Titanic VS Modern Cruise Ships

  • The Titanic's only voyage ended in tragedy on April fifteenth, 1912. At the time of the disaster, it was the largest and most advanced ship ever constructed. Designed to carry more than 2,400 passengers and almost 900 crewmembers, the Titanic had certainly earned its name.
But with over a century of advancement, how are today’s cruise ships different from those of Titanic’s day? Sure, we all know they’re now required to carry more lifeboats, but that isn’t exactly what makes them the life of the party.

    SUMMARY:
    - The Titanic stretched 882 ft from bow to stern and had a beam, or width, of 92 ft. The ship’s nine decks rose to an impressive 175 ft.
    - The SS Imperator would steal its crown a year later when it undertook his maiden voyage in 1913.
    - As of 2019, the largest cruise ship in the world is the Symphony of the Seas, which is operated by Royal Caribbean.
    - 1184 ft across and 215 ft wide, her eighteen decks are double the Titanic’s height and provide spacious accommodations for well over five thousand passengers.
    - Think of it as the difference between a city bus and a tour bus. You board a cruise ship to have fun and an ocean liner when you need to get somewhere.
    - First-class passengers would enjoy a saltwater pool, spa, gymnasium, and multiple restaurants decorated in the styles of French cafés and swanky New York hotels.
    - Second-class rooms were smaller and not as glamorous, but luxuriously furnished.
    - Third Class, also known as steerage, wasn't quite so luxurious, although the accommodations were still nicer than on many ships of the same era.
    - Modern cruise ships don’t really have classes in the way as the Titanic or even modern airlines.
    - Even the least expensive room on a cruise ship is still going to be about the level of a modest hotel room.
    - In addition to TVs and in-room slides, there are many other amenities found on modern cruise ships that wouldn’t have been available in the early twentieth century.
    - Shipbuilding had to come a long way before these immense mobile vacation spots became a reality.
    - The Titanic was constructed in Belfast harbor on a special slipway built specifically to accommodate its unprecedented bulk.
    - The hull of the Titanic was made up of thousands of these overlapping plates with the lower hull consisting of two layers.
    - Titanic's primary safety feature was the sixteen watertight compartments making up the lower decks.
    - Ships of today are still made from steel, but advancements in smelting and metallurgy have resulted in hulls stronger and less brittle than were possible a hundred years ago.
    - Speaking of the engines, modern cruise ships run primarily on either diesel, natural gas, or some combination of the two.
    - The most unusual aspect of modern cruise construction is that they're not built hull to funnel as a single construction.
    - The largest cruise ships and oil tankers are assembled in just six locations worldwide, the most prolific being the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

At the point were the ship was starting to elevate in the air and some lifeboats got destroyed falling from the titanic... or it was just to add drama (even tho I don't think we need to add any) to the movie and it didn't happen like this in the real life?

And as soon as that movie is "too old" for the generation growing up now she will become forgotten. She already was by the 1950's but interest was spiked due to the famous novel "A Night to Remember" and the following Hollywood movie named the same.

True Olympic was the first of the 3 sister ships. But Titanic had much improved features that would have made her a bit more preferable had she survived. They enclose half of the A deck promenade because passengers didn't like the Olympics fully exposed promenade. So they added a shelter deck to the A Deck promenade on Titanic. Titanic also got rid of the overly large and under used B deck promenade and instead extended the walls outward and made more luxurious 1st class staterooms. And included 2 ultra luxurious parlour suites on both sides of the ship with their own private promenade. Titanic also had the Cafe Parisien a long restaurant cafe that was designed to represent a French sidewalk cafe. Olympic didn't have this restaurant at first. It was added later on a couple years later and in a different location.

This just goes to show how truly advanced the White Star Line ships were... I’ve been on a couple cruises and like he said it’s for having fun. I feel like the titanic being an ocean liner and meant for transportation makes it WAY more luxurious as far as rooms, design, and layout on the inside. I mean comon, a grand staircase?! That one room looked better then the whole ship I was on... and one of them was through royal Caribbean. So some of the best ships today. If I had the chance to go in an ocean liner with those accommodations and class like the titanic had I would take that over a modern cruise any day.

If I had to choose to cross the Atlantic with an old fashioned steamer or a modern cruise ship I would always take the steamer. They were constructed to face the hardest storms, and I would feel quiet a lot safer on them. By the way : a damage under the waterline would still bring one of the modern swimming luxury-vessels in serious trouble. Remember the Costa Concordia. . .

Titanic and Olympic were the same length. But Titanic was slightly heavier than the Olympic due to added features that the Olympic didn't have, like the cafe Parisien, having half the A deck promenade enclosed. And some added amenities. Of course Titanic also had a 3rd sister ship the Britannic which was a bit bigger and definitely heavier due to having improved safety features to her overall design after what happened to Titanic.

    • @kyleenglot9184
      @kyleenglot9184 2 ปีที่แล้ว

True. But I think it more so has to do with the purpose of an ocean liner vs a cruise ship. Titanic only had 3 decks including the upper boat deck known as the superstructure. (The sections of the ship painted in white). These ships traversed really rough seas at times, and if they had tall superstructures like the modern cruise ships of today they would be very top heavy and would have a risk of rolling over. The only exception is Cunard's QM2... It had a much taller superstructure compared to the rest of the hull. But I guess there's more technology put into it to keep it stable while in rough sea conditions.

I would like to point out that "cruise ships" were not a thing until the late 1970's. Ocean liners were used before then and they were built very differently than modern ships.
