I finally finished my xj after a very protracted rebuild, (btw have you seen the amount of secondhand primary chains for sale!) Unfortunately the gearbox locked up as I shifted into second gear. At least all the bolts will be easy to loosen when I take the motor out again. As an aside, the American forum suggests installing the starter clutch rebuild kit, as it is another common fault
Hi mate, that’s bad luck about your engine. Hope you get it sorted quickly. I’m surprised someone would buy a used primary chain as it’s likely worn. Haven’t seen the starter clutch kit, mine looked fine but worth doing if it’s worn.
where did you find a new set guides and chain, there hasn't been any factory stuff available for years and the aftermarket chains available like the DID chains aren't supposed to be compatible with the factory gears?
just out of curiosity since you you have the engine completely disassembled did you consider the possibility of trying to see if there are any gear sets that will interchange into the xj650 case to give it better final drive ratio, you are doing all these mods for more power and torque but you are still going to have the same final drive problem, because of the gearing these bikes suck a big one at highway speeds, i stay off the freeway on mine because i can't handle hearing the motor having to run at 6000+ rpms to keep up with the flow of traffic especially when the motor has a redline of 9500 rpm, that's over 60 % of redline and with shaft there's no changing ratios with sprockets.....
Hi mate, since I haven't ridden the bike yet I'm not sure how I'll find the gearing. Having said that, I've compared gearing from the XJ650 and XJ750 and they interchange. The Maxim has a slightly different ratio due to a smaller rear rim so its possible. I will look into this if I'm not happy with the RPM's etc. At this point it made no sense messing with ratios without having any knowledge of how it goes at speed.
Mezzmo Engineering My XJ 650 i was hoping to hear run for the 1st time today I got it to run but only cylinders #1 & 2 seem to work The 3 & 4 pipes were cold what would be the causes of this? Please & thank you
Hi Johnny, if its running on 1 &2 then the coils must be good. One coil fire 1 & 4 and the other does 2 & 3. Could be low compression, faulty spark plugs or plug wires or blocked carby jets
@@Mezzmoengineering Update. Ended up being the carbs Soaked them over night and all is good now. If i go to individual K&N air filters, i'll have to re-jet the carbs? If so any idea what ones i should use over factory? or i will have to keep playing with it until i get it burning right?
@@johnnyrotten3887 Hi Mate, my guess is you will need bigger carbes with pods. I'd try going on size bigger. Another option is you could contact 6Sigma who do custom jets to suit your engine. Check my earlier carby video about this. That way you know the sizes will be right as other things like altitude, exhaust type etc effect tuning

Hi Jordan, I'm not sure. In the first instance try your local Yamaha dealer. Then Ebay is another option. Not sure if other pistons will fit your model
Hi Mate, not sure its going to be that easy.. XJ650 has 63mm pistons and 52.4mm stroke, XJ750 is 65mm X 56.4mm stroke and I think XJ700 is 65mm pistos with 52.4mm stroke like the 650. Not sure if the piston pin to the top of the piston will be the right height. Also not certain, but you might be able to fit a XJ750 crank and rods and big bore kit like I'm doing to get to 820cc.

Awesome work mate!
You are the best ! Fantastic Tig Job !
Thanks for the feedback
Your fins came out excellent.... Your pursuit for perfection always makes your videos that much better 👌🏾
Gday, great repair on the cooling fins, far bit of work but well worth the effort, please stay safe
Thanks Matty. the fins turned out better than I expected. Goes to show, its always worth trying something new
Nice work on those fins.
Thanks 👍
Great job , They came out SWEET !
Thanks 👍
does a 900 crank fit into 650 cases out of interest?....watched this build all the way..epic!
Thanks Tony. I didn't measure the 900 crank so not sure. My guess is it won't fit
More than one way to " fin " a cat ! Great job as usual ! This bike is gonna be nice hey mate !?

I have an xj750
Where can I buy the rings?
Can parts of other motorcycles be adapted?
Hi Mate, you should be able to by rings from your local Yamaha dealer. Otherwise, try searching on ebay.
