The intentional wind movement should be the first image in your next book ... "In The Wind". 😄

Good morning Ben, beautiful soothing video. Here in Europe we are experiencing a storm, very different there and it is cold here.
Great to see the colors that mother nature gives in and there in peace.
Thank you for this beautiful video, I'm catching up.
Have a nice day and greetings Martin.

I really enjoyed this four part series. I especially like how you talk about the reflected light in the canyons and how that can be your light source. Well done!

The tree was very obliging :-) and the image with the movement is especially beautiful. It definitely simplified the image and feels like there is a dance of red veils around the trunk.

Yes wind No wind section was great, I bet they are a pain to set up but live commentary while you capture the images is very enjoyable to watch

Well done as usual Ben. We’ve crossed paths in Zion a few times over the years. Funny, I’ve shot the same 4 comps you’ve shown on your fall trip this go around. Always fascinating to see other versions and interpretations. Keep up the great work…PS - plenty of ice in the washes now!!

Thanks as always Mitch! There's something so very calming about the natural sounds in Zion, and working with them while making the videos is one of my favorite parts. It allows me to relive the experience.

I definitely agree with you this time. #3-2 is your keeper. Great inspiration on using motion blur.

That second photo would look awesome with some backlight or reflected glow with full peak color. great work!

Yesterday I visited a local canyon and came back with almost 200 images 😂. I think that at most 6 stand out from the others 😅

Embrace the wind! Good stuff. Pretty sure I photographed your first image, in the opposite direction, with my 6x17 back. Small world stuff

have you thought about shooting some medium formst as well? The shot with the intentional wind made me think of aerochrome. Could maybe be a nice experiment to consider =)

There is a tree on the edge of a stream in a local county park, an old oak with wonderful gnarled branches spreading along the bank of the stream to either side of the trunk. It's at the bottom of a shallow dip in the ground, on the northern edge of the park and lighting is very difficult. There were so many times I set up and waited for the light and was disappointed as it never got quite right. Several years ago I made two 8x10 B&W exposures, intending a diptych taking in the full extent of those wonderful branches. The light was just okay, not great but I was frustrated at all the times I hadn't taken the picture because the light wasn't perfect.
So I went back a year ago with my 5x7 camera, thinking that I could make another, hopefully better, diptych with the different format. The park management had cut the branches off; they were laying on the ground next to the stream. Too old, too long, too dangerous to children playing around the tree, I guess.
Take the picture. Even if the light isn't perfect, even if there's a breeze, even if you think that film is too expensive and you aren't *sure*. Just take the damn picture while you can.

I get the whole film and large format thing, but it just makes more sense to use a gfx system.

It might seem that way from the outside, but the experience of working with a large format camera is far different than working with digital. Nearly all photographers who work with large format today are also completely fluent with digital, yet choose to work with large format because they are drawn to it for one reason or another. It’s tough to describe to those who aren’t fluent with both, but there’s something very special about the process.

How do you appear so nonchalant during the lighting? I was at a beach scene for sunrise and I felt like every minute that passed, I missed my shot.

It’s called ViewCatcher by The Color Wheel Company. Lightweight tool for framing up shots. Very handy!
