  • In this third installment of my fall series to Zion, I spend time with a cluster of maple trees in the morning, then find an afternoon subject to work with.

    For me, the maples from the morning is an incredible image. A composition that takes time to find. It puts me into the canyon. i appreciate the fact you take the time to lead us to your images.

      Thanks Dave! One of my favorite parts of photography is standing in front of a scene that grabs my attention for one reason or another, and trying to find a compositional solution. I'm glad it comes through in the videos.

    Those sheep were trying to steal your composition! Maybe in a few years that box elder will have grown enough to fill and bridge both sides of the canyon. The lower branches were starting to mimic the shape of the walls. Wonderful to go back and see the place change over time.

    Hi Ben, I enjoy your videos a lot. Your videos have such a calming effect... and your images are sublime.
    I was at Zion about two weeks ago. The place is magical and has so much to offer. You can spend a lifetime at Zion and still find things you never saw before. I ran into a painter from Portland, Maine. He had parked his RV at a nearby campsite and drove his truck to Zion to do his paintings. We chatted for a while and he gave me some tips as to what to look for. Zion is full of surprises.

      I'm so glad you were able to experience Zion, especially during a relatively quiet time of year away from the spring and summer crowds. I certainly look forward to visiting again in the next month or so. Winter is a great time to be there. Thanks for watching!

    I very much liked the light, the composition and the subject of the lens flared shot but indeed hope you get to shoot it again in the future and make it a portfolio material.
    Thanks as always for the videos.

      Thanks Vishwas! It will be interesting to revisit that scene in the fall and see how similar it is. Things have a tendency to change quite a bit down in those washes from the summer flash floods, but if it's looking good again, I certainly wouldn't mind giving it a second try. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

    Great video, your photography speaks for itself and can tell by the final images that all the planning and detail you put in really pays off. I went to your store to see if you had a link to the composition framing device you use but couldn’t find it and was wondering if you have a link, thanks.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you David! That is very kind of you! The framing device I use can be found on amazon for less than $10. It's an incredibly useful tool, and I keep it in my pocket at all times on my photo trips. The red maple frame is really beautiful. And for the other one, the ash tree, I don't think the flare is too distracting, it mostly falls over the upper part of the trunk.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Alex! If for some reason that tree is swept downstream by a flash flood and the photo is no longer possible, I suppose I would embrace the version with the lens flare, but it felt more like a distraction than anything beneficial. I'll have to try and photograph it again, but who knows. :-)

    Beautiful video and images. T-shirt design idea: "A graphic of you taking a picture with light reflecting off a big horn!" Big horns have two reflective colors, a warm one from the flanks and a cooler one...well...from the aft plane perpendicular to the flanks. Maybe the graphic of you on the front and the sheep on the back? ;-)

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha! It would certainly make for an interesting shirt! Thanks for watching Brian!

    Fantastic shots, Ben! I truly love both of them, and it's a shame about that lens flare. The balance in the second shot of the maple is just perfect! 😃

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Andreas! Hopefully I'll be able to give that flared shot another try next fall but we'll see. Those washes change quite a bit, so there could very well be a chunk of a massive ponderosa trunk wedged there from the summer flash floods.

    Ben, I notice the fold-able gray card you use in the videos. Which one do you use. I have purchased a few and not been happy with them. On one, the gray was not 15% gray. Another fell apart quickly. Another enjoyable video. Thank you.

    Great to see those bighorn sheep coming so close to you, apparently they are not afraid of humans over there. I really love the texture of tree with the yellow leaves, think a closeup shot would look amazing with some of those leaves. Shame you had a lens flare in this image, Hope it wil work out next time, when you photograph this subject!!!

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Sander! Of the sheep I saw that day, all expect one kept a safe distance but weren't overly concerned about my presence. The one that chose the long way around happened to be the one with the radio collar. It was clearly quite skeptical of humans after being collared.

    What is the tool you use to hold up to your eye to help frame a scene? I feel like that would help me greatly in the field.

  • @brianbeattyphotography
    @brianbeattyphotography 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Nice work Ben. Bummer about the flare, but I wonder if it’s somehow still useable until you get a chance to reshoot it? Or is it definitely too washed?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Brian! It's not too bad, but distracts from the rest of the image. I'll have to try again on a future trip, but who knows, maybe there will be a massive chunk of ponderosa trunk smashed against it after a summer flash flood.

    Hi Ben, what backpack are you using. I am looking one similar to that.
    Tks

      This is the Z-Packs Arc Haul Zip. It's a discontinued model now, but here's the current version: zpacks.com/products/arc-zip-ultra-62l-backpack
      It's an ultralight pack designed for backpacking, but it can carry my 8x10 kit just fine. Honestly it's way better than photo-centric bags that are often heavy and bulky.

    Two fine compostions, well done! Provia did a good job and did you use a warming up filter? Do you still use Velvia50? Thanks

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! There was enough natural reflected light that a warming filter wasn't necessary for that scene. The last time I used Velvia 50 was back in 2021. I shot it alongside Provia for many years, and eventually found that I'm just more satisfied with Provia than I am with Velvia. When Velvia was discontinued in large format not long after that, I wasn't all that bummed because I had already transitioned away from it.

    The quality of your videos is always outstanding. However, your images are even better! The second composition that you photographed was very interesting; shame the flaring. Quick question regarding your comment in the video: could you please share the name of the photographer who took the photo of the same tree? I searched for Andrew Drew but couldn't find it.

      Thanks Jaime! I'm hoping that tree will look similar next year so I can give it another try, but we'll see. Things change around quite a bit down in those washes, so you can't ever take anything for granted. The photographer I mentioned is Andrew Baruffi.
