- Is the KL-YES Program safe? In this video, I explain how this exchange program works including the placement organizations, host families, schools involved. I share my personal experience on the safety of studying abroad during exchange (with AFS) and some advice on how you can stay safe during your time in the US. A lot of this information is also applicable to students on regular AFS/ AYUSA/ YFU/ Greenheart, American Councils/ World Link etc and students on other scholarships such as FLEX, CBYX etc.

The Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program or KL-YES Program is a fully funded scholarship by the U.S. State Department that allows high school students from different countries to study at an American high school and live with an American host family for 10 months. It is a great experience that allows you to learn about different perspectives, interact with different cultures and represent your own.

Hey Eisha! Thanks for this video. It was very informative. I wanted to ask you if the organisation's can stop you from going to the States if you are not stable health wise. I mean I am a celiac, so is there a chance they can ban me from going or something?
Hi! not an expert (just a host mom who read thru a bunch of postings of kids looking to be placed here in the States.) There is a medical report that has to be done at the later selection process. Stable is the key word for medical conditions. While in the US, you will only have traveler's insurance, which means you can get treatment for an injury or a sudden illness (like strep throat) but no coverage for pre-existing conditions. If your condition is stable as long as you avoid gluten, then it will be noted that you need your host family to provide a special diet. If you require frequent doctor visits and medicine, then traveling away from your doctor for almost a year might not be what is best for you.

I watched some videos you don't have to have an idea of what they ask just be you and stay open minded and respecting and don't stop talking talk about everything you like and what would you do in certain situations and share your opinions and why did you choose to apply to this scholarship for example to learn about new cultures and people and religions and to teach other students about yours AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BE HONEST!!!

Last year, my Flex kid was given a choice of 2 return flight dates. One in May, before the school year ended here. One in June just after school ended. My guess would be "No, they won't send you back early," but I would send an email to the YES group in your country (If every student in your country needs to be back for testing, they might accommodate for that need.)

You must return home after 10 months. However, you can come back to the U.S. on a different visa.

Hey, I have a few questions regarding the YES PROGRRAM. I firstly wanted to know if I can apply for the YES PROGRAME after completing my 10th grade in Pakistan so then I can come aboard to complete my 11th and 12th grade and then after completing my high school would I be eligible for university? or collage?
KL YES PROGRAM - Apply in fall of 10th grade year. Complete the application process, interviews, exams, etc during your 10th grade year. IF accepted, then study abroad in US for ten months, then return home to attend 11th grade.

No, my school told us that we study a school year there and come back home and continue the next year you won't lose anything!

I Think What you do is where you leave your studies in your home country (for example: if you are in 9th and going to study 10th in the USA, You have to still continue your 10th in your home country)

It depends on the birth date. So my year was that you need to be born between Jan 1st 2003 - Aug 1st 2006. And applications start between August - September. So you’ll need to check!
I just have one question: does the program give you some pocket money or do you have to like save up to yknow, buy stuff-- because 3 days of mcdonalds there can probably wash my wallet clean 😅 not to mention the tax ordering fast food-
Yes they do give pocket money. Around 200$ each month! Also your parents can send you money.

Nope, it’s against the rules.

There are a list of 20 Rules that all Host Families must Enforce -- Including no drinking, no smoking, no drugs, no driving, no making any permanent changes to their bodies or lives (no changing religions, dying their hair, or getting tattoos.). We are supposed to return them to parents in the same condition we received them. As far as addiction goes...alcohol and tobacco are illegal for teenagers to buy. Most any other known addiction causing drugs are controlled and either require a prescription from a doctor or are illegal. (Codeine is not available without a prescription.)
Harassment can happen. However, Exchange Students are under the protection of a family and the school they attend. Ignorance and prejudice exist...which is why I host students so the kids at the school can learn that people from my student's country are just people. Likewise, my YES student struggled with their own prejudices at the beginning of the year before learning that people are people.
