bring Oreo to the Shield TV, there is no time frame and no rush. NVIDIA's not happy with the interface and is working with Google to change whatever needs changing. That's a pretty bold statement towards the company who built the actual software, but Daniels is right on and explains it all in one sentence.
if you have an Android TV box you can definitely do it on an Android TV box if it supports it I have an Android TV box in mind supports it I have a USB thumb drive that is a 128 and that's what I plugged into my TV box and I have all of my data going straight to the thumb drive and I have extra space on my TV box so I don't have to worry about running out of space

What if i want to migrate the data on the 32gb external memory back to the internal drive os memory and want to increase from 32 to 128 Gb of external storage how can you do that so you dont lose any data that was on the internal memory, do i have to migrate back the data to the inernal memory?? Hello SuperDell when I try to open Kodi I'm getting a waiting for external storage. When I setup my Shield a few years ago I set it up using a sandisk usb 3.0 128 GB. It's very warm to the touch so I'm assuming it needs to be replaced so I have a WD Elements portable storage 500gb. Do I have to reset the shield back to factory setting and start all over? Thanks
The issue I have is when I add external HDD and mount it. Still every time I install a new App from Playstore it only gives the option to install it to the internal. And then its full fill up too fast. The extrenal HDD when mounted at least lets me save vids and roms to it just not apps.

I tried using a couple of different USB flash drives and tried formatting them on my pc to both ntfs and exfat but so far haven't had much luck with integrating it into the nvidia storage because erase and format doesn't come up. Am I doing something wrong or is the nvidia just not allowing me to do it with this drive. I ordered a sata to usb 3.0 cable that I will try to use with my old laptop ssd and see if that works.

Arvind, there is no app installer on the shield. If you want to clear the cache, go to settings, apps, and click on whatever app you want to clear cache and click clear cache. Finally, in this video, I showed you how to check your storage. Please watch this short video and you'll see the demonstration.
It is a 1 TB WST dry the one you buy at Best Buy for like $48 it’s a 3.0 I have used in the past but for the past week I can open it I can’t access anything in it I don’t know what to do thank you God bless
So when your shield freezes due to buffering on a movie sometimes it happens when its scrapings the sources is it safe to unplug with the extra storage device connected or how should you go about it so nothing happens to the storage device?... thanks
Hi Donald, buffering has nothing to do with your external hard drive. You might want to check your internet, Are you on WiFi, What's your internet speed, do you have your own cable modem or router? These are some of the issues that may cause buffering

I wish I had seen this video before...after I got the upgrade it prompt to select USB to default and I did and after that it didn't recognize my WD tb 2had already installed and it wasn't showing my Es File Exployer correctly... After that I format and now I can't go back in ...now I only have what came with the shield....oh and I didn't backup which I should have...is there anything I can do to correct it...or buy a new external hard drive? Yes I had it set up for more space....and now it doesn't show the western digital 3.0 USB 2tb...that is when it messed up after the upgrade and I checked the default to use the USB ...it went from 12 to 5 on shield so I don't think it can find the external drive ...it said it detected it....I'm not very knowledgeable at this...but I'm learning... I haven't done anything else...I didn't use the backup after I formatted, so I lost all data and it won't show when I click storage anything ...can I back up using pc and use the external drive again on shield or die I need to start with a new WD external just like the one I have? Please help i connected 8tb of external hd in shield pro but it shows 80gb so i thought its limit is 5tb which i have previously connected and is working great but now my 8tb is locked at 80gb when connecting to Pc even after formating..😢

never heard the word thumb drive before, in the UK we call it a memory stick, your box must be old, my latest Nvidia shield I have to go to device preferences and then the storage menu is present
In the states we call it thumb drive, flash drive, and or memory stick. Also, the video is more than 2 years old so many updates have been performed since I made this video.
Hello. I plugged in a 128 gig Samsung drive and when I go to storage and reset and click the usb under removable storage. It does not give me the option to format it. Only give me Option to eject. What shud I do??
I bought a Nvidia shield less then a week ago and received a message already that it was running low on storage, So i installed a new Sandisk 3.1 USB thumb drive for external storage, Then i noticed right away a difference in performance so i did a internet speed test and the speed decrease tremendously. The Nvidia shield is running sluggish not sure why.
I keep getting messages about the shield storage even though I've successfully completed your process. It shows that the WD SSD is installed and being used . Is there a way to disable these notices?

Does adding the USB drive change the Shields preformance?..... Does it slow it down opening apps..... is my main concern, right now its sleek and blazing fast. I have the same USB drive128gb, havent installed it because I'm concerned it will slow down my Shield.

Hi David, Yes, you can add hubs to the shield. I use one now to add the keyboard and mouse to it. The shield is a beast

that's strange. Try rebooting your shield

Arvind, there is no app installer on the shield. If you want to clear the cache, go to settings, apps, and click on whatever app you want to clear cache and click clear cache. Finally, in this video, I showed you how to check your storage. Please watch this short video and you'll see the demonstration.

Yes, once installed and connected, it will use the expanded storage as internal storage. Almost every app you install will go to the usb drive

Hello. I plugged in a 128 gig Samsung drive and when I go to storage and reset and click the usb under removable storage. It does not give me the option to format it. Only give me Option to eject. What shud I do??
I bought a Nvidia shield less then a week ago and received a message already that it was running low on storage, So i installed a new Sandisk 3.1 USB thumb drive for external storage, Then i noticed right away a difference in performance so i did a internet speed test and the speed decrease tremendously. The Nvidia shield is running sluggish not sure why.
ANDRE MONROE you need to check the read and write speed on the storage device, probably tooooo slow. I would recommend at least 150. Lowest 100.

I keep getting messages about the shield storage even though I've successfully completed your process. It shows that the WD SSD is installed and being used . Is there a way to disable these notices?

So if I get 16 GB model and I get 1tb will my apps install to external 1tb drive same thing with files I download when I plug it in
Now will it download to reg storage or will it download to usb or sd card
Does adding the USB drive change the Shields preformance?..... Does it slow it down opening apps..... is my main concern, right now its sleek and blazing fast. I have the same USB drive128gb, havent installed it because I'm concerned it will slow down my Shield.

Adding and installing apks and applications to the external drive will they run as fast as the Nvidia Shield internal drive.
Hi Orbit, they run fast enough. I never time the apps from the internal or external but it's fast enough though.
